Love Ray 2000 - Dogman x Petey

HIII, sorry for the delay!! The truth is, I had a lot of ideas for the shots, and for some, I couldn't think of many dialogues and such... But better late than never!

I want to clarify that these One-Shots are not canon; they don't actually happen in the main fanfic, so they won't affect the story.

.

.

.

.

Message 1: Hii, I love your "Love Ray 2000" story 😭😭💗, I honestly think it's so cute! I love the pacing and how soft it is :3. You know, it would be really sweet to see a situation or a mini One-Shot where Dog Man hears Petey purring for the first time.

Helloooo!! Aww, reading this makes me so happy! Seriously, it means a lot to me that you're enjoying the story and its pacing. I love writing soft scenes and emphasizing that love can be expressed in many ways. Thank you so much for taking the time to say this—it truly means a lot to me.

Mini shot:

Petey's lab was completely quiet. Well, almost.

Dog Man had had a long day. Between chases, rescuing kittens from trees, and receiving tons of pets from strangers, he had returned to the lab with his ears drooping and a long yawn. It didn't take long for him to curl up on the couch, resting his head on Petey's lap, seeking his warmth like a dog after a long day of playing.

—What the...? Hey, kid, did you see this? —Petey gestured toward Dog Man, but Lil Petey was already asleep in his makeshift blanket bed, completely unaware of everything.

Dog Man whimpered softly and nuzzled against Petey's shirt, his tail barely wagging.

—You're so clingy, seriously... —Petey muttered, but he didn't make an effort to push him away.

With a resigned sigh, he lifted a clawed hand to Dog Man's head and began to stroke his fur gently, running his fingers between his ears. By now, it was almost automatic; despite his complaints, his hands seemed to act on their own when it came to Dog Man.

And then, without realizing it, it happened.

A deep, low, and constant purring sound escaped from his chest.

Dog Man perked his ears up, surprised.

Petey froze completely, his eyes wide. Even he was shocked by his own reaction.

—...No. You didn't hear that. That didn't happen.

Dog Man tilted his head and licked Petey's cheek, shifting in his lap with his tail wagging excitedly.

—It did happen! —Dog Man chirped happily— I definitely heard that!

—Shut up, Greg! —Petey snapped, his ears flattening as he felt heat rush to the tips of his whiskers.

Greg burst out laughing.

—Wow... I didn't know you were this affectionate.

—It wasn't on purpose!

Dog Man snuggled up again, rubbing his head against Petey's chest to try and make him purr again. And, unable to stop it, Petey felt another vibration escape his throat.

He let out a resigned sigh.

Maybe... it wasn't so bad.

Message 2: YOUR WRITING IS INCREDIBLE, YOU SHOULD BECOME A WRITER, I WOULD BUY ALL YOUR BOOKS!

Aaaaah, thank you so much!! Your comment truly makes me so happy. Writing is something I absolutely love, so reading things like this motivates me a lot. Thanks for giving the story a chance!

Message 3: I am your most loyal flan.

JHSKJ this makes me so happy. I promise to keep serving you good food so you can continue being my most loyal flan (?) Thanks for your support!!

Message 4: Okokok, my best friend and I really ❤ your fanfics! And before you even suggested giving ideas, we were actually talking about cute scenarios for Dog Man and Petey in your fanfic, like (1) Petey taking catnip, not being in his right mind, and starting to cuddle Dog Man.

Mini shot:

Petey did it purely out of curiosity. Scientific reasons, according to him.

He had spent the past week studying different types of catnip. But, of course, science required sacrifices, and if he was going to understand exactly how it worked on felines, he had to try it himself.

The problem was that, a few minutes later, everything started to feel... too good.

His body felt lighter, his mood incredibly relaxed, and—most alarmingly—the lab, which usually seemed cold and suffocating, suddenly didn't feel so bad.

Especially because Dog Man was there.

—Petey? —Dog Man asked, ears perked up as he noticed the way the cat was staring at him.

Petey blinked slowly. Dog Man looked strangely adorable tonight. Well, he always did, but now he was noticing it more. A lot more.

And before he could overthink it, he acted on instinct.

With slow yet determined steps, Petey walked over and, without warning, settled onto Dog Man's lap.

Dog Man immediately tensed up, feeling the warm weight of his boyfriend against him.

—Something wrong...?

Petey didn't answer. He just curled up against his chest, burying his face in his neck and releasing a deep purr.

Dog Man shivered.

On one hand, his instincts told him to savor the moment—Petey was rarely this affectionate, and this felt like a dream come true. Having him like this, hugging him, curled up and purring against him... it was almost too much for his dog heart to handle.

But on the other hand... he knew why Petey was acting this way.

The catnip.

Petey wasn't completely in his right mind. And Dog Man knew that if he were sober, he probably wouldn't be snuggling in his lap, rubbing his cheek against his chest.

Was it right to enjoy this if it wasn't entirely voluntary?

Petey, oblivious to his moral dilemma, only snuggled closer, wrapping his arms around Dog Man's neck.

—You're so warm... —he mumbled drowsily, pressing a kiss to his cheek— I love how you smell.

Dog Man felt his face burn.

—P-Petey...

—Shhh... —Petey hushed him, sliding his paws over his face before planting another kiss on his other cheek— I love you so much, you know that, right?

Dog Man had to suppress an internal whimper of excitement and confusion.

Petey rarely said things like that so directly. Sure, he showed his love in his own ways—cooking for him, adjusting his lab to make Dog Man more comfortable, even giving him more hugs lately—but... this. This was new.

And he couldn't trust that it was real.

So, with all the pain in his heart, Dog Man lifted a paw and started stroking Petey's head gently.

—I love you so much too, Petey... but... —he hesitated— I don't know if this is right.

Petey lifted his head slowly, frowning, his eyes hazy.

—Mmmh? Why not?

Dog Man looked down, uncomfortable.

—Because... you're not in your right mind right now.

Petey blinked, confused.

—But I feel great.

—Yeah, but... it's not real. I don't want you to wake up tomorrow and regret it.

Petey tilted his head, still not fully understanding.

Dog Man whispered a small "sorry" and continued petting him gently, as if trying to calm him without taking advantage of the situation.

Petey processed it for a few seconds, but instead of getting annoyed, he simply purred louder and hugged him even tighter.

—You're a cute idiot, —he muttered, snuggling against him.

Dog Man just smiled, resigned, as he felt Petey's warmth completely envelop him.

—Get some rest...

.

.

.

When the catnip wore off, Petey woke up feeling strangely comfortable.

The first thing he noticed was that he was sitting on Dog Man's lap. The second, that his arms were still wrapped around his neck, his face pressed against his chest.

He stayed still. Processing the situation.

It didn't take long for the memories to come back.

Petey sighed and pulled away slightly, looking at Dog Man with a neutral expression.

—Tell me I didn't act too ridiculous.

Dog Man gave him a nervous smile.

—Well... you sat on my lap, hugged me a lot, kissed my cheeks, and said you loved how I smell.

Petey closed his eyes for a moment.

—...Great.

Dog Man patted his back with a more serious tone.

—You can't go around taking that stuff like it's nothing, Petey.

—It was for science.

—So you say...

After a moment, Petey sighed and rested his head on Dog Man's chest again.

—...I won't do it again.

Dog Man smiled, satisfied.

—Good.

A few seconds passed in silence before Petey murmured:

—Although I must admit... your lap is pretty comfortable.

Dog Man's tail wagged excitedly.

—Do you want to stay a little longer?

Petey thought for a moment before letting out a low purr and hugging him again.

—...Just for a bit.

Dog Man smiled and wrapped his arms around him, finally enjoying the moment, knowing it was completely real.

Message 5: Petey and Dog Man visit Grace's grave (Petey's mother).

Mini shot:

The icy wind blew across the field of graves, rustling the fallen leaves from the trees and carrying them along the ground. It was a gray day, the sky was overcast, and the atmosphere felt heavy, as if the very air was laden with memories and laments.

Petey walked slowly, his head lowered, while Dog Man followed in silence, noticing how his posture grew increasingly tense. He knew this day wasn't going to be easy.

Finally, they arrived. The grave stood before them—simple and unassuming, with the name "Grace" etched into the stone. Petey remained still, staring at the letters with a gaze that reflected years of repressed emotions. He hadn't been here in so long.

Guilt began to take hold of him, like a relentless wave pulling him under. His chest felt tight, as if a weight was pressing down on him. It had been years since he last visited his mother, since she had passed away from cancer when he was just a child.

"I never came back. I never showed her that I still thought about her."

A sharp pain stabbed through his chest. He sat down on the ground in front of the grave, staring at the stone with glassy eyes. He couldn't stop the dark thoughts from creeping in. He felt so awful, so useless. He had let time slip away as if everything had been forgotten. But it hadn't.

The emotions overwhelmed him. A nauseous feeling rose in his throat. Why hadn't he come sooner? Why had he let time pass so quickly?

—Petey... —Dog Man's voice was soft but strong enough to break through his dark thoughts.

Petey didn't respond. Instead, he covered his face with his hands, feeling the tears threatening to spill. He was ashamed, even a little disgusted with himself. How had he let so much time pass without paying his respects? Without coming to see her?

His stomach twisted, and the tears wouldn't stop threatening to fall. The guilt was suffocating, and the urge to vomit wasn't just physical—it was emotional. It was as if the weight of all those years without doing what he should had finally caught up to him.

Dog Man approached cautiously, crouching in front of him. Without a word, he extended his arms and hugged him. It was a simple gesture, but the warmth of his body, his closeness, soothed Petey's guilt and anguish, even if just for a moment.

Petey trembled slightly at first, not used to so much physical comfort, but then he clung to Dog Man. He buried his face in his chest, feeling the emotions finally begin to settle. The stabbing pain in his chest dulled, and the nausea started to fade, as if Dog Man's embrace had absorbed some of his pain.

—It's okay, Petey —Dog Man said, his voice soft and reassuring—. You don't have to do everything perfectly. You just have to keep going. Your mother knew how you felt. She always knew.

Petey closed his eyes, finally letting the tears fall. No matter how many years had passed, the pain of losing her was still there. But in this embrace, Petey felt something else. Maybe he could forgive himself, even just a little.

—I'm sorry... —he murmured, his voice cracking—. I'm so sorry.

Dog Man gently tightened his hug, not rushing to say anything else, simply giving him space to process his emotions. Petey didn't have to talk, not now. He just needed to be here, letting the pain out, and receiving the comfort of someone who cared for him deeply.

A few moments passed, and the wind no longer felt as cold. Dog Man's presence, his unwavering support, had eased the weight in Petey's chest. Petey lifted his head and looked at his mother's grave.

—I promise I'll never forget you again... —he whispered, staring at Grace's headstone—. I'll always remember you, Mom.

Dog Man smiled gently and gave his shoulder a reassuring squeeze.

—I'll support you in everything, Petey. Always.

Petey nodded, finally feeling a little lighter. He knew that finding peace wouldn't be easy, but with Dog Man by his side, with his steadfast support, he felt like he could do it.

Taking a deep breath, Petey stood up, giving the grave one last look before turning to Dog Man.

—Let's go. It's time to leave —he said with a small smile, though the knot in his chest remained. But for the first time in a long while, he felt like he could move forward.

Dog Man followed without another word, walking beside him, knowing that although the pain would remain, Petey was no longer alone.

Petey had taken the first step, and though the road ahead would still be difficult, he knew he didn't have to walk it alone.

--------------------

Message 6: This is more of a concept, but what if many people, including Dog Man, actually think that Lil Petey is Petey's biological son? Dog Man believes that Petey had a partner in the past. Petey just forgot to mention that LP was actually a clone.

Mini shot:

Petey stirred the cookie dough in the kitchen with mechanical movements, enjoying the silence. But that silence didn't last long.

Dog Man was sitting at the table, watching him intently. Not with his usual goofy tenderness or that look of admiration he got when watching him cook. No, this stare was different.

Something was on his mind.

Petey tried to ignore it, but after several minutes of that silent scrutiny, he lost his patience.

—What?

Greg blinked, as if he had been caught.

—Ah... nothing.

—Uh-huh. Sure. —Petey set the whisk aside and crossed his arms.— I know you, Greg. When you make that face, it means you want to say something but don't know how. So just spit it out.

Dog Man shifted in his seat, scratching the back of his neck.

—Well... I was thinking about Lil Petey.

The cat raised an eyebrow.

—And?

—It's just... you never told me about his other dad.

The whisk slipped from Petey's hands and landed in the bowl with a plop.

—What?

Dog Man looked away, uncomfortable.

—Well, everyone assumes Lil Petey is your son, and... I thought so too. But you never mentioned his other father, so... what happened to him?

Petey blinked, completely baffled.

—Greg, what the hell are you talking about?

Dog Man fidgeted with his fingers.

—Well... if Lil Petey is your son, you must've had a partner before, right?

Petey felt an eye twitch.

—You think I had a partner?

Dog Man nodded slowly, a bit unsure.

The cat sighed and leaned his elbows on the counter.

—Lil Petey is my son, yeah. But technically, he's my clone.

Dog Man blinked several times.

—Clone?

—Yeah. I created him in an experiment.

Greg opened his mouth, but Petey raised a hand.

—Before you ask, no, it wasn't intentional.

Dog Man tilted his head.

—Then... how did it happen?

Petey clicked his tongue.

—It's a long story. But to sum it up, at first, I didn't see him as my son. He was just a clone. Someone I didn't ask for, who appeared out of nowhere and...

He trailed off.

Dog Man waited patiently.

Petey sighed, looking away.

—At first, I didn't want him.

The dog's eyes widened slightly, but he didn't say anything.

—But... the little kid stuck around. And over time, well... —Petey ran a hand over his face, uncomfortable.— I got attached to him. It's impossible not to.

Dog Man tilted his head.

—So... do you see him as your son now?

Petey scoffed.

—Of course. I don't even think of him as a clone anymore.

Dog Man's ears drooped slightly.

—So... was I always the only one?

Petey frowned.

—The only what?

—The only one in your life.

The cat felt a strange tingling in his chest.

—And why does that matter?

Dog Man smiled, now more confident.

—Because I like being the only one.

Heat rushed to Petey's ears.

—Ugh, stop saying cheesy things.

Greg chuckled softly and moved closer, wrapping his arms around him from behind.

—Thanks for telling me.

Petey huffed but didn't pull away.

—If you had asked sooner, you could've avoided the misunderstanding.

Dog Man's ears twitched.

—Yeah... but in my defense, Lil Petey looks a lot like you.

Petey rolled his eyes.

—Trust me, I know that better than anyone.

------------------------

Message 7: In Dav Pilkey's early books, Petey has these little sharp teeth whenever he yells in Super Diaper Baby 2, and I find it pretty adorable. So, what if Lil Petey starts growing fangs because they develop at an early age?

Mini shot:

The house was oddly quiet. Too quiet.

Petey, who was in his lab, narrowed his eyes suspiciously.

—Lil Petey —he called—. If you're up to something, you'd better say it now.

Nothing.

Petey frowned and stepped out of the lab to look for the little one. He didn't have a bad feeling just yet, but when it came to Lil Petey, silence usually meant imminent chaos.

He found him in the bathroom, standing in front of the mirror with an expression somewhere between amazement and excitement.

—What are you doing? —Petey asked, leaning against the doorway.

Lil Petey turned around abruptly, flashing a wide smile and—

Petey blinked.

—... What the hell?

Lil Petey blinked too, confused.

—Dad, look! —he said excitedly, pointing at his mouth—. My teeth are growing!

Petey stepped closer, squinting.

—Let me see. Open your mouth.

Lil Petey obeyed without hesitation, revealing his small feline teeth. Petey felt a slight jolt upon noticing that among them, two sharp fangs were beginning to stand out.

For a moment, he was silent.

Lil Petey closed his mouth and tilted his head.

—What's wrong?

Petey blinked a couple of times before letting out a low, almost incredulous laugh.

—Nothing... It's just... They're just like mine.

Lil Petey's eyes sparkled.

—Really?!

Petey smirked and slightly opened his mouth, revealing his own fangs, which still kept that same sharp shape.

—Yeah, kiddo. Those teeth? You got them from me.

Lil Petey looked at him in awe and excitement.

—Then we're the same!

Petey felt something warm in his chest. It wasn't the first time they noticed similarities between them, but this... this was different. Something that made him feel connected to Lil Petey in a special way.

—I guess so —he murmured, feeling oddly proud.

Lil Petey turned back to the mirror, grinning from ear to ear.

—Maybe they'll grow more, and I can bite things like Dog Man!

Petey scoffed and ruffled his head with one hand.

—Don't even think about it.

Lil Petey let out a mischievous giggle and ran out of the room, leaving Petey alone with his thoughts.

The cat stared at his reflection for a moment longer, observing his own fangs.

Yeah... they were definitely the same.

--------------------

Message 8: Suggestion for Love Ray 2000: Petey uses his old slogan/quote (from previous Dav Pilkey books, not sure which one), but either way, he says, "That's a YP, not an MP." (By the way, "YP" means "your problem," and "MP" means "my problem.")

Mini shot:

Dog Man was sitting at the table, completely focused on a pile of papers spread out in front of him. They were documents from a case he was working on, and the slight furrow in his brow showed how deeply invested he was.

Lil Petey, meanwhile, was on the floor, doodling in his notebook without a single care in the world.

The peaceful moment was shattered when Petey walked into the room, holding a steaming cup of tea in his hand.

—Ugh, nothing like a good cup of tea to— OH RATS!

It all happened in an instant. Lil Petey shifted right as Petey walked past him, causing the cat to stumble. His tail fluffed up, his arms flailed in a desperate attempt to regain balance, and his tea cup went flying in slow motion... straight toward Dog Man's papers.

The hot liquid soaked the documents instantly.

Dog Man blinked.

Petey blinked.

Lil Petey froze on the floor, mouth slightly open.

The silence was brutal.

Petey was the first to react. He slowly straightened up, shook his hands to flick off some of the tea droplets, and, with the utmost calm, said:

—Well... that's a YP, not an MP.

Dog Man frowned in confusion.

—YP?

Petey crossed his arms.

—"Your problem, not my problem."

Lil Petey burst out laughing. Dog Man looked at him, utterly baffled.

—What do you mean your problem?! You spilled the tea!

—Technically, Lil Petey made me trip —Petey pointed at the little kitten with his tail.

Lil Petey covered his mouth with his hands.

—I didn't mean to!

Petey shrugged with a smug smile.

—Well, either way, not my problem.

Dog Man stared at him in disbelief.

—Petey, seriously?

Petey took a sip of what little remained of his tea.

—Dead serious.

Dog Man let his head fall onto the table with a frustrated groan. Meanwhile, Lil Petey was clearly fascinated.

—Dad, that sounded super cool! Can I keep that phrase?

Petey patted his head.

—Of course, kiddo. It's part of your inheritance.

Dog Man let out a dramatic sigh as he tried to salvage what he could of his soaked papers.

---------------------

Message 9: Double Date with Chief x Nurse Lady, Petey x Dog Man. Chief wants to personally celebrate Petey and Dog Man's relationship and gives Petey a gift because he feels awkward or something. Chief literally searched "what do cats like" and ended up giving him catnip or maybe some yarn or something.

Mini shot:

The idea had been Chief's.

—A double date! —he had said enthusiastically—. To celebrate your relationship and have a good time together!

Petey had been about to refuse the moment he heard it, but then Dog Man looked at him with those big, bright eyes and... well, here they were.

The restaurant was nice, with a calm atmosphere and candles on the tables. Nurse Lady seemed delighted with the place, Dog Man was just happy to spend the evening together, and Petey... Petey was trying to ignore the fact that he felt a little out of place.

It didn't help that Chief kept staring at him with an oddly uncomfortable expression.

—What? —Petey finally growled, resting his chin on one hand.

Chief cleared his throat and pulled a paper bag from the seat beside him.

—Well, uh... I know you and Dog Man are together now, and I just... wanted to celebrate that in a special way.

Petey narrowed his eyes suspiciously.

—What are you up to?

—Nothing bad, I swear.

Chief pushed the bag toward him. Petey eyed it cautiously before reaching inside and pulling out...

A ball of yarn.

And a pack of catnip.

Silence.

Petey blinked.

Dog Man tilted his head.

Nurse Lady covered her mouth to stifle a laugh.

Chief shifted in his seat, visibly uncomfortable.

—I... well... I wasn't sure what to get you, so I searched "what do cats like?" and this was the first thing that popped up.

Petey pressed his lips together.

—Are you telling me... you Googled what cats like... and bought me this?

Chief scratched his head.

—...Yeah.

Another silence.

Dog Man looked at Petey, then at Chief, then at the gift... and suddenly let out a choked laugh.

Petey shot him a sharp look, but Dog Man couldn't help it—he was struggling to hold back his laughter.

—This isn't funny! —Petey snapped, though his face had turned slightly red.

—It's a little funny —Nurse Lady added with an amused smile.

—Look, I just thought it'd be a nice gesture —Chief grumbled—. But if you don't want it, I can return it.

Petey stared at the gifts for a moment.

Then, he sighed.

—No, it's fine.

He picked up the ball of yarn, rolling it between his fingers without looking directly at it.

—It's... a nice gesture, I guess.

Chief smiled, relieved.

Dog Man, still grinning, rested his head on Petey's shoulder.

—You could try the catnip later —he said playfully.

Petey elbowed him lightly.

—Don't even dream about it.

-------------------

Message 10: What if Petey wants to hug Dog Man because he's drunk or feeling crazy?

Mini shot:

Petey didn't remember how many drinks he had.

He had gone out alone, just to clear his head. A couple of drinks, nothing serious. But at some point in the night, between the bar's chatter and his own reflection in the glass, the thoughts began creeping into his mind like a plague.

"You look just like him."

That old acquaintance's words echoed in his head. He wasn't sure if they had been said casually or as a warning. Either way, they left him unsettled.

His father.

Petey ran a hand over his face, feeling the warmth of the alcohol clouding his senses. No, he wasn't like him. He never would be.

By the time he got home, he was dizzy. Not enough to collapse, but enough to make the door seem to sway as he tried to unlock it.

—Petey.

Dog Man's voice was the first thing he heard upon entering.

The dog was in the living room, waiting for him with a frown.

—You went out drinking?

—Maybe. —Petey swayed slightly, clumsily pulling off his scarf—. Did you miss me?

Dog Man caught him by the shoulders before he could trip over the rug.

—You're dizzy.

—Damn it... yeah, a little.

Dog Man sighed, still holding him steady.

—You shouldn't drink so much.

—I don't do it often. —Petey lowered his gaze—. I just... needed a distraction.

Dog Man studied him for a moment, as if trying to decipher what lay behind those words.

—Did something happen?

Petey closed his eyes for a moment and shook his head. He didn't want to talk about it.

But in his current state, what he did want was something else.

Without warning, he leaned in and clung to Dog Man, burying his face against his chest.

Dog Man tensed for a second.

—Petey...?

—Just... stay still for a moment —the cat murmured, holding onto him tighter.

Dog Man didn't move. Slowly, his grip became firmer, returning the embrace.

Petey sighed.

Greg's warmth enveloped him, so different from the cold he felt inside.

—I'm not like him —he whispered.

Dog Man lowered his gaze.

—I know.

Petey closed his eyes.

—I don't want to be like him.

—You're not.

A silence settled between them.

Dog Man began to rub his back, with the same patience as always.

—Let's go to bed —he said softly—. We can talk tomorrow if you want.

Petey didn't respond immediately. He just curled up a little closer.

—...Okay.

And for the first time all night, he felt like he could breathe.

---------------

Message 11: I'd love to see Petey get jealous at least one...

Mini-shot:

Petey wasn't the jealous type.

Sure, he could be territorial about his lab, his inventions, and his morning coffee, but when it came to people... No, that was ridiculous.

Or at least, that's what he thought. Until today.

—Ohh, good boy! You're so strong!

Petey narrowed his eyes.

Dog Man was on the other side of the park, helping a new officer lift some heavy boxes from a patrol car. The woman beamed at him, patting his arm as if she were impressed.

And Dog Man, with that stupid wagging tail of his, just laughed.

Petey clicked his tongue, crossing his arms.

Not his problem. Dog Man could talk to whoever he wanted.

—Something wrong, Dad?

Petey flinched slightly.

Lil Petey was looking at him curiously.

—Nothing.

—But you have a weird face.

—I do not have a weird face.

Lil Petey tilted his head and then glanced toward Dog Man.

—Ohhh. Are you jealous?

Something in Petey's pride cracked.

—WHAT?! Of course not!

—Yes, you are.

—No, I'm not.

—You're frowning and staring at Dog Man a lot.

Petey rolled his eyes, turning his back.

—I don't care who Greg talks to.

—But you're not even eating your ice cream anymore...

Petey looked down. His vanilla ice cream was starting to melt in his hand.

—Tsk.

Lil Petey giggled, but before he could say anything else, Dog Man returned, dusting off his hands.

—All done! he said with his usual enthusiasm. Shall we go?

Petey shrugged.

—Whatever.

Greg tilted his head, noticing his dry tone.

—Are you okay?

—Yes.

—Are you sure?

—Yes.

—You seem mad.

—I'm not.

—Mmm.

Dog Man thought for a moment and then, without warning, leaned in and licked his cheek.

—WHAT THE HELL, GREG?!

—Now you definitely look mad!

Lil Petey burst into laughter.

Petey growled, wiping his face.

—You're an idiot.

Dog Man smiled with his absurd innocence and wrapped an arm around Petey, pulling him along as they walked.

Petey sighed but didn't pull away.

Maybe... he was a little jealous.

But he would never admit it.

Message 12: Yohan, you're amazing at writing! What if, in LR2000, Lil Petey tries to set up a date between Petey and Dog Man, and when it finally happens, Sarah Hatoff sees them together and interviews them because she thinks Petey's reason for being a (former) villain was to chase Dog Man romantically? You get me?

Message 12: Yohan, you're amazing at writing! What if, in LR2000, Lil Petey tries to set up a date between Petey and Dog Man, and when it finally happens, Sarah Hatoff sees them together and interviews them because she thinks Petey's reason for being a (former) villain was to chase Dog Man romantically? iykwim?

Mini-shot:

—Come on, Dad, pleaaase!

Lil Petey clasped his little paws together in a pleading gesture, his tail wagging excitedly.

—No.

—Just one date with Dog Man!

—No.

—But you guys are already dating!

—Precisely why I don't need you forcing me to go on a date.

Lil Petey puffed out his cheeks.

—But you never go out together!

Petey rolled his eyes.

—We live together, that counts.

—It's not the same!

Petey sighed.

If there was one thing his son had—besides boundless energy—it was ridiculous persistence. And if he let him keep pushing, he wouldn't have peace all day.

—Fine, fine, I'll do it!

—YES!

Lil Petey jumped for joy before running off to tell Dog Man.

Petey sighed again.

He couldn't believe he'd fallen for this.

Going out with Greg wasn't unpleasant. In fact, Dog Man always made sure everything felt relaxed and easy. They went to a small restaurant, then took a walk in the park. Petey was actually starting to feel comfortable... until everything got ruined.

—Oh my DOG, I can't believe this!

The voice was unmistakable.

Petey felt a chill.

Dog Man turned his head curiously.

—Sarah?

—This is a scoop! —Sarah Hatoff was already pulling out her recorder and notebook.— Petey, the most wanted ex-villain, and Dog Man, the city's hero, on a romantic date!

Petey's eye twitched.

—We're not looking for attention, so—

—And to think that your secret reason for being a villain was love!

—What?

—I knew it! —Sarah pointed her recorder at him.— Confess! How long have you been in love with Dog Man? Were your crimes an attempt to get his attention? Was it all a master plan to seduce him?

Petey felt his blood boil.

—WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?!

Sarah grinned like she had just caught a criminal red-handed.

—Oh, a classic case of 'from enemies to lovers!'

Dog Man, meanwhile, tilted his head thoughtfully.

—So... you did like me before?

Petey shot him a deadly glare.

—Greg, don't play along with this!

Sarah wasn't letting up.

—And now you live together, how romantic! Can you tell us about the moment you finally realized you loved Dog Man?

—NO!

Sarah just jotted something down.

—Can you confirm if it was love at first sight?

—NO!

—So it was a love that blossomed over time?

—NEITHER!

—Then what's the story?

Petey gritted his teeth.

—The story is you leaving us alone.

Sarah smiled, ignoring him completely.

—Who confessed first?

—Nobody.

—Did you kiss on your first date?

Dog Man started wagging his tail, but noticing Petey's furious stare, he tried to play it off.

—Who's more affectionate?

Petey clicked his tongue.

—Greg, let's get out of here before she makes a documentary!

Sarah didn't even blink.

—Who's more jealous?

—For DOG'S SAKE, WOMAN, ENOUGH!

—It's just information for the people! —Sarah insisted, following them with her recorder.— The public wants to know if you sleep together or if Petey snores!

Dog Man, who had been secretly enjoying the chaos, felt his ears turn red.

—Uhh...

Petey growled.

—THAT'S NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS!

Sarah kept writing.

—So he does snore?

—WE'RE LEAVING!

He grabbed Dog Man's wrist and stormed off.

Sarah just grinned.

—This is going to be the best story of the month!

Dog Man, still a bit flustered, glanced at Petey as they walked away.

—So... do you snore?

Petey stopped dead in his tracks.

—Greg...

—Yes?

—You're sleeping on the couch for a week.

Dog Man whimpered.

This was definitely not part of the plan.

Message 14: GASP! I came up with another idea, okok, what if Grace was actually friends with Knight and they took a photo together when they were young, but Grandpa tore it in half accusing Grace of wasting time with friends? But Grace gave one half of the photo to young Petey and Knight gave the other half to Greg. In the present, Dog Man only has one half of the photo and Petey recognizes the background and says, —Where did you get that?— and Dog Man responds that Knight gave it to him. Then Petey gets the half that Grace gave him, and they piece the photo together to see the full image.

Mini shot:

Dog Man was sitting at the table, flipping through some papers from a recent case while Lil Petey played on the floor with some blocks. Petey, for his part, was reviewing some notes on his computer when the sound of crumpled paper caught his attention.

—What do you have there?— he asked without much interest, glancing at Dog Man.

Greg raised his head and wagged his tail.

—A photo.

Petey frowned when Dog Man pulled out a worn piece of photograph. It was torn in half, leaving only the blurry image of a person in a background that, though familiar, didn't quite fit in his memory.

—Where did you get that?—

Dog Man tilted his head.

—Knight gave it to me a long time ago.

Petey's heart skipped a beat.

—Knight...?— He immediately stepped closer, snatching the piece of photo from Dog Man's hands. —Wait a second!—

Greg blinked, surprised by his reaction.

Petey studied the background of the image more closely. He recognized it. He knew exactly what that place was.

But what took his breath away the most was that he had the other half.

He rushed to his desk, opened a drawer, and rummaged through his things until he pulled out a piece of photo he had kept since childhood.

The image was yellowed, but still clear.

He returned to Dog Man and held his piece next to his.

The tear matched perfectly.

Together, the pieces revealed the full photo.

Petey froze.

It was an image of two people: his mother, Grace, smiling warmly, and next to her, Knight.

—...It can't be. —

—Oh!— Dog Man wagged his tail excitedly. —It fits!—

Petey barely heard him.

It wasn't just the image that shocked him, but the memories that came with it.

He remembered the day Grandpa had snatched the photo and torn it in front of him, telling him his mother was wasting time with "nonsense like friendship."

—You don't need any of that, Petey. People can't be trusted. —

But Grace... she didn't think the same.

She had secretly given him that piece of photo.

—Don't forget that there are good people, little one. One day you'll understand. —

Petey swallowed hard.

And now...

Now he saw the other half.

—...She was friends with Knight,— he murmured, almost in a whisper.

Dog Man nodded.

—Knight said she was a good person. —

Petey felt something stir in his chest.

All this time... he had kept that half without knowing someone else had the other.

That Greg had it.

Dog Man smiled, wagging his tail softly.

—Now the photo is complete. —

Petey looked at the image again.

His mother and Greg's mentor.

Two people who marked them in the past.

For some reason, the idea that their paths had always been meant to cross made a strange warmth spread through his chest.

He sighed and gave Dog Man a light tap on the shoulder.

—I guess this means something, huh?—

Greg smiled widely.

—Yeah. —

Petey looked at the photo one last time before giving a faint smile.

Message 15: Petey forgets to secure something on a shelf, and the object almost cuts Lil Petey's tail, but Petey saves his son. After that, Petey stays in his room, traumatized by past events and doubting himself to care for Lil Petey, so Dog Man has to go upstairs and comfort him.

Mini shot:

The accident happened in a matter of seconds.

Petey was in his lab, adjusting some devices on one of the higher shelves. It wasn't the first time he had placed things there without securing them properly. Nothing had ever happened... until today.

Lil Petey, as curious as ever, had gotten too close at the wrong moment.

The sound of the object slipping and falling was like a shot in the room.

Petey's body moved before his brain could process it.

He lunged for his son and pushed him out of the way just in time.

The metal hit the floor with a deafening crash.

For a moment, everything was silent.

—P-Papa...!— Lil Petey's trembling voice broke the stillness.

Petey, still holding him tightly, felt his own heart pounding in his chest.

He pulled back slightly to check his son. He wasn't hurt. Just scared.

But when his eyes dropped to his little trembling tail, his stomach churned.

If he had reacted just a second later...

If he hadn't been paying attention...

The image of Lil Petey's tail hurt, of his son hurt because of his carelessness, struck his mind like a poisoned needle.

—P-Papa... are you okay?—

Petey didn't answer. He just hugged him tighter.

.

.

.

That night, Petey didn't come down for dinner.

He didn't even leave his room.

Dog Man noticed the absence immediately. Lil Petey had tried calling him a couple of times from the hallway, but the door remained shut.

When the little one finally fell asleep, Dog Man decided to go upstairs.

The door wasn't locked.

Upon entering, he found Petey sitting on the floor, his back leaning against the bed and his ears lowered.

He didn't look angry.

He looked... broken.

Dog Man gently closed the door.

—Petey...—

The cat didn't lift his gaze.

—I shouldn't be taking care of him,— he murmured.

Dog Man tilted his head.

—What?—

—Lil Petey.— Petey clenched his fists. —I'm not someone you can trust. —

Dog Man frowned and approached.

—That's not true. —

—Yes, it is,— Petey insisted with a bitter laugh. —Today, I almost... almost hurt him. —

Dog Man sat next to him, watching him carefully.

—But you didn't. —

Petey shook his head.

—Because I got lucky. But... what if I hadn't?— He ran a hand over his face. —I'm not like you, Greg. I'm not a hero. I wasn't even a good father at first. —

Dog Man lowered his ears.

—But you are now. —

Petey remained silent.

—you cared for him, protected him, and now... now you care so much that you can't forgive yourself for an accident. —

Petey looked away.

—I don't want to lose him. —

Dog Man placed a hand on his back.

—you won't. —

A heavy silence fell between them.

Dog Man stayed there, not pressing.

Finally, after a long sigh, Petey leaned slightly, resting his head on Greg's shoulder.

—I hate when you're right. —

Dog Man smiled and put an arm around him.

—Then you're going to hate me a lot. —

Petey let out a tired sigh, but didn't pull away.

-----------------

Message 16: Dogman forgets to tell Petey that he's working late, so Petey thinks Dogman has left him. Petey goes to bed by himself and has a nightmare/flashback from when he was younger, having dinner with his parents. Grandpa spills Petey's glass of water and it breaks... on the floor, and (young) Petey apologizes profusely as he picks up the glass shards. Grace knows it's not Petey's fault and scolds Petey's dad, but Petey's dad throws a tantrum. Petey wakes up from the nightmare and goes to the kitchen by himself. Dogman still hasn't returned, but Lil Petey is sleeping upstairs since it's nighttime. Petey is trying to deal with his abandonment trauma (in whatever way the author wishes) but eventually, Dogman returns from his long workday, and Petey starts being excessively affectionate, telling him not to leave before Dogman can explain that (Dogman) had to work late because of a court case he needed to attend. But anyway, it's an idea of distress/affection.

Mini shot:

Petey woke up with a knot in his stomach.

For a moment, he didn't know why. He just felt the cold of the empty mattress beside him, the absence of the warm body that used to be there.

He blinked in the dark.

Ah.

Dog Man wasn't there.

Petey looked at the clock on the nightstand. It was late. Very late.

He hadn't received any messages, no notes.

Had he abandoned him?

The thought hit him harder than it should have.

No. That didn't make sense. Greg wasn't like that. If he had wanted to break up with him, he wouldn't have done it this way... or would he?

Petey closed his eyes.

Don't think about it.

But his body didn't listen to him. His mind didn't either.

Suddenly, he was no longer in his room.

.

The glass of water fell and shattered on the floor.

Petey barely had time to react before his father's voice boomed in the room.

—Look what you did!

—S-sorry —he stammered, looking down as he hurried to pick up the glass shards.

—Always ruining everything! You can't do anything right!

—It wasn't his fault —Grace's voice cut through the air like a knife.

Petey stopped.

His mother never raised her voice.

Never.

Grandpa looked at her, his expression dark and furious.

—Pardon?

—You knocked over the glass —Grace said, with a dangerous calm—. Not him.

Grandpa clenched his fists.

—You're always defending him! That's why he's a useless brat! He can't do anything for himself!

Petey felt the glass cutting into his fingers. He didn't let go.

No.

It wasn't anyone's fault but his.

If only he'd been more careful.

If only he'd paid more attention.

If only he wasn't always... ruining everything.

.

He woke up with a start.

For a second, the sound of the shouting still echoed in his ears.

His breathing was frantic.

His heart, a frantic drum in his chest.

Petey ran a hand over his face.

He couldn't go back to sleep.

With a tired sigh, he got up and left the room.

.

.

The kitchen was silent.

Petey leaned against the counter and closed his eyes, exhaling slowly.

It was stupid to feel like this.

It was stupid to let a memory from so many years ago still affect him.

But he couldn't help it.

The fear of being left behind.

Of not being enough.

Of Greg realizing one day that he wasn't worth it.

Petey gritted his teeth and shook his head.

No.

He wasn't going to think about it.

He wasn't going to...

The front door opened.

Petey tensed and raised his head just as Dog Man entered, shaking the snow off his fur.

—Ah, finally home... —Greg sighed, stretching his arms. But he stopped when he noticed Petey's figure in the kitchen—. Huh? You're still awake?

Petey stared at him.

And, before Greg could react, he hugged him.

Tightly.

So tightly that it almost knocked him to the floor.

Dog Man blinked, surprised.

—Petey?

—Don't leave.

The cat's voice was barely a whisper against his chest.

Dog Man felt Petey's claws gripping his coat.

—Don't leave me.

Greg felt a slight shiver run down his back.

Was Petey... shaking?

The dog immediately responded, hugging him back, wrapping him in his warmth.

—I didn't leave —he whispered—. I just had to work late.

Petey didn't say anything.

He just buried himself deeper into the embrace.

—I'm sorry —Greg continued—. I should've let you know. There was a case, and I had to be in court.

Petey still didn't speak.

Dog Man gently rubbed his back.

—Did you have a nightmare?

The silence was answer enough.

Greg held him a little tighter.

—I'm here.

Petey exhaled slowly.

—Idiot.

—I know.

—I hate you.

—I know.

—Don't do that again.

Dog Man lovingly petted his head.

—I promise.

And Petey, with his face still hidden against Greg's chest, finally let out a sigh.

Message 17: 💡: Petey has to go to the hospital for a checkup. But he doesn't like visiting the hospital because his mom was sick, and she couldn't heal.

Mini shot:

Petey was sitting in the hospital waiting room, arms crossed, his tail moving impatiently.

—This is a waste of time —he muttered, not looking at Dog Man, who was sitting next to him.

The dog tilted his head.

—It's just a checkup.

—Exactly. An unnecessary checkup. I'm fine.

Dog Man didn't say anything, just gave him a look that said, "Don't make me remind you about the last time you almost passed out for not going to the doctor."

Petey huffed and looked away.

The hospital smelled of disinfectant. Of medicine. Of memories.

He closed his eyes and clenched his fists in his lap.

He hated this place.

Not because he was afraid of needles or doctors, but because...

Because the last time he was in a hospital, his mother never came out of it.

.

He was a kid the last time he saw her.

Grace was lying in the hospital bed, tubes connected to her arms, and machines beeping around her.

—Hi, sweetheart... —her voice was soft, tired.

Petey climbed onto the chair next to her and took her hand with both paws.

—I built a robot today —he said proudly, trying to ignore the fear in his chest—. It's an upgraded model. Much more durable.

Grace smiled faintly.

—That's amazing, sweetie... I knew you'd be a genius.

Petey felt a lump in his throat.

—When you get out of here, I'll show it to you.

His mother gently patted his head.

—Of course, you will.

But she never came out.

And Petey never got to show her his robot.

.

—Mr. Petey.

The nurse's call snapped him out of his thoughts.

He blinked and stood up stiffly.

Dog Man looked at him with concern.

—Do you want me to go with you?

—I'm not a kid —he automatically replied.

Dog Man didn't insist, but his tail stopped moving.

Petey sighed.

—...I'll see you in a bit.

Greg smiled slightly and gave him a gentle nudge on the shoulder, as if reminding him he was there.

And Petey, although still feeling that knot in his chest, took a deep breath and followed the nurse.

Message 18: Petey's distress/affection at the end: Petey feels like Lil Petey prefers Dog Man as his father because DM and LP always play together, and Petey remembers abandoning LP a long time ago + LP wants to live with DM. DM/LP notice Petey's sad behavior ♡(ӦvӦ。) We love you, Yohan!

HEHE TYSMMM

Mini shot:

Petey was lying in bed, staring at the ceiling in the darkness of his room. The silence of the house enveloped him, and the absence of Lil Petey felt like a painful emptiness. The little one was at Molly's house, playing and enjoying the day, while he stayed alone, trapped in his thoughts.

—What am I doing wrong? —he wondered, his fingers playing with the sheets. —Why do I feel like I'm no longer enough for him? —The image of Lil Petey and Dog Man playing together kept spinning in his mind, his son's laughter echoing in his ears, even though he was miles away.

He remembered all the times he had distanced himself from his son, the times he had let the pain consume him, and how Lil Petey had grown while he remained stuck in his own fears and mistakes. Can I really be the father he needs?

Petey sighed, turned on his side, and squeezed his eyes shut, trying to drown out those thoughts. The guilt was consuming him, and the feeling of being invisible to his son was torturing him.

At that moment, he heard footsteps approaching his door. Dog Man entered quietly, as he always did, with his calm and comforting presence. Although he didn't want to admit it, the dog was one of the few things that still managed to calm his restless mind.

—Is everything okay? —Dog Man asked, gently leaning on the doorframe. Petey didn't answer immediately, his gaze still fixed on the ceiling.

—Aren't you playing with Lil Petey? —he said, his voice soft.

Dog Man frowned, realizing something was wrong. He knew Petey had been more distant lately, but something about his attitude had alerted him even more.

—Lil Petey is at Molly's house, playing... —Petey murmured, without taking his eyes off the ceiling. —Don't worry about it.

Dog Man approached the bed and sat beside him, watching Petey with concern. He didn't need to ask, as he could read his companion like an open book, but he still did.

—What's going on, Petey? —he asked softly.

Petey stayed silent for a moment, searching for the words. He wanted to say something, but shame and pain kept him trapped. Finally, he sighed and let out a bitter laugh.

—It's stupid, Greg. I don't know what's wrong with me. —His voice cracked slightly. —I just... feel like Lil Petey doesn't need me anymore. They're so good together, and... —He couldn't continue.

Dog Man looked at him intently, his expression calm but full of understanding. He moved closer, not taking his eyes off him.

—Don't say that. —Dog Man said, taking his hand. —Lil Petey needs you. Sometimes, he needs more from you than you think. You're his father, Petey. Don't forget that.

Petey closed his eyes for a moment, trying to hold back the tears that threatened to spill. The guilt was consuming him, but Dog Man's words gave him a small comfort. Dog Man continued to gently stroke his hand, as if his touch could ease the heavy doubts tormenting him.

—And what about you? —he whispered, his voice barely audible. —Don't you see how he looks at you? Like you're the only one who really understands him...

Dog Man looked at him seriously, understanding what he meant. He knew his relationship with Lil Petey was special, but he also knew that Petey's relationship with his son couldn't be replaced.

—It's not about me, Petey. —he said calmly. —It's about what you are to him. And what you are is enough.

Petey let out a small, broken laugh, not fully believing what he was hearing.

—I don't know... —he murmured, feeling like the weight of the world was still on his shoulders.

Dog Man gently stroked his hair, trying to convey calm with each gesture.

—You know it. —he said firmly. —A father's love isn't measured by what you do at a specific moment. It's measured by what you are to him all the time. And you're more than enough, Petey.

Petey looked at him, searching for an answer in his eyes. Finally, he felt a little lighter, though still with doubts.

—Thanks, Greg... —he whispered, feeling a bit relieved but still needing time to process everything.

Dog Man smiled, knowing that Petey wouldn't admit it immediately, but he trusted that eventually, he would find the peace he needed.

—You don't have to thank me. I'm here whenever you need me.

Petey finally smiled, though in a small way. He felt like something inside him was breaking, and although the guilt was still there, for the first time in a long time, he wasn't alone in his pain.

—I guess everything will be fine. —he murmured, turning to look at Dog Man. —Thanks for being here.

Dog Man nodded and stood up, giving him one last glance before heading toward the door.

—Always, Petey. Always.

Petey watched him for a moment longer, and before he left, he reached out his hand toward him, seeking one last touch. Dog Man, with a calm smile, sat back down beside him and ran his hand through his hair one more time.

—Everything's going to be okay.

Petey nodded, feeling a little more at peace with what he had heard.

Message 18: Hi!!! I've always liked seeing fanarts of Petey wearing DogMan's hat! What if DogMan got sick and Petey had to go to work for him because Chief had an emergency but needed as many cops as possible?

Mini shot:

Dog Man was lying on the couch, shivering with a fever, his face red and eyes glassy. He had spent the whole day in bed, and although he tried to rest, the illness had completely weakened him. Petey was in the kitchen, preparing some soup for his boyfriend, but the peace of the afternoon was broken when the phone rang.

—Petey! —Chief's voice resonated through the speaker, urgent—. I need you to bring Dog Man to work right now! There's an emergency, and we need all the officers we can get. Come on, move it!

Petey looked at Dog Man, who was lying down, clearly too weak to move.

—How do you expect me to bring him if he's completely sick? —Petey responded, somewhat annoyed.

—I don't care! Do whatever it takes! —Chief hung up immediately, without waiting for a response.

.

.

With Dog Man's police uniform in hand, Petey began putting on the clothes. He didn't understand how being a police officer could be so complicated, but he was determined to show Chief that he could do it.

A few minutes later, Petey was at the police station, with Dog Man's hat slightly crooked on his head and a uniform that was a bit too big. Chief saw him arrive and, after a quick glance, couldn't help but frown.

—Petey? Where's Dog Man? —he asked, a bit confused.

—He's sick, but... I came to replace him —Petey replied, with a forced smile.

Chief looked at him, visibly annoyed, but the situation was critical.

—Well... it's not ideal, but we need more officers. You have to go to a bank robbery. Go and solve this quickly, understand? —he said, handing him a map and an order.

Petey nodded and dashed out. "This is going to be easy," he thought to himself as he walked quickly toward the bank.

When he arrived, Petey realized things weren't as simple as he had thought. Just a few minutes into the chase, the robber managed to escape, and Petey nearly lost the trail. He ran, jumped, and used all his strength to follow the criminal. Eventually, he managed to catch him, but not without collapsing from exhaustion.

When he returned home, exhausted and covered in sweat, he found Dog Man resting on the couch.

—Petey... are you okay? —Dog Man asked, raising an eyebrow at the sight of him.

—Don't talk to me! —Petey replied, still panting—. This job is harder than I thought.

Dog Man, with a weak smile, looked at him and propped himself up a little, despite his fever.

—You look... cute, the uniform suits you —Dog Man said, his voice hoarse but full of affection.

Petey dropped down onto the couch beside him, exhaling tiredly. At first, he felt a little annoyed, but he couldn't help but smile. Even though he'd had a tough day, Dog Man's words made him feel better.

—I'm never doing this again —Petey murmured, resting on Dog Man and closing his eyes.

—I understand, but you did great, I'm sure of it —Dog Man replied, gently hugging him.

Petey smiled, letting the calm of his boyfriend envelop him as he rested beside him. Although the day had been much harder than he expected, just being with Dog Man made everything a little more bearable.
