Chapter 17: Deceptive Wings

The Fifth God

Ashfall lowered his weapon, staring down at the lifeless demigod—two bullets in the head.

But the wound on the creature's leg had already healed... what could that mean?

Relieved, he let himself fall onto his back.

B-Day began to laugh in disbelief. "We actually did it..." he said, eyes closing with exhaustion and joy.

Lira sat down beside them, a brief smile crossing her face.

They remained there in silence for a few minutes, catching their breath, before slowly sitting up again and discussing their next steps.

"We still need to head toward the mountains—the second hand's clearly pointing that way," Ashfall said, rising to his feet and glancing at B-Day's shattered leg.

"We should—"

Suddenly, the body of the supposedly dead demigod twitched.

The ground trembled, as if something had been ripped out of the earth.

Its joints snapped and twisted at unnatural angles—like a corpse rising again from the grave.

None of them had time to react before the demigod stood tall once more.

"You really got me there... too bad my ability doesn't allow me to die, huh?" he said with a grin.

Blood still poured down his face; the two bullet holes in his skull hadn't even closed yet.

"Sorry to interrupt—"

Something struck the demigod with a blur of speed, launching him through the forest like a ragdoll.

"…The ability of the twin Demigods of Greed is to sacrifice part of their possessions in exchange for regeneration," came a voice from within the red mist.

A figure stepped forward.

"Become followers of the One True Ruler—join me, Orvak, and be saved by His light!"

He had been the one who kicked the demigod away with that devastating strike.

"Will you accept salvation—or choose death?" Orvak asked, arms outstretched toward them.

"Join—"

Before he could finish, something hit him with massive force, hurling him in the opposite direction.

In the moment before he vanished into the trees, his eyes met theirs—as if to say we'll meet again.

"Filth…" muttered the Demigod of Greed, wiping the blood and dirt from his face.

"I'll deal with you three in a moment," he said, before vanishing in pursuit of Orvak.

The trio had no clue what had just happened—but it gave them a chance to run.

A chance they seized without hesitation.

They hauled B-Day up as best they could, and ran.

And ran.

And kept running—even knowing it was likely pointless.

But they had no other choice.

In the distance, they heard the clash of powers—shocks so strong they could feel them in the ground.

Every impact between the two giants of strength sent tremors through the earth.

Disoriented, overwhelmed, and filled with questions, they lost all sense of direction.

Their watches went berserk—hands spinning wildly, changing positions with each tick.

And then—they reached a cliff.

An endless abyss, its bottom lost in darkness.

"What now...?" Lira asked, gasping, genuinely panicked for the first time.

Ashfall's thoughts spiraled.

Had they really believed they could kill an upper demigod?

Had they truly been that naive?

He slapped himself.

"Get it together!" he screamed inside his own mind.

Then the pain returned in full force—his internal injuries, the searing agony in his left cheek...

B-Day lost his balance as Ashfall collapsed, triggering a chain reaction.

And the ground beneath them gave way.

The cliff shattered, and they plunged—

Falling deeper and deeper into the unknown.

This time, there was no grappling hook to save them.

Only endless descent.

All three had already made peace with death.

There was no way to survive an impact from this height.
