Chapter 76
Lunar Whispers
"If anyone has any information about the whereabouts of the Omega wolves and fails to speak up right now, I will bring Jacota here to deal with you." Anthony stood in front of the huge crowd of werewolves. The city meeting started fifteen minutes ago. He spent the time explaining what has happened to his son.
Most of the werewolves were utterly disgusted and appalled by what Ricky, Jonah and Harrison did to Hunter. Yet some were not surprised. He is a very special werewolf and being mated to a God, people can get jealous.
A hushed murmur made its way around the hall as Anthony glared at their faces, showing his anger. He waited until it fell silent again and found himself being disappointed.
"Not one single person knows where they went?" Crossing his arms, he grasped the fact that they were keeping something from him. "Raise your hands if you knew there was a group of nonbelievers, plotting to kill the God?"
Slowly, not even a quarter of the wolves raised their hands.
Anthony glanced at his Beta wolf and they both understood that at least one person had more information.
"Jacob, can you come to the city meeting, please. I need your help." He knew he could connect a mind link with him now because they know each other well enough. The bond recognises family who is also werewolves.
It took a matter of seconds for Jacob to be effortlessly standing next to Hunter's father. Luckily he has had a shower and was dressed. Also, his landing was very smooth and he didn't even make a sound.
The crowd gasped and blinked back their confusion. Of course, being in the presence of Jacota meant only one thing. Everyone suddenly dropped to their knees and bowed out of respect.
Anthony turned, giving him an encouraging smile.
"Are you able to detect the liars? Nobody is telling me anything about the Omega's."
Still feeling angry about the situation, Jacob gladly looked around, spotting the weak minds and the nervous eyes. He could read people very well and a few members of the crowd stood out to him. Pointing at them would be awkward, so he stepped down off the stage and started weaving his way through.
He stopped next to a woman with trembling hands. Her blonde hair fell over her eyes however, he could feel her nerves.
"What do you know?" Jacob's voice made her flinch. He didn't want them to be scared of him, it wasn't the reputation he was building for himself.
"P-Please, I-I didn't mean to see anything!" She cried, breaking her calm expression.
"Stand up," Anthony boomed. "Tell everyone what you saw."
She climbed to her feet and Jacob stood back, giving her space.
"Yesterday, I saw Harrison and his family pack up and leave. They looked stressed about something but I didn't think to ask where they were going. I saw you searching his home shortly after. I should have said something."
"Did you see what direction they went in?"
"Yes, they went East towards the city centre."
"Thank you." Anthony looked around once more. "Is there anyone else Jacota?"
The God's wise eyes glanced around, finding a man who was staring at him with too much confidence. Being a little wary, he walked over.
"What-" The man suddenly jumped to his feet and flung his hands around his neck. Jacob instantly tensed as everyone around them scrambled back. Anthony gasped and jumped down from the stage. The man was threatening to squeeze the air from Jacob's lungs. His heart was pumping phenomenally fast.
"You killed my sister yesterday, you monster!" He roared.
"She was going to kill my mate," Jacob frowned and allowed the electricity to circle his hands, causing the people around him to stare with wonder and fear.
"But-"
"But what?" Jacob was angry. "I will do anything to protect him."
"Even killing? She didn't deserve to die."
"Neither does Hunter. Don't give what you can't take." Jacob pulled back and Anthony relaxed. "I'm sorry that she lost her life but don't think, not even for one second, that I will stand by and watch you hurt the people I love."
Saying those words made them understand that he has feelings too. Just because he is a God doesn't mean that his emotions have changed.
"What do you know?" Anthony questioned and climbed back onto the stage.
The man sighed and the sadness crept into his eyes.
"The Omega wolves have travelled to the next city, trying to convince the leader of that community to let them live there."
Anthony turned to his pack. He knew Annette, she ran the city which stood East to his.
"Ray, get in touch with Annette, tell her the situation and arrange a meeting with her as soon as possible."
"Yes, Alpha."
"Thank you, everyone, for coming today. I hope you will warn me next time wolves are planning to kill my son," He scowled. "And have faith in Jacota, he is here to help."
Jacob moved through the crowd when they stood up and started flowing through the double doors at the back of the hall. Nobody wanted to stick around when Anthony was annoyed with them.
"Can you teleport us back to the house? I want to see how Hunter is doing."
"Sure," Jacob breathed.
"Are you okay? That man didn't hurt you did he?"
"No, it just shocked me. I'll be fine." If that happened to him a few weeks ago, he would surely have a meltdown.
"Alright," Anthony nodded. "But just because Hunter is weakly minded at the minute doesn't mean that you have to step up and be stable. It's okay if you're not, you're both going through a lot of changes in your life."
"I know. I guess-"
"Forgive me for interrupting Jacota, but Annette only spoke with the Omega wolves an hour ago. She gave them permission to stay in the city, but she didn't know what they had done. She knows where they are staying and gives permission for only Hunter and Jacota to enter her territory."
"Why them and not me?"
"Because she believes that your son needs to sort out his own battles. They are her words, not mine," The beta wolf quickly added.
Anthony sighed and furrowed his eyebrows.
"Hunter woke up this morning and said that he wanted to kill them," Jacob spoke quietly. "I think it would help if he did it by himself. I can watch close by and if he's in danger, I'll help."
Anthony didn't like the idea of that, but his son is not a child and he does need to fight his own battles.
"We'll wait until he's better and then you can make your move. If Hunter doesn't end up killing them, get them arrested, or kill them yourself."
Every time Jacob heard the word kill, it felt like someone was hitting him hard on the head. He still didn't regret what he did to those wolves but meeting a family member of the deceased took his stability by surprise.
* * * * *
"I can breathe a little better now," Hunter had just taken a shower and it took him almost forty-five minutes. He had to take breaks and washing was incredibly sore. "I feel better because I'm clean."
Jacob smiled and helped him to pull a hoody over his head. Hunter winced when his shoulder sent searing pain down his arm. Jacob was already holding the sling and quickly put it on him when his arm successfully made it through the sleeve.
"It's time to have more pain killers."
"I don't want the ones I had earlier, I want to actually spend time with you instead of falling asleep on you."
"They are only what the doctor recommended. If you think you can handle the pain then take different ones." Jacob hated seeing his discomfort but it's not his body.
"I might take them before going to bed so I can sleep." Hunter's right hand clung onto Jacob's t-shirt, holding him close. "Now, I know you've been wanting to talk to me about how awful I feel. But I don't want to right now. I think I want the fact that I don't have a pack anymore to settle in first."
"It's fine, whenever you're ready." Jacob really didn't want to push him, not when he's hurting physically and mentally. "But um..." He hushed his voice because the bedroom door was open. "I think you should talk to Sam."
"What about?" Hunter lifted his hand and wrapped his arm around his shoulders, unable to resist his warmth. His scent was driving him crazy, as usual.
"About what he admitted to you."
Hunter raised his eyebrows and studied those silky cocoa-coloured eyes.
"How..." Cocking his head to the side, he smiled. "You've known for longer than me, haven't you?"
Jacob nodded.
"Well, after the Lunar cycle ended, I just saw it. The way he gets giddy around William and offers to spend time with him is obvious. And he's the only person he will stop and stare at for longer than a few minutes without losing interest. But it's almost like I can see where his attraction is going."
"Why didn't you say anything?"
"It's not really my place to tell everyone. He told you when he thought he was going to die, that says a lot about how much he wanted to keep it a secret."
"You're right, but I think I know why." Hunter was getting tired so he slowly walked over to the bed and sat down. "His family are I think... a bit on the homophobic side. They used to come and visit us all the time but since I've been mated with you, they haven't been to just hang out, and they're constantly worrying about Sam and always questioning him about whether he's in the right pack or not."
"Do you think they'll reject him?"
Hunter nodded.
"But they have never been a super close family, so I don't know how much it's swaying his decision to keep it a secret."
"I'll go get him and tell him you want to talk." Jacob turned but hunter caught his fingers.
"Kiss me and then I'll let you go." Hunter realised that his weakness is watching the blush rise on Jacob's cheeks. He loves it when it makes him flustered and awkward. He finds it cute when he gets a little sheepish.
Jacob pursed his lips, trying to slow his excited heart. Leaning down he aimed for Hunter's cheek but he wanted more. The werewolf turned his head and caught his lips instead. Jacob didn't mind, he wanted it just as much as him.
"When I'm better, we're gonna have the greatest make-out session."
Jacob's pink cheeks deepened with colour as he bit his bottom lip. Standing up straight, he gently pulled his fingers out of Hunter's grip.
"I'm looking forwards to it." With that said, he simply turned and continued his quest to find Sam.
Hunter could only watch with an open mouth.
"I hate you for being so irresistible!" He yelled after him and started pleading for his body to heal.
When Jacob reached the ground floor, he could hear the unmistakable babbling from Sam. He found it really sweet that he was falling head over heels for his brother. He stood in the doorway and watched how he barely paused for breath when talking to Scott. However, he was talking about his feelings and nobody else was in the room. It dawned on Jacob that he had just interrupted something personal, and Sam was having a little therapy session with his psychologist of a father.
"Uh.. oh um, I'll come back later," He mumbled when Sam stopped talking.
"No it's okay Jacob," He called after him. "You can come in."
Jacob reappeared in the doorway with guilty eyes.
"I didn't mean to interrupt."
"It's okay son," Scott beamed.
Jacob started to fidget, almost forgetting what he was here for.
"Uh, Hunter want's to talk to you, Sam."
The Beta wolf knew immediately what it would be about as he bounced from his seat and walked over.
"Thanks. How's he doing?"
"Not bad, he's healing fast."
"Good, he'll start to get really moody if he's cooped up inside for longer than a day," Sam chuckled and walked around Jacob, heading for the stairs. He was a little nervous to talk to his Alpha about it, even though he knew he'd understand.
It was nice that Hunter offered him support, even though there are a million other things that he could be doing. What they went through yesterday will most definitely bring their friendship closer.
When he reached the bedroom, Hunter was staring into space and subconsciously picking at his sling.
Sam cleared his throat.
"Alpha, you wanted to talk to me?"
Hunter sat more comfortably on the bed with a small smile.
"Shut the door if you don't want anyone else to hear."
Sam did as he said and sat next to him.
"I'm sorry I didn't tell you sooner."
"You don't need to be sorry, your private life doesn't really concern me."
"It does though, how are you supposed to trust me if I'm keeping secrets? But that's the only one, I swear."
Hunter shook his head.
"It's fine, Sam, I trust you."
"Okay good. But also, you haven't told Jacob, have you?"
"He knew before me. His weird God mind can just tell these things. Nobody can keep secrets from him anymore."
Sam's eyes widened.
"He knows about me liking his brother?"
Hunter nodded.
"I think you need to snap out of that. He's not your mate, you're just causing yourself heart-ache for no reason."
"I know, I'm annoying myself but I can't just switch off my feelings. What if I never find my mate? Then I'm left alone forever when I could have settled down with someone, but I can't settle down with someone and then find my mate, that would be awful. I don't know what to do. I'm so desperate to have what you and Jacob have, it's taking over my life. I want to know what it's like to be bonded to someone and to feel loved like-"
"Sam, breathe please, you're stressing me out."
"Sorry," He sighed, getting a little ahead of himself.
"Have you thought about telling your parents?"
"Yes. I think about saying it to them every day but we both know they'll hate it."
"Well, you practically live here anyway. There's always a room for you here if it doesn't go well."
"I may as well start packing up my room," Sam sighed. "I'll be sad if they don't want anything to do with me, but whatever. If they can kick me out without a second thought, they don't deserve me. I am the best son they'll ever have."
"You're an only child."
"Don't ruin my moment," Sam rolled his eyes and was surprised that Hunter didn't lift a hand to smack him. "But do you mean it, that I could stay here?"
"Yeah, my parents would never turn their backs on you. And I won't either, not after what you did yesterday. I'm so thankful for that Sam, you have no idea."
"You're like a brother to me, I'd do the same thing again. And I'd like to think that you'd do the same for me, even though I'm not as important."
Hunter shook his head with a low chuckle.
"I wouldn't be able to live with myself if you were in my situation and I didn't jump in the water after you."
Sam's eyes started to water. He felt an immense pride deep inside his heart. It meant the world to him to hear his Alpha say something so kind.
"Thank you," He whispered and leaned in for a hug.
"No, come on, this is too much." Hunter tensed as Sam wrapped himself around him, trying not to hurt his injured body. But before he had the chance to pull away, the door opened, leaving Anthony standing with a smirk.
"Aw, you're having a heart to heart moment, how cute."
"Shut up," Hunter grumbled and pulled away. "Sam, you're in my territory and I'm actually trying so hard not to punch you in the face right now."
Sam knew their moment was over and it felt good for them both to open up. It has definitely made their friendship stronger.
The Beta wolf quickly hurried out of the room and stood next to Anthony.
"Anyway, Hunter I just thought you should know that we've found the Omega wolves, they're in Annette's city. Only you and Jacob are allowed in, so when you're better, you might want to start thinking about what you're planning to do. I trust that Jacob won't let you do anything stupid."
Hunter's heart thumped in his chest. Still, he was angry, livid even.
"Dad, I'm going to kill them." Staring into his parent's eyes, they shared the same twinkle of revenge. Anthony knew he spoke the truth, and he was glad.
