finish with their tests. I cannot care less

I shiver as lie down on the bed in the emergency room, waiting for the doctors about my injury. A bump in the head, some scratches and bruising are nothing compared to Kayden’s injuries.

He used his body to cover me! What was he thinking?

When we were married, he couldn’t even care less if I got run over by a train right in front of him. Now, he has just risked his life, in order to save mine.

What a crazy day this has been!

First, I found out that Kayden was the boy I fancied myself in love with when I was a little girl.

Second, Ethan proposed to me in front of everybody! Which brings me to the third: I rejected him… also in front everybody.

And fourth, I had a car accident with my ex-isband. Of all people I could be in the car with, I would never imagine that it would be Kayden.

I remember the tender way that Kayden looked at me. He said that he found me, his guardian angel. Did that mean that he figured out that I also saved him when we were kids?

“Where is she? I need to see her!”

I hear Ethan’s familiar voice before he enters my room. The moment he sees me, he wastes no time to pull me into his

arms.

“Thank God you’re okay!” he whispers as he buries his face in my hair. “I thought I lost you forever!”

“I’m okay,” I assure him. “Just minor cuts that will leave no scars. That cliff wasn’t that high.”

“I’m sorry, sweetheart. It’s my fault. You ran off because of me. I shouldn’t have put you on the spot. I totally understand why you’d run off like that”

Ethan is one of the most composed people I know. But right now, I see that he’s losing his cool, and he looks almost as if he’s falling apart.

He really does love me.

My heart feels full and breaks at the same time. I know that Ethan is good for me. He’ll be good to Kai, too. He will treat me right. He will love me the way that I deserve to be loved.

The way Kayden never did…..

But Kayden…

Suddenly, I remember Kayden and the state he was in when the ambulance came. Almost in a panic, I turn to the nurse.

“The guy that I came with is he going to be okay?”

Ethan pulls away from me, his expression darkening, but I ignor him.

“Mister Steele? He’s still in surgery

I sit up from the bed.

“Where are you going?” Ethan asks.

Yeah! Where am I going?

Is it a good idea to go and see Kayden now when nobody has any idea of our past relationship? Ethan has no idea that Kayden was my husband… and that Kayden is Kai’s biological father.

And who will I see outside the operating room? Megan?

Knowing her, she will berate me and blame me for Kayden’s accident. She will accuse me of stealing Kayden from Ethan raises a brow, expecting an answer from me. I simply shake my head. “I just need to pee.” I lie.

“Toilet is over there, the nurse points to the door on the left.

Ethan takes my arm and guides me towards the toilet. “Call out if you feel like you’re going to faint, okay?”

I nod.

Inside the toilet, I fish my phone and send a text to Lyn.

I found the owner of the lake resort. So, don’t bother looking for him.”

I figured you already know, Lyn replies. “Ethan is asking me why you were together.”

“What did you say?”

“I said, ‘beats me. That’s it.

“Okay. Thank you. I’ll be home soon. But please send me updates on Kayden’s surgery”

‘Okay!

As soon as I get out of the room, I find Ethan standing attentively by the door.

“Everything okay?” he asks.

I nod. “Peachy.”

A doctor walks in to deliver my test results.

“You are lucky,” he said to me. “You did not even s

sustain any broken bone.”

Yes! Because Kayden took most of the impact for me!

“Mr. Steele has sustained a lot more. But maybe you’ll be happy to know that the surgery is successful. He’ll be just fine.”

I nod. “Thank you for the update.”

“You are free to go now But I think there are detectives outside meaning to speak to you.”

“Can she not see them?” Ethan interrupts. “She’s still in shock. They might aggravate her.”

“I’m afraid you’re gonna have to ask them yourself,” the doctor says, “I can’t lie and tell them that she’s unfit to answer any questions.”

With that, the doctor leaves.

I turn to Ethan. “Don’t worry. I’ll be fine. It was an accident. I’m sure it’s just standard procedure. They’re just doing their jobs.”

I sit back on the bed as two police officers walk in.

“I’m Detective Moran, and this is my partner. Detective Rodriguez. We’re from the Crimes Investigation Department.”

“Crimes?” Ethan echoes. “But isn’t it just a roadside accident?”

“Unfortunately, sir, we have reason to believe that this is not just an accident. There is a possibility that this is an attempted murder case.”

“Murder?” My eyes widen in shock. Who are they trying to kill!

Detective Moran nods his head. “We reviewed the footage. There was a truck behind you and it looks like it deliberately bumped into Mister Steele’s car. And after you fell to the sea, the driver didn’t even bother to stop. The detective turns to me.Do you recall noticing anything suspicious before the accident!

I shake my head. “No. I don’t even recall seeing anyone else on the road.”

“Do you have enemies, Miss Carlisle?”

“Enemies? I’m not even from here anymore,” I reply. “I can’t think of anyone who would want to harm me. And I don’t think anybody has reason to.”

“What about Mister Steele? Does he have any enemies?

“How would she know?” Ethan answers for me. “She and Mister Steele just met. They are nothing more than new business

associates.

Detective Moran exchanges a look with his partner, and then he turns to me, obviously wanting me to answer his question.

They’re detectives. Chances are, they’ve already looked at our records and they know that Kayden and I used to be married. Lying is absolutely pointless. Plus, it may make me look less credible.

I simply shake my head. “No. 1 don’t know if Kayden has enemies who would want to do this. But I’m sure Steele Corp., runs a legitimate business. Anyone who has beef with Kayden can easily go to court.”

“Can you tell us where you and Mister Steele going before the accident?”

I shake my head. “We weren’t going anywhere. I take a sideways glance at Ethan. “was just trying to clear my head. I got out of the lake resort and Kayden just… accompanied me.”

“Are you saying that your trip was completely unplanned?”

I nod. “That’s correct.”

“Ex-husband?” Ethan echoes, shooting me a shocked glance.
