Chapter 60
Lunar Whispers
Anthony rested a gentle hand on Scott's shoulder when he looked a little worried.
"Now, I don't want tension between us, I was lost for years when my parents died and at first, I blamed the man who crashed into them but I also praised him. He saved my son but killed my parents. There was an investigation put into it because I demanded it," Anthony sometimes hated talking about it. There was not a day that went by when he didn't think about his mum and dad. "There was oil on the road and nobody had reported it. All your dad had to do was simply break and he'd lose control. Which is exactly what he did. The person who spilt the oil and didn't report it got fined and that was that."
His parents were gone in a blink of an eye and he could do nothing about it. His son was broken but at least he was living and able to be patched up from that dark day.
"I can't believe it," Scott glanced over to his boys. They were so sad when their grandad died, he was the one grandparent who Jacob loved because he was fully accepted by him, unlike Grace's parents. "What a crazy coincidence."
"I know," Anthony sighed and watched his wife. He was telling her in his head what they were talking about. "These things happen more than you think. I'm sorry that your father died to save mine."
"And I'm sorry that your parents died due to mine." Scott never thought he'd be talking about his father like this. "But I am glad he saved your son. He has been a blessing in our lives."
"He can be difficult at times but I love him more than anything in the world. I hope one day he can find peace with what happened. He really beats himself up about it."
"Poor thing. I'm sure if he told Jacob about it, he would be extremely supportive."
Hunter sat a few feet away from the pool and crossed his legs. He didn't like seeing Jacob close but he needed to pull himself together. It wasn't like he was alone and helpless. People are here who could help if anything did happen.
"This water is so nice. I hope the weather stays like this all week." Sam lowered himself into it and swam over to his Alpha who was sitting at the other side.
"It won't," Jacob mumbled, unintentionally.
"Can you tell with your powers?" Sam asked. It was obvious that Hunter was tense and jumpy, he always has been when around water.
Jacob simply nodded.
"I don't know how." He shrugged, not really understanding his capabilities yet.
"So what's the weather forecast?" Sam chuckled but his eyes were sympathetic. He understood that something drastic has happened in his Alpha's life to make him hate water so much.
"Um, storms all week."
"Yeah, okay then lightning keeper," Sam spoke with sarcasm and flicked some water at Hunter who turned when the back door opened and Scott walked out with Nathan. He was followed by his wife Kayla and their son Vic.
Hunter silently sighed and turned back to his mate with dull eyes. He didn't want to see his one true enemy today and try to be friends. It was going to be uncomfortable.
"Don't be difficult with him. If he's being nice, be nice too," After spending every day with Hunter, Jacob understood that if he didn't like a situation or a person, he wasn't exactly cooperative and easy to get on with. Hunter was a little dramatic and sometimes did things that suited him, not others.
That was all part of being dominant and a high ranked Alpha.
"Fine," Hunter muttered. He would do anything for his mate and if that means being civil with Vic, the Alpha of the filthy rat pack, then so be it.
Scott watched Nathan greet Anthony, Margo and Flora. He had a lot of questions but before he could maybe suggest talking inside, He, Kayla and Vic dropped to one knee when Jacob stood up.
"It's an honour," Nathan spoke and bowed his head. "Your howl last night was so powerful."
William raised his eyebrows. His brother really was royalty of the wolves. But Jacob stood and started to fidget. He really didn't like getting bowed to, however, he had not quite grasped how important he is.
"You don't have to do that Nathan, you're family," Scott said. He was still a bit shaken up after finding out about his dad and Anthony's parents. Poor Hunter for going through such a traumatic experience. Although now was not the time to dwell on it, he had to know more about his wife and her big secret. "Let's talk inside so this doesn't fall on unauthorised ears."
Nathan and his family stood up. They have always been big believers of the Gods and they never thought they'd ever be related to one.
Hunter subconsciously pulled Jacob away from the side of the pool as everyone made their way into the living room. They filled up the small but chunky couches while some people had to sit on cushions on the floor. Scott's home wasn't big but it was the perfect size for his family.
"Right, this has been playing on my mind for ages now," Scott sighed and watched Nathan. "Just start from the beginning, I need to know everything."
Vic chose to sit next to Hunter who earned death glares from Sam, his jealous Beta wolf. Hunter was visibly agitated while Jacob's profound aura overwhelmingly floated around the room. If someone didn't know he was a God, they would surely feel it.
"Okay, it'll be easier if I'm not interrupted," Nathan could feel his wife's hand strongly intertwined with his, giving him the courage to speak in front of so many judging eyes. He and Anthony are friends but stayed away because their son's hated each other. It was very odd that they were here because Hunter's mate is related to him. It's strikingly unusual how people are brought together in this world.
He took a breath and wondered where to begin.
"So, when I was eighteen, I was bonded with Kayla. I had no idea that wolves existed and much like Jacob, I was shocked, confused and I felt a little cheated. I had grown up believing that only humans and animals lived on this earth. It took me a long time to get my head around it so I turned to Grace. Kayla and her family gave me permission to tell her so I did. She didn't believe me so we showed her. I was hoping for support and someone who I could talk to who was still human but Grace very quickly rejected me. I was quite offended because she said that it wasn't normal, I wasn't normal and didn't deserve to be part of her life. My parents didn't like Kayla so I quickly lost my family." Nathan had been so desperate to say all of this for years. "When William was born, I tried to be involved but Grace rejected me again and threatened to turn to the authorities about werewolves and out our secret. I couldn't be responsible for that so I kept my distance. When Jacob was born, she spotted me standing near the house when you first brought him home from the hospital. I wanted to see my nephews but that was the final straw for me and she sent people to our home to rob us of everything. They even hurt Vic because he wouldn't stop crying. He was only a baby."
Scott's mouth hung open.
"She sent people to hurt you because you wanted to be part of our son's lives?" He questioned.
Nathan nodded.
"I couldn't believe it either. We are family, you don't do that to your family. We were close too, just like Jacob and William. It still hurts to know that she hates me so much to do something like that."
Anthony and Margo glanced at each other. It sounded like there was more to this story. Surely, Grace doesn't just despise werewolves for no reason.
"But why did she come out of the shadows now and ask for you to be involved with Jacota?" Flora asked.
Nathan looked at his nephews and then at his son. Vic sat with crossed arms as he listened to his dad. He has known about Grace, Jacob and William for a long time but he never thought to think that Jacob was his relative when Hunter was mates with someone of the same name.
"I think she freaked out when he was paired with Hunter. She rejected the fact that her son was going to be involved with wolves his whole life. When she realised that even she couldn't stop it from happening, I guess she wanted someone who she could sort of trust to look after him."
William watched his little brother as the guilt and the sadness built in his eyes. He knew Jacob felt responsible for quite a lot of his mother's mistakes and it wasn't fair.
"I just don't get it," Scott sighed. "Yes, we never talked about werewolves because obviously, we were keeping secrets from each other but not once did I think she would do such a thing to her family. It's cruel and I wasn't aware that she was capable of it." Scott didn't want to jump to conclusions. Maybe she has changed after all this time and he needed to speak to her and see if she regrets what she has done.
If not, a divorce was sadly in sight. He could not be married to someone like her, especially after what she has done to Jacob for so long.
"Um, there's more you should know," Nathan sighed sadly. "This might be a shock to you and I'm sorry to be the one to tell you, but the people she sent to rob us and terrorise us all those years ago worked for my parents."
Everyone felt like his words had kicked them in the stomach. The sound was suddenly sucked out of the room and Jacob turned numb. A pin drop would be extremely visible in the silence.
"I'm sorry," Scott sat forwards, his eyes leaking with extreme concern. "Her parents?"
Nathan nodded and took a big breath.
"I only found this out recently and honestly, it really horrified me," He didn't want to hesitate and it was hard for him to look Scott in the eye. "But..." He felt incredibly ashamed." My parents are werewolf hunters."
