âwe should go togetherâââto the dukeâs household.â
yernia had no choice but to say it. she thought it was alright as she secretly held cassianâs hand to suppress her anxiety.
âcan we, cassian?â
âyou can do what you want.â
yernia looked at cassian and gave him a small smile.
âyes, thank you!â
when cassian looked at her for the first time since herena got in the carriage, her chest felt so tight that she bit the inside of her cheek. her anxiety kept creating an image that she hated and it made her knees weaken.

it would be nice to return to the capital in a snap of a finger but yernia and her party had to travel a few more days before getting there. fortunately, yernia was able to wash up and rest at a nearby inn thanks to the carriage stopping in between villages.
âyernia, are you tired?â
âwhy?â
âyour eyes are still half-open.â
yernia rubbed her eyes tiredly. it was night, and sitting still in the carriage required more physical strength than she thought. nevertheless, she shouldnât sleep right now.
âiâm not tired. iâm fine.â
âwhy are you being stubborn? sleep if youâre sleepy. no one is telling you not to.â
âwhy arenât you sleeping?â
yernia pulled cassianâs arm after he finished washing up. as she sat on the bed, cassian came to her side and collapsed.
âwhy are you holding unto my robe like this?â
âiâm afraid youâre going leave me all of a sudden.â
âwhere am i going?â
âi donâtââ i donât know. just donât leave me behind.â
she was sleepy but her mouth still moved on its own as she swore to herself not to appear jealous. after speaking, yernia bit her lips in chagrin.
âdoes it bother you so much that you canât sleep?â
âwhat do you mean?â
yerniaâs eyes widened in shock. how did he know that she cared about her when she hadnât even shown that to cassian? she tried her best not to make it any obvious.
âdoes distancing myself bother you so much? you canât even sleep right now.â
âoh, thatâs true. yeah, itâs because of that.â
âreally?â
âiâve never thought that weâll be awkward at some point.â since herenaâs appearance, all of yerniaâs attention seemed to have focused on her. yernia kept caring about what herena might do in the future even if the woman did nothing but smile at her. Â âwill you continue to avoid me?â
yernia followed cassianâs lead and held his hand. lying her head down on his arm made her feel relieved and emotional.
âi should.â
âwhy do you have to?â
âi donât want to hurt you anymore, yernia.â
âiâm alright now. if youâre still worried, i can keep guiding you until you become stableââââ she wanted to argue just in case heâd ask whether it would work or not. but she hesitated when she suddenly realized that herenaâs name could appear on cassianâs body anytime. despite faltering, cassian didnât find it strange.
âââbut we never know. you trust me, but i canât even trust me.â
âso youâre going to keep doing this to me? i donât likeâ¦â
just when she was about to cry, cassian hugged yernia. she froze from the surprise affection, flustered from cassianâs sudden change of his heart. he had been acting the same way for half his life so why was he doing this?
âiâm sorry. just until i solve this. what do you think?â
ââ¦â¦.â
âiâll find a way in a minute.â
was it just a coincidence? at the time of herenaâs appearance, she hated cassian for keeping his distance.
yernia shook her head. âno, i donât want to. i think weâre going to be strangers forever.â
âyou make me feel powerless.â
ââ¦â¦.â
âwhen iâm with you, i canât think of anything. i donât want to hurt you so iâm just going to keep looking at you until i find a way.â
ââ¦â¦.â
âthen youâll be in big trouble. yernia.â
her accumulated stress and disappointment with cassian disappeared a little.
âbut i donât like it.â
âshould i call you âbaby nowâ? you complain most of the time.â
âdonât joke around. iâm serious.â
âbaby.â
yernia raised her head at the playful remark before moving away from cassian.
âdonât do it.â
âyou donât like it that much?â
ânever call me that!â
goosebumps broke out of her skin. when yernia rubbed her ears, cassian burst into laughter and patted her head.
âgood night, baby.â
âargh!â
âbaby, you have to be quiet. itâs nighttime, after all.â
as her lips parted in shock, cassian merely flashed her a cheeky smile.
she couldnât stand it, so she covered cassianâs mouth.
âcome on.â he drawled. âgo to sleep, baby.â
