Chapter 25: The Beginning of School
POV: Hiroto
Yoichiro contacted me and was happy when I told him that my cast was off and I was going to be in rehab, but since I couldnât play in the fall tournament, I would be cheering in the stands. I was told not to come to practice, and that the team would be in trouble if something happened to me. Toru-san strictly told me not to move too recklessly.
This is the only thing that made me think pushing Yoichiro to be the captain was the right choice.
Ever since I came to Saijo City, even since junior high school, it has been baseball every day. What am I supposed to do in rehab?
I had nothing to do, I was in trouble. âStudy,â I was told. But I already did that on the daily, so there wasnât any difference.
The next morning, I arrived at Saijo station and went to a convenience store to buy some things before heading to school. I was approached by quite a few people from our school, âI see you got your cast off,â âGood luck,â. It made me happy that they wanted me to heal quickly.
When I entered the classroom and sat with Yoichiro, Ando and Sanada, I had no idea what they were talking about.
âHave you thought of a class project?â
âYes, but itâs a secret!â
âHmm? What are you guys talking about?â (Hiroto)
I had no idea what they were talking about. When I asked Yoichiro, he told me it was about the school festival. Yesterday, my homeroom teacher had told us to think of ideas for the festival, and in the first period we were going to decide what our class would do. I havenât thought about it at all and itâs a bit too late now.
âI donât have anything⦠all I could think about was the hospitalâ¦â (Hiroto)
âIt looked like they were going to take the cast off or something.â
âWhy donât you think about it now?â
âDo you guys have any good ideas?â
As we were talking, the homeroom teacher, Suzuki-sensei, came in. Our time was up.
âQuiet down, Iâm going to give you the details of the festival now. Youâre all in the first year, so keep that in mind. Itâs the same every year.â (Suzuki-sensei)
The cultural festival at Saijo High School was held in late October and lasted for two days: the first day was for students only, and the second day was for the general public, including parents.
Since we share the same train station, Saijo and Toko University coordinate their schedules.
Toko University has their festival in mid-october, a week earlier than us.
âThatâs all, Takahashi , please take care of the rest.â (Suzuki-sensei)
Chiaki Takahashi, a member of the class council, stepped forward and began to speak.
âAs Sensei said yesterday, weâre going to decide on the festival committee now. One male and one female for each class, so raise your hand if you want to be on the committee.â (Takahashi)
âââ¦ââ
âNo one? If youâre not doing club activities and youâre not busy, why donât you raise your hand? Itâs a chance to earn some extra points.â (Takahashi)
âââ¦ââ
âWell, if thatâs how itâs going to beâ¦â (Takahashi)
Takahashi-san was muttering as if she had given up.
âI understand. Iâll take care of the girls, and you take care of the boys.â (Takahashi)
âWhat?â (Hiroto)
What was she talking about⦠donât tell me-
âYes, I said Yoshizumi-kun. Is there a problem?â
âIâm busy with club activities and rehab. What about someone from the homecoming club?â (Hiroto)
âHiroto. I was told you werenât allowed to do club activities, right?â (Yoichiro)
It seems like Yoichiro had defected to the enemyâs side.
âYou should do it, there will still be time for rehab!â (Yoichiro)
âYoshizumi. Iâll help you if you need anything!â (Ando)
âYeah, Iâll help as well!â (Sanada)
Ando and Sanada arrived as Yoichiroâs reinforcements⦠I give upâ¦
As long as my legs wonât get overworked, I guess it could be fun and a good way to get some extra points.
âFine⦠Iâll do it.â (Hiroto)
âThank you, please come to the front.â
As I stepped forward, Takahashi-san whispered in a voice that only I could hear.
âIâm really sorry⦠outside of the people in sport clubs, many of them arenât even paying attention to the cultural festivalâ¦â (Takahashi)
She was right, if you look at the students in the classroom, many of them had their notebooks opened and werenât even listening.
âMy doctor told me that I had recovered enough to do most daily activities, if it wasnât fine, I wouldnât have accepted this role anyways.â (Hiroto)
âIs this what you were talking about yesterday morning? If so, I wish you had told me yesterday.â
âTakahashi-san and I will be in the organizing committee for the festival, so please take care of us. Now that itâs decided, weâll do our best, so letâs have fun.â (Hiroto)
Most of the students in the class responded cooperatively, and the others seemed at least a bit interested.
The students reading the textbooks looked up for a moment, but then immediately dropped their eyes back to the book.
We seemed to be in a bit of trouble, and our teacher didnât have the brightest expression either.
I didnât want to have to do this but⦠it might be our only chance at getting the whole class to cooperate.
âThose textbook readers over there, can you hear me? Are you sure you want to continue ignoring us? You might have gotten a higher GPA if you were on the committee.â (Hiroto)
âHey, Yoshizumi, donât go there.â (Takahashi)
I restrained Takahashi-san with my hand.
âLeave it to me. Sensei, a cultural festival is a school event, right?â (Hiroto)
âYes, that is correct.â
âWhat if someone decides not to participate? That would mean a lack of cooperation. Doesnât that affect the internal application score?â (Hiroto)
âOf course, it will affect their grades. You all know what heâs talking about, right?â (Suzuki-sensei)
The guys who had decided not to participate were putting their textbooks away in their desks.
âYoshizumi, Iâm sorry I made you say that.â (Takahashi)
âIâm sorry for the way I said it. It was the only way we could get everyone to cooperate. And I want everyone to have fun, too. Weâll all be in the same class for three years. They will probably be busy studying for exams from next year. So, why donât we all enjoy this cultural festival as first-year students?â (Hiroto)
They all looked at me and nodded. Iâm glad I got the message to everyone
I was glad that Takahashi-san and Suzuki-sensei understood my intentions. Now we can go about preparing for the festival as a class.
