Chapter 156
One Night Surprise Novel
Chapter 156 Even A Good Choice Might Not Bring Results When Alexander mentioned âinsignificant peopleâ, Courtney felt her heart lurch for an inexplicable reason. She suddenly remembered that she used to be an insignificant person to him just a few months ago. Similarly, Jordan had also been an insignificant person to him six years ago. To him, those he deemed insignificant had no impact on his life, whether they existed or not. As those thoughts went through her head, a small chill began to spread in her heart and gradually seeped into her bones.
The next day, Courtney was stopped by the receptionist as soon as she arrived at the hotel entrance. âMiss Hunter, somebody is looking for you.â
The moment she heard those words, she noticed a familiar figure in the public lounge area of the lobby. Thus, she hurriedly nodded at the receptionist and walked over there. Her visitor turned out to be Scottâs personal butler, Harry Zimmer. He was smartly dressed in a suit. Despite being over 60 years old, he was still full of energyâjust like Scott himself. âMr. Harry, why are you here?â
Harry smiled when he saw her. âItâs nothing. I brought you the information you requested, Mrs. Duncan.â He handed the brown paper bag in his hands to her. Lowering his voice, he said, âItâs just that many nannies were dismissed during that period. So, it will probably take a lot of effort to pinpoint the suspects from among them.â
âNo problem. At least we have a direction to work in.â She quickly took the bag from him. âMr. Harry, why donât you come up to my office? Iââ
âItâs okay. Old Master Duncan told me to deliver this to you. Iâll be leaving now that Iâve delivered it.â After saying that, he smoothened out the wrinkles on his suit and left the hotel.
Holding the brown paper bag, Courtney prepared to enter the elevator when Penelope leaned out from behind the front desk and called out to her out of curiosity. âMiss Hunter, that was the Duncan Familyâs butler, right? Why did he come looking for you?â
âTo deliver something.â Courtney waved the brown paper bag in her hands and dismissed Penelope with a few words. âFocus on your work and wear your nametag properly.â
âOh... Yes.â Penelope immediately stood up straight and lowered her head to straighten the nametag on her chest. When she lifted her head again, Courtney was already far away in the distance.
âWhat a silly question,â one of the ladies nearby chuckled. âI overheard them just now. The Duncan Familyâs butler addressed Miss Hunter as âMrs. Duncanâ! Iâm certain Miss Hunter must have married President Duncan by now.â
âThatâs right. I think weâll soon have a grand wedding at our hotel.â
In the office, Courtney called Oliver over through the phone. âThis is the information Mr. Harry just handed to me. Iâm keeping the original. This is a copy of it. See if you still need anything.â
âNope.â Oliver flipped through it quickly and replied seriously. âLater, Iâll return to my room and organize this information. Iâll see where these nanniesâ hometowns are and check their bank accounts. If nothing unexpected happens, I should be able to leave in three days to look for the person.â
âGood.â She seemed a little worried as she said, âCome to me if there are any problems.â
âDonât worry; Itâs just a search for a person. The only issue is that it takes up a lot of time. But, itâs just the right thing for somebody like me to do since I have so much free time.â He tilted his head to the side. His gaze was innocent and naïve.
âThen, Iâll leave it to you.â She smiled, then she recalled the message she received from Cameron before leaving the house this morning. âBy the way, why donât you come over to my house for hotpot tonight? I havenât had the chance to thank you for your help with the filming at the hotel last time.â
Hesitating for several seconds, he asked, âWill Alexander be joining?â
âI havenât told him about it. Iâm not sure if he has the time.â
âOkay. Iâll go.â He nodded happily and waved with the information in his hands slightly. âIâll get to work then.â
âAlright, thanks.â Watching Oliver leave, Courtney suddenly felt relieved. It felt as if her own child had grown up into an adult that could help her with her work.
âMr. Langley, this is the latest product in our shop. It was designed by a famous designer.â Inside a jewelry shop, the female store manager personally carried out a box of rings to recommend. She was smiling so widely that her teeth were showing.
Gale swept a glance across the row of diamond rings on the table. Just looking at them made his eyes hurt. Then, he turned around and asked, âWhat do you think?â
Alexander was sitting next to him, leisurely drinking a cup of tea. When he heard the question, he didnât even bother lifting his head. âTheyâre okay.â
âRight?!â Gale immediately frowned and said unhappily, âAside from the size difference, they are practically all the same! What design are you talking about? This is the oldest trick in the book! Who are you trying to fool?!â
The store manager wiped away her cold sweat and stubbornly explained, âMr. Langley, we can customize it if you have the time.
But, didnât you say you wanted a finished product? Most finished products are of similar styles. They wonât differ too much except for the size of the diamonds.â
âThatâs enough.â Gale irritably waved his hand in dismissal and looked at Alexander. âAlex, Iâm not trying to criticize you. But, how could you bring me here if you thought their products were mediocre?! Donât you know how picky Cameron can be? Did you think she was as easygoing as Courtney? If I donât pick the ring well, I wonât have a chance with the proposal at all.â
âEven if you choose well, you might not have results.â Alexander glanced at him with a lukewarm gaze. âI advise you to be more cautious about when you plan to propose. Otherwise, it will backfire on you.â
âDo you think Iâm joking? A real man would never drag things out,â Gale said. âI told her Iâm going to marry her, so Iâm going to marry her.â
Alexander couldnât be bothered to argue with him on something as stupid as that. Sweeping his gaze over the diamond rings in front of him, he explained, âThis shop does not specialize in finished products. I advise you to wait for a while. On one hand, youâll be able to calm down. On the other hand, it takes time to customize a diamond ring. Just choose a loose diamond for now.â
While he was speaking, he shot the store manager a look. The store manager immediately understood his signal and arranged for her staff to bring the loose diamonds out of the safe in the warehouse.
âWill it be done in time?â Gale looked suspicious.
Alexander placed his teacup down and reminded Gale, âI think you should be more worried about whether Cameron ever considered marrying you in the first place. Donât forget; you have not gotten back together again since you last broke up.â
âThatâs because she doesnât think Iâm being serious with her. Thatâs also why she refuses to take me seriously,â Gale said with a straight face. âNow that I have a diamond ring in hand, Iâll see what else she has to say.â
Looking at Galeâs confident expression, a touch of worry flitted across Alexanderâs eyes. Gale had been a playboy since he was young. He was used to fooling around, visiting all the nightclubs and bars in Melrose City since he was fifteen. Moreover, he had countless young ladies hanging around him. Even if an unknown woman stepped up and claimed that her child was his, it wouldnât come as a surprise. A person like that was used to fooling around when it came to emotional matters. Therefore, nobody believed him when he was finally serious about it.
Besides, no girl wishing for a stable life would marry him. This issue wasnât something that could be solved by buying a diamond ring or two, especially not with Cameronâs stubborn and unyielding temperament. Iâm afraid Gale is going to hit a huge stumbling block this time... Just as Alexander was mulling about it, the store manager brought out the loose diamonds. Scattered on a black flannel cloth were loose diamonds of all shapes and sizes. Their workmanship was beautiful, and the light shining on them set off a bright sparkle.
