Chapter Five: The Vampire

The meeting ends after about an hour and everyone expect Ryan's pack goes home.

"What happened to your Alpha?" I ask while we're sitting in the living room.

"Do you promise not to judge us?"

Ryan asks

"Of course," I say sincerely

"Our Alpha, his name is Troy and he's not very good to us," Ryan explains I can tell this is hard for him.

"It's okay, if you don't want to keep going," I say gently,

"No, I have to tell someone it's eating me alive," He insists and I nod.

"He isn't a good leader, he would boss me around and treat the girls like objects," "He would hit Grace a lot, that's why she's scared of new people because she thinks that they will hit her," He explains

"What happened to him? I ask

"We don't know, one day we woke up and he was gone, he hasn't been back since," He tells me.

"When was that?" I ask

"About a year ago,"

I can tell that what he just told me has been bothering him for who knows how long. He looks better now like there's been a weight lifted off of his chest.

"Thank you, for letting me tell you," He says and I nod.

Adam offers to take me home so I grab my bag and my jacket and my bag. I say goodbye to everyone and then we go to the car.

"I have a question and I didn't really want to ask in front of everyone,"

"Go for it," He tells me

"You said that vampires use hypnosis to calm the person before they feed, but why hypnotize them when your saliva will calm them anyway,"

"We do it to calm the blood pressure it allows the sedative to last longer and it also allows us to wipe their memory so they won't expose us,"

"We also feed the person our blood to heal the wound,"

"Vampire blood heals humans?" I ask

"Yeah we forget to mention that," He says with a small laugh. He walks me to my front door and before I go inside he stops me.

"I want you to have this," He says showing me a beautiful antique necklace. It's in the shape of an oval. It's gold and has small flowers on the front.

"I has Rosemary in it, it will prevent the vampires hypnosis from controlling you,"

"I thought it had to be in your system?" I ask.

"That's what they say in class because wearing jewelry isn't really a thing anymore," He explains and I laugh

He offers to put it on me so I turn around and feel him clasp it around my neck.

"Thank you," I say and he smiles

"Never take it off," He says firmly and I nod in understanding.

"I'll be at the clinic all day tomorrow helping my parents," I tell him

"Okay, I might come down see if any of you need anything,"

"Okay,"

With that I go inside quietly to not wake up my parents and go to bed for the night.

"Morning mom," I say as I throw a sweater over my purple scrubs that I only wear when helping my parents.

"Morning Meg, how was last night?" She asks.

"Good, I learned a lot,"

"That's good, your dad and I have appointments today so if we need help you can assist," She explains.

"Alright, I'm gonna go do my hair," I say and head to the bathroom. I brush out my hair and put it into a tight bun to keep my hair up. I head back out the kitchen and mom hands me a plate of waffles.

"That's a nice necklace sweetie, who gave it to you?" Mom asks

"Adam did last night it has Rosemary in it , it prevents vampires from using their powers on me," I explain and she nods.

"That's nice of him," Mom says

"He might stop by the clinic to see if we need anything,"

"He's a gentlemen," Mom says looking at me and raising her eyebrows.

I roll my eyes and she laughs. I finish my breakfast and mom and I head to the clinic because her first appointment is early. Dad doesn't have an appointment til 12:30 in the afternoon. I lay my bag in the back seat of the truck and I drive off with my mom in the passenger seat.

The drive doesn't take long and Mom and I head inside and she gets started on her patient records.

"We have a young girl coming in this morning she needs some injections, her mother says she's afraid of needles," she says.

"How old is she?" I ask

"Nine,"

"I can do them, I've always been good with kids,"

She nods and I go and make sure everything is ready. 9:00 rolls around and Mom says that her patient will be here soon. Just then Adam comes walking through the door.

"Hey,"

"Hey, how's it going,"

"Good, mom has a patient coming in soon,"

"Need any help?" He asks and that's when I get an idea.

"Hold on," I say and call out to my mom. She comes over and then I start explaining.

"Our patient is a nine year old girl and she's going to be nervous maybe you could some of your vampire powers to help us," I say and he nods.

"Yeah, I've always been good with kids,"

"Same as Megan," Mom says and then leaves.

I'm showing Adam behind the desk when the girl comes in with I assume is her mother. "Hi, my names Megan how can I help you today?" I ask calmly

"Hi, my daughter has an appointment with Dr. Ross,"

"What's her name?" I ask

"Alexis," She says and then her phone rings. She takes the phone call leaving her daughter at the desk. She hangs up the phone and comes back over. "Alexis, Mommy has to do some work, I'll be back after your appointment okay," Honestly this has me shocked.

"What?, no,"

"You'll be okay, I'm sorry," She says then leaves.

I see that mom saw the entire conversation and she looks surprised.

"Alexis sweetheart, it's going to be okay," I tell her coming around the counter.

"Mommy said I need shots I don't like shots," She says crying.

"I know shots aren't fun, but their important and I happen to be really quick when I give shots," I say

My mom comes over and bends down to her level next to me. "Alexis, my name is Kate and Megan is my daughter and that nice man over there," She says motioning to Adam "Is Megan's friend Adam,"

Adam waves and smiles and Alexis waves back.

"I need to do a check-up, don't worry no shots is that okay?" Mom asks

"No shots?" She asks

"No shots, I promise but we'll have to do them after okay,"

She nods and my mom takes her hand. They walk back and I go over to Adam.

"She's terrified," Adam says and I nod.

"Do you think you could help?" I ask

"Yeah, your mom can't be in the room because it might affect her mind too."

"What are you going to do?" I ask

"Simple, I'm gonna tell her a story to distract her and as she listens my hypnosis will take affect and she'll relax,"

"She's young, don't scare her,"

"I won't,"

Mom finishes what she needs to do pretty quickly and then calls out to Adam and I. "Mrs. Ross, I can help her relax but you can't be in the room because it could affect you too," He explains and she nods

"Okay, and please you can call me Kate, Mrs Ross makes me feel old,"

Adam laughs and then we head inside the room with Alexis. I can see the fear in her eyes and the look of dread on her face.

"Alright sweetie we have to do your shots now okay," I tell her

She lets out a small whimper and Adam sits next to her on the bed.

"It's going to be okay sweetheart, Megan is going to be quick and if you want I can hold on your hand and tell you a story," He says gently. I know he said he was good with kids but I didn't realize he was that good.

"Mommy always let me sit in her lap," She whispers, Adam smiles and lets her sit in his arms.

"Thank you," She whispers

"You're welcome, what story do you want to hear I know one about a princess and one about a butterfly,"

"Princess," She says and he smiles

"That was my sister's favourite when she was your age," He says and then starts to tell the story. His voice becomes soft and smooth. It's different then when he's talking normally.During the story he tells her to relax and that she's tired. It works and in about 5 minutes she's limp in his arms. I come over next to them with the two injections that she needs.

"Alright, Alexis you're going to feel two small pinches and then you'll be all done," I tell her and I see her tense slightly.

"Easy little one, your relaxed remember," Adam says gently and she relaxes again.

I quickly do the injections and put band-aids on the small puncture holes.

"Alexis, you're all done sweetheart you were so brave," Adam tells her as she comes out of the hypnotic haze.

"You did them?" She asks confused

"I did,"

"What did you do to me?" She asks Adam he smiles gently.

"I didn't do anything you fell asleep during my story," He says lying but it's for her own good.

"Oh okay,"

I knock on the door to let mom know we're done and she comes in.

"Good job sweetie, your mom waiting for you," Mom says as Adam helps her off the bed.

"Okay, thank you," She says to both of us.

She leaves with my mom and Adam helps me clean up.

"You're good with kids," I say making small conversation.

"I've always liked kids, if I could have children I would,"

"Thanks for lying, I wouldn't know what to say,"

"I'm a vampire I have to lie to survive,"

He seems to be thinking about something as we're putting the last of the supplies away. "What are you thinking?" I ask

"Do you want to go on a date with me?" He asks and I smile

"You would want to go on a date with me?" I ask, he nods

"Okay, how about tonight, I'm free,"

"Okay, I'll pick you up at 7,"

"It's a date," I reply

"It's a date," He confirms.
