Chapter One: Welcome To North River

The Hybrid Series: The Hybrid Of North River

As I'm standing in front of the bathroom braiding my long blonde hair into a French braid, my stomach is in knots. My family and I just moved to North River two weeks ago. We left the city so my parents could start their own medical practice. Today I start school at North High and I'm nervous to say the least. I only had one friend in the city, Her name is Lauren. Hopefully I'll see her again.

"Megan!" I hear my mother Kate call.

"Coming," I call back as I'm tying off the end of my braid. I throw on a light jacket and head out to the kitchen. My mom lays down a bowl of cereal in front of me as I sit down.

"We have to leave early today because we have a meeting with Principal Graham because you're new,"

"Okay,"

I quickly eat and then run to get my Silver backpack.

"Jason, lets go we don't need our daughter being late on the first day!" My mother yells upstairs to my dad.

"I'm coming honey," He calls back and I can't help but laugh at their antics.

Dad comes downstairs and then we head to the car.

The whole ride my heart was racing. I could feel the blood pumping through my body at a mile a minute. I was trying to keep myself distracted by thinking about the towns history. Mom and Dad didn't do much research because they were more worried about the clinic. The  archives said that many years ago this town used to be home to vampires and werewolves. Maybe that's why my EMT school teacher told me to do supernatural medicine classes when I told her I was moving to North River. Did I believe in vampires and werewolves? A little but I know it's just myths.

"Honey, it's going to be okay," My mom says as we're getting out of the car

"I'm just nervous,"

"I know sweetheart,"

My parents and I walk into the principal's office and sit down. The secretary said that Principal would be in a few minutes.

"I wonder what he wants to talk about?" I ask my parents.

"He probably just wants to meet us before your first day," My dad says

"You're correct Mr Ross," A man says as he comes in the room. How did he hear that door isn't thin?

"I'm Steven Graham, but the kids call me Mr. Steve," He introduces himself shaking our hands.

"I'm Megan," I say

"What exactly did you want to talk about?" My mom asks

"What do you know about the towns history?" He asks

"Not much," both of my parents say but I know some. Hopefully I'm not crazy.

"The town used to be home to vampires and werewolves back in the day," I say and he nods

"That's correct,"

"What does the history of the town have to do with the school?" My dad asks

"Vampires and Werewolves go to this school along with humans Mr and Mrs Ross," He says calmly and my parents instantly pale. I guess I was wrong about it being a myth.

"What!" My dad yells, well this isn't going to end well.

"Dad calm down," I say gently

"Calm down, they could hurt you!" He yells

"Yeah they could, but they wouldn't be going to school with humans if they couldn't control themselves," I say letting go of my timid personality I have around strangers. "I'm correct in saying that, right?" I ask Mr. Steve

"You are," He confirms

"So there are vampires and werewolves, how many?" My mom asks keeping her cool.

"About 70 vampires and 60 werewolves most live out of town however because we're the only school that will take them, off the record of course,"

"Are there any other humans?" My dad asks

"Megan is the only one enrolled at the moment but we've had human students in the past," Mr. Steve says and I can feel the fear coming off my dad.

"Great," He mutters and judging by Mr. Steve trying to hide a laugh he heard him.

"I would be more than happy to answer any of your questions Mr. and Mrs. Ross but school starts in 10 minutes so we will have to end this meeting," He says calmly

Dad looks at me and I put a hand gently on his shoulder.

"I'll be fine,"

They get up and mom gives me a hug.

"Meet us at the clinic after school okay," She says and I nod.

After they leave Mr. Steve goes into the waiting area. When he comes back he brings four people with him.

"Megan, This is Rose and Adam, they are vampires," He says pointing to a young woman with brown hair and a young man who also has brown hair. They look alike they must be siblings. He then points to a teenage girl with black hair and a teenage boy with blonde hair.

"This is Jen and Ryan, they are werewolves,"

"Hi,"

"She doesn't look like she hates us," Ryan says suddenly and I laugh.

"Ryan!" Jen says smacking him upside the head "I'm sorry he has no filter," She tells me.

"It's fine,"

"I trust you all will make sure she feels welcome and no one eats her," Mr. Steve says

"Absolutely," Adam says

Mr. Steve hands me my schedule,

"You're enrolment papers says your in the Junior EMT program," He says and I nod "The med kit is under lock and key with the secretary," He continues and then leaves the room.

"So," Rose says "I want to start with that we aren't going to eat you," I nod

"What's your first class?" Jen asks

"Chemistry," I say looking at my schedule

"That's my first class too, I'll take you," Adam says and I stand up to follow him after everyone else says we'll meet after class.

"So when did you move here?" Adam asks

"About two weeks ago,"

"Rose and I have been here for about 60 years, I know that sounds weird but we're vampires," He says with a laugh

"If you don't mind me asking, how old are you?"

"I'm 251, and Rose is 250, but she's looks 17 and I look 18,"

"Makes sense,"

"Steve is also a vampire,"

"I noticed,"

"You did?" He questions

"When my dad was freaking out I could tell that he could hear was my dad was whispering,"

"Super senses would allow that," He tells me "What's an Junior EMT?" He asks

"The Junior part is mostly about my age but I went to EMT school over the summer so I'm fully trained,"

"What's it for?"

"It's mostly for small towns like North River who only have small clinics like my parents clinic, it helps relieve the pressure," I explain and he nods

"Makes sense,"

We stop at a classroom and I take a deep breath.

"Don't worry, you'll be fine," He tells me

"Thanks,"

With that he opens the door and we go in
