Chapter 29: Central Park
âYes, Iâll go with you.â (Haruka)
âIâm just going to see if the field is usable for practice. I donât think thereâs anything interesting there, okay?â (Hiroto)
âI donât have anything to do today, so Iâll be fine. I just wanted to see what people do on the field.â (Haruka)
Well, thatâs okay. I wanted to ask her something while I was there, but Iâll do it when the time is right.
âOkay. Shall we go then?â (Hiroto)
âYes!â (Haruka)
At the park, there were many adults and children running and talking on benches. I walked through the park with Aizawa-san. [TLN: I probably messed up this sentence.]
âAre we going to the field?â (Haruka)
âWell, Iâd like to throw a few balls if I can.â (Hiroto)
âIâll watch then.â
âI donât think it would be fun to watch⦠I remember you asking me to teach you baseball.â
âDo you want to try, Aizawa-san?â
âIâve never thrown before. Iâm not that good at sportsâ¦â
âItâs easy. Iâll teach you.â
âOkay! Iâll give it a try.â
I know you said youâd watch, but I want you to have a little fun.
âKeep your right foot where it is, and you donât have to lift your left foot, but when you throw, put your left foot forward and try throwing the ball.â (Hiroto)
Aizawa-san kept repeating herself while practicing.
âLike this?â (Haruka)
â⦠youâre so cute.â
âHm? What did you say?â
I think I said it out loud⦠Iâm glad she didnât hear me.
âI didnât say anything.â (Hiroto)
âI donât think so. Iâm sure I heard somethingâ¦â (Haruka)
âItâs just your imaginationâ¦â
I took a glove out of the bag, put it on my hand, and readied it.
âGet ready! Iâm going to throw it!â
Sheâs too cute⦠Aizawaâs ball took off with a nice trajectory and landed in the glove I was holding.
âIt landed! I did it!â (Haruka)
She was happy, smiling and jumping up and down in little bouncy steps. Seeing her like that, all I could think was how cute she was. After that, I received the ball thrown by Aizawa-san several times.
âWhew! Yoshizumi-kun! That was a lot of fun.â
âIâm glad you had fun. Shall we take a little break on the bench?â
She sat down on the bench and drank something she had bought from a vending machine.
âI was surprised at how expressive you are, Aizawa-san. Iâve always thought of you as a quiet girl.â (Hiroto)
âEhâ¦?â (Haruka)
Did I say something weird? I thought back on what I said but couldnât think of anything. Meanwhile, Aizawa-san seemed to remember and had a variety of expressions on her face.
âUm⦠I seem to have gotten carried away.â (Haruka)
âWell, Iâm glad you enjoyed it.â (Hiroto)
âIâm really sorry! Iâm not usually like thisâ¦â
âI donât know why youâre apologizingâ¦you donât have to worry about it. I thought you were pretty cute.â
I felt as if I said something weird⦠Aizawa-san is looking down and her face is turning red. I need to change the subjectâ¦
âOhâ¦no⦠I mean Iâm glad you enjoyed it! I wanted to ask you⦠do you want anything for your birthday?â
Somehow, I managed to change the subject. I got a cake on the day I left the hospital, and I wanted to give her something in return, but I didnât know what she wanted.
âBirthday..? Whyâ¦?â
âYou got me a cake, didnât you?â Your grandmother said it was in October, and I wanted to return the favor, so I thought Iâd ask.â
Iâve only given a girl something for her birthday when I was in elementary school, so I donât know what to get her.
âI didnât mean to get anything in return when I give you the cake, okay? Besides, I thought we agreed that I should thank you for what you did the other day.â (Haruka)
âI know, but I donât feel comfortable not returning the gift I received⦠do you really not want anything?â (Hiroto)
âWellâ¦I donât have anything I want⦠but Iâll be fine with whatever you pick out for me, Yoshizumi-kun.â
âOkay, donât get mad if I give you something weirdâ¦â
âI wouldnât get mad at you for that.â
Iâll have to look for something at the mall next time.
âIâm fine with anything you pick out. I had fun today.â
âIâll do that. Iâm banned from club activities right now, so Iâll send you a message when Iâm going to the hospital.â
We exchanged contact information, but I donât remember ever contacting her. But still, she enjoyed learning about baseball today.
âShall we head home now?â (Hiroto)
I put the gloves and ball in my bag and headed for the station. A good amount of time had passed, and the setting sun was shining down on us.
âIâm going this way, Yoshizumi, so bye-bye. Contact me when youâre ready.â
âIâll do that. See you later.â
Aizawa-san was waving her hand in the same gesture as when I met her at the ticket gate before. I knew she was a girl with a lot of emotions. I got on the train and went home. The first thing I did when I got home was to greet my family. I thought it was a good opportunity and decided to ask him.
âHiroto-kun. Welcome home.â (Toru)
âIâm home, Toru-san. Is this a good time? I need to talk to you.â (Hiroto)
âItâs a good time. What is it?â
âYes, itâs about my mother. I was wondering if itâs okay if I ask you about the past.â
âThe past? I havenât been able to ask her much either. What do you want to know?â
âI want to ask you about my childhood friend who lived next door. I havenât been able to contact her since I came to Saijo⦠and I really want to see her.â
Toru-san thought about it for a while.
