Chapter 7

First Day

The Billionaire of New York City

Monday came fast. I was standing in front of the mirror, looking over my look.

I wore a red blouse that tucked into my short black pencil skirt. Basic office material.

By the time I got to work it was 7:40 am.

Perfect.

I entered the building and said goodbye to the cold drizzling air and welcomed the warm.

I walked into the elevator and pressed the button that had 90.

The elevator stopped multiple times to let people on and off. By the time I reached my floor it was 7:55.

I walked out of the elevator and into the waiting area where I previously was only a week ago.

The blonde haired lady was sitting at her desk and intently staring at her computer.

"Hi."

She looked up as I spoke and gave me a smile.

"Good morning. Mr. Carter is expecting you. And my name is Kate by the way."

"Thank you. And my name is Kyla."

I gave her a quick smile and headed towards Mr. Carter's office. I knocked lightly on the door three times.

His deep voice sent me chills down my body. "Come in."

I opened the door and saw him looking up and smiling at me.

"How are you this morning Miss Owens?"

I looked into his eyes that gave me another wave of chills.

"I'm well. And you?"

"Fantastic."

He sat up and started walking straight towards me. My body just kind of froze. Right before he was a foot away from me, he turned and opened the door.

"Follow me."

I took a breath and sent my nerves away.

"This" he said while opening a door across from his own "is your office."

The office was quite big actually. It was on a corner of the building. Two of the walls were windows, on each side of the corner. The desk was facing towards one of the windows.

The wall with the door had a grey couch and a black coffee table with magazines placed on them.

There was another door next to the desk that had a bathroom in it.

"Each morning you will check your email. The one I send you has your tasks for the day. You may get started."

He motioned towards the desk that had a black computer sitting on it.

"Yes sir."

Mr. Carter gave me a smile before he shut the door and left.

I placed my purse on the coffee table and laid my jacket on the couch.

The email he had sent me explained, like he said, what I'm supposed to do today.

The first thing was to cancel all his appointments this Thursday and reschedule them for another soon available date.

That alone took me till lunch to finish.

"Excuse me, Kyla?"

Kate walked in and gave me a warm smile.

"Yes Kate?"

"Mr. Carter would like me to inform you that you can have your lunch break now."

"Okay thank you."

I thought that was the end of our conversation but she didn't leave.

"Um I was wondering, since we have the same time for lunch, if you would want to go eat at the works cafeteria?"

"Yeah of course. Let me just grab my phone."

The cafeteria was on the second floor. It provided a variety of foods to chose from. In the end I chose a turkey sandwich with a salad for a side while Kate chose a hamburger and fries.

In the cafeteria, there was several circle tables throughout the room.

Most of everybody must of have the same time for lunch because it was rather busy. After a few minutes we eventually found an empty table towards the back.

Kate sat down across from me. We conversed about our favorite things, foods and likes. She and I described where we lived and for how long.

I was in the middle of taking my last bite of my sandwich when Kate started another conversation.

"So about Mr. Carter."

I looked up at her waiting for her to continue but she didn't.

"What about him," I mumbled out. The last bite was still being chewed in my mouth.

"He's hot as hell!"

I started choking on the bread as it was just going down. I took a drink of water and managed to get it down.

I looked at Kate and her face was red from holding in the laughter.

"Go ahead. Let it out," I sighed.

Even though the room was filled with many people meaning many conversations, her laughter could be heard all around. A few tables actually stopped eating to look at her.

"Oh my god, I'm crying." She said as she sniffed and wiped her teary eyes.

"Why would you say something like that?"

Kate went serious. "Dude really? Do you not see him. Are you blind?"

I scoffed. "No I am not blind. He's my boss. It's weird."

She gave me a dry laugh. "It's not weird. I think he's hot and he's my boss. I try to talk to him every chance I get. But seeing as your his personal assistant, I have some competition." Her eyes went into a joking deadly stare.

"Right. But I guess I'll admit he is pretty good looking."

"Of course he is."

We finished up our lunch and headed back up to the 90th floor.

Besides me, Mr. Carter and Kate, there was only two other people that worked on the floor.

"I'll see you later Kyla."

Kate gave me a wave and sat back down at her desk.

I entered my office and sat back down to read the rest of the mail.

The last three things I had to do went by slowly. It was 6:00 pm when I had finished up my last task.

Entered the room was Mr. Carter.

"Oh hi sir. I actually just finished up here."

"I'm glad. I saw you talking to Kate. Made a new friend?"

"Yes sir."

"Good. I want you to be welcomed here. Throughout your time here, some days can be more stressful than others. I hope you can handle that."

I gave a little laugh. "I can handle anything sir."

His smile sent yet another wave of chills throughout my body.

As I was logging off and shutting down the computer, Mr. Carter sat down on the couch.

"Red is a good color on you."

I looked up at him blindsided he would give me a compliment.

"Um thank you sir. I thought so too."

His smile. It could do things to me.

I stood up and walked over to the couch. I grabbed my purse making sure everything was in there. Then I looked at him. He was staring at me.

I looked down at my shoes and then back at him. We made full on eye contact.

"Can I help you with something, Kyla?"

The way he said my name made me want to melt right there. But I held myself together.

"You're sitting on my jacket."

"Oh," was all he said. He stood up and picked up my jacket, attempting to smooth it out.

"Don't worry about it. It's fine."

I smiled and took the jacket out of his hands and put it on me.

"I'll see you tomorrow sir."

"Alright. Goodbye. Kyla."
