Chapter 32: Truth
After talking with Toru-san, I waited for my mother to come home.
âIâm back! Iâll make you guys a meal soon.â (Mari)
âMari-san, could we have a word?â (Toru)
âWhatâs the matter with you two?â (Mari)
She prepared drinks for the three of us and sat down in front of us.
âMom⦠I want to know about Harukaâ¦â (Hiroto)
âHaruka-chanâ¦?â (Mari)
âIâve been wanting to ask her ever since we moved. But I couldnât ask. If you know, then please tell me.â (Hiroto)
âHiroto⦠Iâm sorry. Even now, you never ask me anything, so I thought it would be better if I didnât talk about it either⦠Itâs still hard for me to think about Renji. But now that you and Toru are here, Iâm okay.â (Mari)
âMom⦠Iâm sorryâ¦â (Hiroto)
âItâs about Haruka, isnât it? Iâm sorry Hiroto, I donât remember. Around a year after we moved, I got a call from Haruka-chanâs mother, but I donât remember what she told meâ¦â
âHaruka-chanâs mother called?â
âYes, thatâs all I remember⦠Hiroto got together with Toru in the sixth grade, right? I called him to give him our current address at that time, but the line wasnât in use and the call couldnât get through.â (Mari)
TLN: 6th grade is the last year of elementary school in Japan!
âSo you donât know where she isâ¦?â (Hiroto)
âYes⦠Hiroto never asked me, so I thought it would be best to not tell youâ¦â (Mari)
Haruka-chan might have moved? Noâ¦it might be possible if only her number changed⦠If sheâs moved, maybe sheâs still in the neighborhood. Iâm busy with club activities now⦠maybe itâs time to let goâ¦
âItâs not your fault. I didnât have a choice at the time⦠Iâll try to go over there once before rehab is over. Iâm going to look for Haruka. If sheâs not there, then maybe thereâs someone there who knows where she is.â (Hiroto)
âYes⦠Hiroto still⦠cares about Haruka-chanâ¦â (Mari)
âIâve always wanted to meet her. I distracted myself by playing baseball, but I canât move on unless I face it.â
âYes⦠I understand. Do you want me to come with you?â (Mari)
âItâs okay, Iâll go by myself.â
She says sheâs fine, but Iâm worried about taking my mom to a place where thereâs memories of Renji-san. When I do go, itâll be after the school festival.
âThank you, Mom. Toru-san, you too.â (Hiroto)
âHiroto, Iâm not sure if Haruka-chan will be there or not, but I hope you find her.â (Toru)
âYeahâ¦â (Hiroto)
The mood was getting somber, but then Toru-san dropped a bomb on me.
âMore importantly, Hiroto-kun⦠you said you canât move forward. Are you talking about Aizawa-sanâs granddaughter?â (Toru)
âEh?! What, no!â (Hiroto)
Toru-san grinned and said, âHiroto, youâre popular with girls. Thatâs never happened to you before, has it?â
Mom must have understood what Toru-san was trying to do, because she said, âHiroto! You didnât tell your mother? You were getting along after all!â
Toru-san was trying to lighten and change the atmosphere between Mom and me.
Iâm really grateful to himâ¦
âWeâre on good terms⦠I just happened to run into her in front of the station!â (Hiroto)
âHiroto-kun⦠sheâs a cute girl, isnât she?â (Toru)
âHiroto! You should introduce her to your mother!â (Mari)
Toru-san⦠Thank you. My mother and I are fine now.
âI told you we just know each other! Iâm going back to my room⦠call me when itâs time to eat.â
Youâre taking it too far⦠Toru-san. What if my mother really ends up thinking itâs true!
I went back to my room and looked at my phone, there was a message from Yoichiro. It was about the schedule for the fall tournament. We were in the top four during the summer, so we were placed third and had to start our matches in the third round. Our first game was next Saturday.
I replied to Yoichiro and received an incoming call from him.
âYoichiro, whatâs up?â
âAh, Hiroto. Can you come on Saturday? If you can, I want you to be on the bench. Iâve talked to the coach and have his permission.â
âWhat are you talking about? Donât tell me⦠you arenât able to play?â
âI need you to look at the pitchers, we have to play the game with three pitchers. I want Hiroto to observe them and tell the manager how theyâre doing.â
âI canât hang around without a number, can I? Well, Iâm good to go. My rehabilitation visit is scheduled for noon, so I can make it to the game.â
After hanging up the phone, I remembered that I had promised Aizawa-san that I would call her when I went to the hospital. I should send her a messageâ¦
âGood evening. The rehabilitation day we talked about, Iâll be there next Saturday at noon. After that Iâll be free.â
I just finished typing the message and hit the send button. Is this okay? I didnât write anything weird, did I? Am I nervous because Mom and Dad were saying weird things? I hear my mom saying that the foodâs ready, so I send the message before heading down for dinner.
âSaturday afternoon will be fine. My club activities will be over in the morning, so Iâll call you when Iâm done.â
When I returned to my room and looked at my phone, I found a reply from Aizawa-san.
Come to think of it⦠what should I get for her birthday?
