Chapter Three: Adjusting

I wake up already knowing that my parents have left for work. I get up, get dressed and look at the time. I don't have to be at school for another hour so I decide to call Lauren.

"Megan?"

"Hey Lauren What's Up?"

"Oh you know the usual high school problems, by the way how's your new school?"

"Interesting,"

"How so?"

"Different classes, like supernatural history,"

"Like vampires and werewolves?"

"Yeah, it's just myths they want us to learn what the town used to be like,"

"Oh that sounds cool,"

"I miss you,"

"I miss you too, but spring break is coming soon and I'm coming to visit,"

"Really?"

"Yeah, mom said I could she wants to let me have freedom,"

"Awesome,"

"I'll talk later, I need to head to school,"

"Okay bye Lauren,"

"Bye Meg,"

I hate having to lie to her but if I told her I risk the secrets getting out. I can't wait to see her on spring break. I quickly eat some breakfast and head out to my truck. My dad got me my own vehicle when I got my license so that way I'd be able to get around when they are at work.

"Megan!" A voice I recognize as Rose yells when I open my door.

"Yeah,"

"This is yours?" She asks, I shake my head yes.

"Cool,"

"So anything interesting happen lately?" I ask

"No not really, how about you?"

"I called my friend Lauren this morning,"

"How was it?"

"Good, she's visiting for spring break,"

"Did you tell her about us?" She asks nervous.

"No don't worry,"

As we're walking into the building I feel this extreme force taking the air out of my lungs.

"I'm hungry and you're blood is what I'm craving," The vampire says slowly

"Let her go!" Rose yells

"Your a vampire Rose, you and I both know that we need blood,"

"You're a coward," I say clearly

"What did you say?" He asks putting pressure around my neck.

"You heard me, your a coward If you wanted my blood so bad you would have already taken it, but you're afraid,"

"I'm not afraid,"

"Then prove it," I say. He just stands there his hand now loose around my neck. "That's what I thought, now unlike you I age so I'm gonna go learn," I say but he doesn't let me go.

"I'm not done yet," He tells me

"Are you gonna let me go?" I ask

"No,"

That's when I remember something I learned in EMT school.

"Okay," I say and then I snap his neck knowing he would wake in an hour. When I look to my left Mr Steve is looking at me along with Rose and Adam.

"I'm not going to be in trouble for that right?"

"No, he'll be fine and he was attacking you,"

"Are you okay?" Rose asks as Jen, Ryan and Adam come running over.

"Yeah, that sucked," I say "Who was that anyway?"

"Patrick White, his family is from out of town and let's just say they don't teach respect,"

"Wait so how many vampire families are there?" I ask as we're walking in.

"Well there's the Northern Alliance which consists of three vampire families, The Stones which is mine and Adam's family the West's and the Williams," Rose explains

"Then there are the Northern Opposition which consists of two families the Whites and the Morgans," Adam continues

"The wolves are also in alliance with the Northern Alliance," Jen adds "Any questions?" She asks

"Why are they called the Northern Opposition?" I ask

"They were opposed to integrating with human society, I'll explain in more detail another time,"

"Okay, how do they feel about humans?" I ask trying to hide the sadness in my voice.

"Don't worry the families we're in alliance with respect humans they won't hurt you and the wolves they are really nice," Rose explains

"It's not like the movies," Ryan adds and I laugh.

"Yeah, I'm now realizing how inaccurate they are,"

The morning goes by quickly and now I'm sitting with Adam, Rose, Jen and Ryan for lunch.

"Can vampires have human food?" I ask

"Yeah we can eat anything humans can eat, blood is just something we need to stay alive, it's our equivalent to water," Adam says "Are you busy tonight?" He asks me

"No,"

"There's a meeting tonight between the vampire families and the wolves to discuss things, do you want to come?" He tells me.

"What would I do?" I ask

"We'll introduce you to them, they'll be excited about a new person in town and we can teach you about our world and not just the stuff you learn in supernatural history class,"

"Okay, but if any of them go for my throat they're getting they're neck snapped,"

"Noted," he says "I'll pick you up around 6,"

"Okay anything I should wear?"

"Don't be too formal,"

I nod and finish my lunch.

Mom says that I'm able to go the meeting. We don't tell dad because we all know what's going to happen. I look at the clock, It's 5 pm. I go upstairs and pick out an outfit. Black leggings, a navy top paired with a black leather jacket. For my shoes I choose some black hiking boots. I haven't worn an outfit like this in along time. I try to blend in and not go bold with my outfits but when you're in a town full of supernaturals there's no blending in. I curl my hair which I also haven't done in a long time.

"Megan, your rides here!" Mom calls

"Coming!" I say

I get my bag and run downstairs. I open the door to see Adam standing there.

"You look different," He comments

"I've stopped blending in," I tell him

"It's true," My mom buts it "She usually dresses bold,"

"Nice to meet you Mrs. Ross," Adam says

"You too Adam, If it's alright to ask, what are you?"

"Vampire Mrs. Ross, don't worry I won't hurt your daughter,"

"I trust you, but some advice my husband is hesitant so be careful,"

"I will," "You ready?" He asks

"Yeah, I just need to get my medical bag from my truck,"

"Okay,"

"Bye mom," I tell her

"Bye,"

I get my bag from my truck and then head to Adam's car.

"So I told everyone that there's a human coming,"

"Okay, how did they feel about it?" I ask

"They're excited, especially the kids," He says smiling

"So what do you guys talk about,"

"Mostly just catching up on things in our lives and talking about what's happening in the town,"

"Okay,"

We pull up to the house and I hop out putting my bag in my back.

"Is there a reason you took that?"

Adam asks pointing to my bag.

"It's an unwritten rule that you take your medical bag everywhere that won't have a med kit, in case something happens,"

"And you took supernatural medicine so if something happens here you're the one that has to fix it,"

I nod and we go inside.
