Chapter 8

On the way Ch 8

What makes a Master Merchant

Ten dark skinned pointy eared people were sweating and panting despite the chilly wind. They worked in rhythm with the counting the first one was shouting. Near the boxes the only blonde boy among them harshly wrote notes to a stack of document.

“…and the last one guys! Come on move your fat asses and get on the puppies!”

The puppies Nalaka was referring to were taller than most humans and weighted 300 kg. They were emerald tailed wolfs. Ramir rubbed the belly of his precious companion Farkas and got on him.

“Let’s start moving guys, we don’t have all day!”

“Yes Boss!”

The hierarchy between the dark elf’s were clear. They automatically took the traveling formation. Scouts first, then fighters, the goods with Ramir, Nalaka and the rest in the back.

“Can’t wait to get back. The only thing they serve in Thaleds is horse piss.”

“Yeah…”

“What’s the long face for blondie boy? Got someone I should give a good beating?”

“Haaa…no…Its just…well…”

“Spit it out!”

“So you know, I sometimes go out at night and do things.”

“Yes, and what of it?”

“Last time I got home the Lady was still in the kitchen…”

“Did she scold you or some shit?”

“No…”

“Did she like hit you?”

Nalakas hands were tightening in a fist.

“No, but let me finish. So she…wasn’t even asking anything…just…told me to wash myself and eat. And now I feel kinda icky when I see her.”

“So you wanted her to react, but she didn’t. Hmm…that’s hard kid. But I think she’s waiting for you to tell.”

“Why would she?”

“Why wouldn’t she? is she your mother? No. Is she your guardian? well kinda but at the end of the day you will be legally adult soon. Just don’t take her for a fool. I’m sure she knows exactly what you’re doing and the only reason why you had no trouble until now is because she cleans up after the shitshow you leave.”

A case of theft: this story is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.

“But how could she-“

“Listen kid, even I could find you and there are way better people in this kind of things that me. The Lady is one of the tops. I know you are at the age when you think you are the shit, but little blondie the news I have for you.”

“So, I should just talk to her?”

“That’s on you buddy, just don’t do one thing. Lying to her. You don’t stand a chance, and she won’t tolerate it.”

“Okay thanks for the advice. How do you know this better than me? I’m the one living with her.”

“Told you to learn to listen and observe. The more you do it the more it will become secund nature. When you will be at my age you will pick up things faster.”

“Boss they are here again.”

Their conversation came to an end. The scouts have spotted the nordern soldier brigade from afar. The conflict with them became daily as they had to get trough them. Bribing usually worked, but they become cheeky as of late.

“Look Tony the black caravan is here again! We should bring a few bags to fill it up.”

“Yeah, happily bringing us the bonus. They must be really of a low intelligence race.”

“Like bathing in mud where a hobby, dirty little things.”

“But at least their coins are shiny. Hahaha”

Ramir felt hi chest tightening. Blood rushed in his head and his hands started fidgeting. Nalaka hopped down from the carriage.

“Good sirs, I’m sorry to tell you but our employer would not like to pay more than the agreed payment was from now on.”

“Then you filthy things can go back wherever you came from!”

The shouting man spat on the ground the other took out their swords. Nalaka sighed.

“I hoped we could solve things nicely but oh well. Guys let get out some steam.”

As she finished her sentence, she punched the guard to the ground crushing his skull. The next second the two sides crushed to each other.

Nalaka grabbed the next guy’s throat choking him. Ramir pulled out his wires and wrapped around a soldier’s arm before tightening it, cutting the whole thing off. The guy’s painful cries echoed in his ears. His heartrate rose and cheeks flushed. His panting became louder and lauder.

“Snap out of it kid! Told you to kill them with one attack!”

Nalaka shot the screaming guy on the head with her crossbow, then moved on to the next opponent. Ramir collected himself but the rosy cheeks remained.

As he run around hands moving faster and more accurate the limbs of soldiers rained on the scene. The whole fight took half an hour.

“Okay guys now take every damn thing we can, then make a pile of the corpses and burn them! You ‘kay kiddo?”

“Yeah, just got a little too exited…”

“I told you many times, cut where the arteries are or the neck. If you prolong a fight your chances of winning will exponentially decrease. You have a weak body so the element of surprise is your best shot.”

Ramir just nodded. He heard Nalaka’s teachings a million times. Fight isn’t about fairness, but who lives and dies. He then helped the other members gathering the things. They found some items that will come in handy; some potions, mana powder, weapons, armors and a tattered envelope to Commander Patrick Kusneu.

“Hmm… I just happen to know someone who might need this letter.”

“Me too…”

Nalaka and Ramir had smiles so wide it almost reached their ears.

They continued their journey to Thaleds. When they arrived, a small village welcomed them. A group of children with various scars and bandages sat on the benches and masked adults looked out the windows. Ramir got of the carriage and hesitated a bit before knocking on the main house.

The heavy iron door opened with deafening screech. The one who opened the door was a middle-aged man with circular glasses. His face and body were bony like he didn’t eat for weeks. Under his eyes the dark circles looked like they would stay there permanently. His curly dark hair disheveled under his hat. His red eyes full of fanatic sparkling and mouth dry and chapped. Ramir and Nalaka gulped before going in.
