Chapter 15: Discharge day
Today was the day I would finally leave the hospital. I never thought Iâd spend the summer of my freshman year of high school in a hospital room. Iâll have to ask everyone to do their best for the fall tournament⦠Iâve got training to do, and Iâll use next yearâs spring tournament as a training ground for next yearsâ Koshien.
I was thinking about what I would do as I packed my bags.
âGood morning!â
Aizawa-san was in a good mood, smiling as she came in, and the old lady answered.
âHuh? Haruka-chan, I thought you werenât coming today.â
âYes, I wasnât going to come today.â (Haruka)
âThen what seems to be the occasion?â (Harukaâs grandma)
âThere was⦠Ah, Yoshizumi-san! Iâm glad I could make it.â
Wait what? Does it have something to do with me?
âGood morning, Aizawa-san. How can I help you?â (Hiroto)
âYoshizumi-san, I heard you were going to be discharged from the hospital today⦠please eat this at home if youâd like.â
âHuh? Yes⦠thank youâ¦?â
I didnât know what it was, but I took it anyway.
âOh, itâs a⦠hospital discharge gift! Since you said you were going to spend your birthday in the hospital, this is also a celebration for you!â (Haruka)
What was handed to me was a birthday cake.
âUm⦠donât worry about it. I was practicing making cakes to celebrate my grandmaâs upcoming discharge from the hospital.â (Haruka)
âI see. Well, Iâll eat it when I get home. Thank you very much. I didnât expect to have a birthday cake this year, so Iâm happy.â (Hiroto)
I was surprised, but convinced that it was just for practice. Well, thereâs no way⦠She would go to the trouble of making one. I accepted the cake with gratitude.
âIâm going to go home and do some shopping. What is it, Grandma?â (Haruka)
âHaruka-chan⦠itâs nothingâ¦â
I wonder what Aizawa-sanâs grandmother was thinking about.
âOkay. Yoshizumi-san, Iâll take my leave now. Please take care of yourself.â (Haruka)
âYes, thank you very much for the cake. Take care of yourself, Aizawa-san.â (Hiroto)
And with that, Aizawa-san left. I was just about to leave to meet up with Saito-san in the lobby.
âJeezâ¦â (Harukaâs Grandma)
Huh? I felt her eyes on me again.
âUm⦠Ms. Aizawa, how can I help you?â
âYou guys⦠must have been close after all. My discharge isnât until October.â
I wonder why Ms.Aizawa is misunderstanding. The cake was probably just a way to apologize for⦠seeing me cry.
I donât know why I was being treated like Aizawaâs plaything. Then my parents came to pick me up.
âAizawa-san Iâll be going now. Thanks for your kindness.â (Hiroto)
âTake care of yourself, Yoshizumi-kun. Iâll also be leaving the hospital soon, but Iâll have to be patient until then. Please take care of Haruka-chan.â (Harukaâs Grandma)
Toru had already completed the discharge procedures, so we headed to the lobby to meet Saito-san and his son, who were already there waiting for us.
âSaito-san! Thank you for waiting.â (Hiroto)
âIâm glad youâre discharged. My parents are over there. Iâll go get them.â
Saito-san then came back with his parents.
âSorry for keeping you waiting, Yoshizumi-kun. Huh? Mari-san from Sakurai-sanâs house! Wait whatâ¦?â (Saitoâs mother)
Saito-sanâs mother looked at my momâs face and made a surprised sound as she covered Saito-sanâs face.
She called my mom âSakurai-sanâ andâ¦
