âItâs the three ring circus. There are clowns, tigers, one legged elephants, and for a bonus feature: weâve got a white zebra. You in for the count? You want tickets with that heaping bowl of popcorn? Dealâs going once, twice, too late.â
Only one voice said things like thatâI sighed and sat up in the darkness. âIâm sleeping⦠again.â
âAgainâyou mean âfinallyâ!â It chided me, âYouâve been awake for a very long time. Itâs about time you fell off to nanaland. I can only amuse myself so much here. Youâre not that entertaining of a person.â
âThanks⦠for that.â
âKeeping it real, Bearded Lady.â
Oh, lovely. A circus theme.
âFairytales are overdone. The court jester wants his turn.â
âLast time you told me Iâm the Immortal. Iâve adjusted. Iâll do whatever I need. What else can you hit me with? Iâd like to wake up or go back to normal dreams. Youâre a little hard to handle sometimes.â If I tried to reason with it, would it work?
The voice laughed. Shrill. âWould you like a comb for your beard?â
No reasoning would be had. âSo what are you here to enlighten me with?â
âYou lie really well.â The voice had been maniacal before, but it was calm, eerily calm now.
I felt shivers go down my back. âWhat are you talking about?â
âAsk your lover.â
Roaneâs words lashed back at me before I could stop them. ~Lying. All you do is lie.~
I flinched and murmured, âNo. Youâre wrong.â
âI havenât said anything,â the voice gloated.
âI know what youâre going to say. Youâre going to say what he said. I donât lie. Iâm not a liar.â
âTigers spawn earthlings on their back. Sometimes they ride on the backs of elephants, but only the ones with roller skates.â
âMake sense, for once!â I shrieked into the darkness. It was an abyss.
âSilly Bearded Lady. They donât ride on the one legged elephant. Thatâd be dangerous.â
âIâm not lying to anyone.â
âAnd stupid. Whoâd want to ride on the back of a one legged elephant? Youâd fall right off.â The voice ignored me and continued, amused, âAnd then rolling hula hoops that are on fire would burn you. Why are they always on fire? Iâve never figured that out.â
âEnough!â Iâd forced it before and I was willing to bet that I could do it again.
A black wind shrieked in protest and swept around me. I blinked, startled, and tried to stand still as a tornado picked up from underneath my feet. It rushed upwards, enveloped me, and as it started to settleâI found myself staring back at⦠what a shockerâmyself. Except that it wasnât me. My brown curls looked sleek and framed my shoulders. My eyes werenât innocent. They were knowing, wise, and a little crazy. And still, I looked sultry. I was dressed how I had dressed for Adamâs date, in my lace shirt and snug jeans, but there was a different aura that surrounded the Immortal me. Confidence.
She grinned and winked. âBet this isnât what you wanted, huh?â
âHowâd you know?â I returned, sardonically. âItâs not as if youâre a part of me or something.â
âYouâre sarcastic.â
âJust because youâre inside of me doesnât mean that you understand me.â
The Immortal me smiled sweetly. âI know a lot more about you than you know about yourself. I know all about Craig. I know about Kates. I know how youâre heaping a whole pile of denial poop on a burning house because you did the deed with a vampire. And not any vampire, Bearded Lady. You did it with ~thee~ vampire. There are ramifications that you canât handle right now.â
It wouldnât stop. âPlease, please. All this nonsenseâI canât handle it. I might go insane.â
âEvery circus must pitch a tent and entertain.â
âLet me guess, Iâm your audience?â
âYouâre the tent, Beardy, but youâll do. The tigers might not think so. They might want to shave off your beard or burn the tent. I havenât decided which.â
âIâd really like to wake up. I need to tell Roane something and I canât when Iâm asleep.â
âThatâs right, Horny Bearded Lady. You didnât stop to think. The tigers think itâs funny how the Bearded Lady forgets her beard when sheâs around The Worldâs Strongest Man.â
âOh, please. Roane is not the worldâs strongest man.â I felt foolish saying that. Who said things like that?
âYou might be surprised.â The Immortal laughed it off and vanished.
Greatâback to the dark abyss. There were no winds this time. It was just darkness, no mocking voice, and no uneasy feeling inside of my stomach.
I looked down and choked out a gasp. I lifted my arm and like before, I saw the same silver color underneath my skin. I watched in fascination as the silver color seemed to melt into a thick rich paste that sparkled like diamonds. I liked diamonds, just not inside of me.
âYouâre every girlâs best friend. Youâre the prize, Davy. Youâre the one that everyone wants.â
âTell me something that I donât know,â I challenged.
âCraig wanted to make you a vampire. He told you how heâd do it, how much heâd enjoy it, and that youâd thank him in the end. And nowâvampires, vampires all around the shiny prize. Whatâs a scared little girl to do? The hungry monsters keep circling, but they wonât be kept at bay for long. A sharkâs going to bite soonâor maybe one did.â
âRoane didnât bite me. I bit him.â
âYou liked it. Youâd do it again. I can feel the thirst inside of you. Whatâs that mean? Are you going to become a vampire?â The Immortal laughed hysterically and spun around me in tight circles.
I looked down at my arms and watched, detached, as the sparkling paste thinned and became like blood. âRoane said you chose me, did you? Did you actually choose me or did you get stuck with me?â
âThe divorce will have collateral damage that no fortune teller can foresee.â
That was a cheerful thought. âWhat do you want from me?â
I felt the Immortal slow to a stop, instantly, and sensed its calm. âStop lying to yourself. Youâre only hurting yourself.â
âFine,â I gritted out. âYou invaded me! You had no right.â
âHeâs thee vampire. You should sit up and pay attention.â
âHow can I? Your riddles are a bit mind twisting,â I snorted out.
Then it answered another one. âAs long as youâre the Immortal, you are unable to become a vampire.â
I clasped my eyes closed in relief. Maybe there were some benefits to being the Immortal.
âYou drank his blood. There are ramifications for thatâones that wonât be foreseen until much later, but theyâll still be there when youâve forgotten your worry.â Relief, release, and now doom.
âIâm tired. I want to wake up.â
âEvery circus has a snake charmer. Whoâs yours? What snake slithered in your tent?â
I gasped awake and bolted upright in bed. I didnât need to find my bearings. Everything rushed back at me at breakneck speed. I was in Roaneâs bed. His sheets were a welcoming cool touch against my naked skin and I turned to see him at his window, gazing outwards. His black pants rode low on his hips. There was no shirt in his hand this time, only worry in his eyes.
I swallowed tightly because I felt what he felt inside.
Resignation and fatigue. Underneath that was determination. He was going to win. Heâd always known it and now it was time to remind everyone else.
âWhatâd you dream about?â
I curled against the headboard and wrapped the sheets around me. I felt exposed. âA lot of ramblings and crazy talk. There was a circus theme this time.â
âCircus?â Roane frowned, but never moved away from the window.
The fairytale wasnât worth mentioning. âThe Immortal told me that there was a snake charmer in my tent.â
âYou talk? You have conversations?â Roane looked taken aback.
âYeah, anywayâthe snake charmer sent a snake inside the tent.â
He crossed to sit beside me on the bed. He sat with his back towards me and I watched the corded muscles on his back. He was primed and ready to go.
âI think⦠Iâm the tent. The Immortal told me that, but someone was inside of me.â
Roane swung his hypnotic eyes toward me.
I grinned and rasped out, âNo, not you. She meant like an empath was inside of me. Sometimes⦠itâs been known to happen. If an empath is skilled enough, they can find someone and look outwardâlook at where theyâre at. I did it. I had Blue do it to Kates for me.â
âYou think that someone was inside of you to see where you are?â
âI know it.â The moment my eyes had opened, everything flooded to me. âKates told me that Blue was in a coma. If Iâd gone further inside of her I wouldâve seen that Kates hadnât put Blue in a coma. She took her captive. Blue was being held in the same castle where they took me with Emily and Adam. I didnât search inside of her enough.â
Roane stood and crossed to his closet. I watched as he flung open the doors and quickly rifled inside. âTell me more.â The command was thrown over his shoulder.
âBlue was inside my head. They made her go in when I had my shield down.â
Roane paused and looked at me.
I swallowed painfully. âShe got inside and theyâre coming here.â
âThatâs what he intended the whole time.â Roane suddenly stopped and straightened to his fullest height. Each muscle on his back stood out, primed and livid.
In that moment, I was suddenly aware of how Roane was a vampire. He was a predator and now heâd go against another predator. Roane was a Hunter. Their skills went unmatched by other vampires. It was why they were chosen to be the hunters of their own kind, but⦠Lucan was his human brother. And he led, what Kates believed to be, a revolution.
âThey had no intention of you delivering a message to the Immortal. Let me guess, they have her boyfriend and they hoped sheâd give herself up for him?â
I nodded. âHowâd you know?â
âI can read thoughts. The girl they think is the Immortal has no idea what a shield isâand your shield was down too, Davy. I read that theyâd taken Adam and Emily. I know that Kates used you.â
âDid you read inside of my head what your brother really intends to do with the Immortal?â
Roane paused.
âHe wants my blood because he wants his Family to have the Immortalâs powers. Heâs hoping to have an army of unstoppable vampires so that they can reverse the decree. The one that states they canât hunt, bite, or kill humans. The one that started the Hunters in the first place and the one thatâll allow Kates to do all the slaying she wants.â
I looked at my hands, lifted them upwards, and gasped as I saw a glimpse of the sparkling diamond blood that Iâd dreamt about. My eyes closed and then my normal skin was back. But I sworeâ¦.
âNo,â Roane clipped out. âMy brother doesnât just want to reverse the decree. My brother wants to rule the entire Vampire nation.â He lifted his eyes once again to me. Then he reached inside his closet and pulled out a lethal sword. He strapped the sword diagonally across his back and lifted a gold necklace over his head. It hung on the apex of his chest. I wondered at the significance when I saw that a small leaf emblem that dangled from the chain.
âWellâ¦,â I searched for something to say. âAt least heâs ambitious.â
Roane clipped out, âHis âambitionâ just sealed his fate.â Then his jaw clenched, unclenched, and clenched again. âHe wants you. He canât have you.â
