Iris

Opening my eyes, I find myself under a white cloudy sky and lay over the soft green grass. I sit upright, finding the fogs all over the place. It is lighted up but I can feel no sunlight.

"Iris," I freeze at the mature voice.

As I slowly turn to confirm my doubt, the scene changes, and I am here in a hospital room, sitting and looking at my Grandpa.

He is smiling like himself as he ruffles my hair. He laughs, looking at me. His laughter is like chocolate cake with caramel poured on it. Then, all of a sudden everything stops. Everything just stops. The ticking of the second hand of the clock stops. The beeping of the machines stops. His breathing count stops.

'Grandpa! Grandpa! Wake up! Don't leave me. I love you, Grandpa. Don't leave me. Take me away. Take me away.' I try to say but nothing comes out of my mouth.

I move towards him and shake him vigorously in an attempt so that he snaps out of this phase and tells me that this was a prank. But, no, his watery chocolate brown eyes are just looking up, without blinking.

Ignoring all of my pleas, he is going. He isn't waking up but I still shake him, try to tell him that I love him and he is breaking a promise.

'Don't break the promise, Dada. Don't break—'

Someone pulls me away from him, so fast that I can't feel Grandpa's green dirty gown under my fingers. I kick, punch, elbow, and whatnot but the person doesn't leave me.

I can still see Grandpa, though. He is still there without any air or any working heart but he is there.

Suddenly, people wearing black cape surround me, holding big injections in their hands. I want to go away from those big guns but they are just closing on me like they want to hurt me, pierce me in pieces and make holes in me.

To make it worse, Grandpa's soul lifts off from his body and goes up.

'Take them away! Take those away from me! Grandpa! Come back! Needles—take them away. Sa—'

"Iris, Iris, Iris!" I hear someone say.

'You are hurting me. Take those damn needles away! Away from me—ah!'

Someone coos, as sudden warmth, engulfs me," Iris, wake up. No needles, honey, wake up."

I open my eyes to find myself in my Dad's arms as Mom rubs my shoulder with worry written all over her face. I dig myself in Dad's warmth as I start to cry, profusely.

"The...there were nee—needles. I—" I stutter.

"Shh, honey. It is all over, now. It is all over," Mom says, hugging me and Dad but I can hear her ragged breathing.

***

Some giggling from back brings me back to the present as I try not to think much about anything from yesterday.

Right now, I am sitting in the library reading The da Vinci Code, trying to blank out all the thoughts of today's happenings and focusing on Robert Langdon but, no, my brain must replay the little eye contact between me and Noah this morning.

When his amber eyes had slid to mine, there was a flicker of something... something like he cared.

I scoff, internally, at the thought.

He doesn't.

His words from last night ring like a bell in my mind.

Fragile and weak.

The emphasis he had done on these didn't go unnoticed by me. The words were filled with so much anger and frustration that it...just hurts.

"Dan Brown is amazing, isn't it?" Someone says, screeching the chair, in front of me. I look up from my book to see Adi, looking at me.

"Hey, AS," I say with a small smile.

"Milady." He smiles back. "We sure are meeting after a long time."

"Adi, it has been only forty minutes and thirty-four seconds since lunch break ended..." I tell him.

He grins, "Whoa, Noah's right. You sure do count time, unconsciously."

On the mention of his name, I look around to find him but there isn't any trace of him. I did forget that we three have spare together.

"He is in the field, right now. Practicing." Adi tells me, getting my attention back to him.

"Oh," That is all I can reply.

"Iris, Noah isn't bad. He has a temper but, definitely, didn't mean to hurt your feelings. I know he is sorry because I know him well and, he told me to tell you."

I give him a dry look and reply, "Tell him to say it to me, himself."

"That's the thing, Iris," He shrugs. "He never says sorry."

"Stubborn," I grumble and Adi laughs.

"Aren't you too?"

"I am not going to say sorry either," I tell him, honestly. I breathe out, "Maybe I would after he does."

"Isn't my apology enough?" Adi's brown eyes sparkle and I huff out.

"No."

"I guess I tried..." Adi sighs, rubbing his neck.

I put my book aside and look at him, asking, "What's up with Noah?"

Adi raises an eyebrow, looking at me for a moment. "Why do you ask?" he asks back.

"Just..." I stop, not knowing what to reply. "I don't know?"

"We all have secrets, Iris," He replies, smiling. "Some hide them and forget about them while some don't."

"That's very cryptic of you," I narrow my eyes.

"Kinda like a bad boy, no?" He grins and says, "Also, if you ever have a plan for a treasure hunt, just call me up."

"I don't have your number, Adi."

"Is that a way of asking you are interested—?"

"Adi," I laugh as he starts wiggling his eyebrows. "Stop that."

Just now, the bell rings, announcing the commencement of last period—shit.

"You okay, Iris?" Adi asks, looking at me.

"Library is like three minutes and six seconds away from the girl's locker room and then it takes a minute and a half to wear gym uniform. Shit! I am gonna be late." I say all in a breath, dashing out of the library. "Bye, Adi. I have to go."

After bolting towards the changing room and putting on the gym uniform, I run for the fields.

It would have been better if it had been hills.

I laugh at how creative my brain is under pressure. This only lasts for a second as slowly I start falling towards—wait what? Is that a wet sign—

"Shit," I say, bracing for the fall only to fall into someone's arms.

"Iris?"

I can recognize this husky voice anywhere.

I look up to find his navy-blue eyes as he steadies me, looking back into my eyes.

I know I am already standing properly on the floor, but I can't peel my eyes from his face. Sure, meeting him face to face after eight months, I notice some changes in him. He is sporting a beard now and his pale blonde has been cut short and dyed to a dirty blonde color.

"Pretty as always," Thomas mutters, looking at me.

I break away from his hold, looking down on the floor before looking back at him. He doesn't look away from my face.

"You okay, Iris?" He asks, his voice wretched with worry.

Could be faking, for all I care.

"You shouldn't be the one asking that, Scott," I say back, crossing my arms over my chest.

He takes a deep breath and, only for a moment, I see the pain in his eyes. I don't know if I should feel happy or sad about it.

"Iris..." He whispers, coming closer to me. "Please. Just hear me out."

"I am late; I have to go," I turn around and run as fast as I can.

What's worse than meeting your ex-boyfriend that can happen today?

***

A lot worse, I guess.

"Why the hell," I grit my jaw. "are you on top of me, Noah?"

Let's rewind the events: Stupid practicing soccer and talking to Aditya—me just jogging near—seventeen seconds more, he running towards me and voila, both of us fall down on the ground.

"Are you alright?" Noah looks across my face, concerned, propping himself on the palms of his hands on the ground.

I look at him, trying to decipher him.

"Bella, are you okay?" He asks again, softly—so soft that I almost forget his words from yesterday. Almost.

"Why—I don't understand," I look away, before looking at him, again. "What do you mean if I—"

"My, my, my," Adi crouches down to our height, grinning. "This is certainly a night to remember."

"Adi..." I can see the familiar scowl creeping back into his features. He starts mumbling some sentences in Italian which neither Adi nor I can understand as we both look at him, confused.

"Well, if you have stopped mumbling, will you be kind enough to get the hell off?" I sneer and Noah looks surprised but then, an amused smirk appears that can mean no good.

"Are you not enjoying this position?" He says, amused as I glare at him. "Most girls would certainly love to be—"

I push him away and he falls on his back on Adi.

"I hope that answered your question," I say back, glaring, as I sit upon the ground.

Adi grunts under his weight but Noah lets his torture be short, moving away and sitting on the ground. He looks at me, a small smile tugging on his lips as if he is—

I cannot believe this idiot.

He is enjoying watching me so riled up?

I say to him, "Do you have some sadistic reason to be this confusing?"

"Yeah, he does that a lot." Adi pipes in and Noah and I jump in our places. We look at him, looking at us as if he is watching some drama series.

"Shit, I forgot you were here too," I say, looking at him.

Adi frowns. "Am I for—"

"No, no, no," I say, shaking my head. "I am sorry—I didn't mean it in that sense. I am—"

"Bella, he is joking," Noah runs his hand through his hair, before giving Adi a look.

Adi ignores him, swiftly, and holds my hand, grinning. "No worries, milady. You are better than someone."

"Are you serious?" Noah points at him. "You have five seconds head start before I star—"

"Ugh," I groan, standing up. "This cliched macho-ness is boring."

Adi starts laughing while Noah raises his eyebrows at me, before standing up, too. Discreetly, I take a look at him. He has worn his normal attire: a black t-shirt, black jeans, a black leather jacket, and black shoes (the abundance of the shade black).

"Well, this macho-ness saved you from—"

"Cooper, you okay?" Coach Tucker asks and I look at him, confused. "You were about to get hit with a soccer ball, if Radcliffe hadn't interfered... you would have got badly hurt."

I pause, letting the information set in. I look at Noah who is bickering with Adi about some party.

Well, that explains why he looked so disoriented but I can't get my head around this. If he had so much problem with me, yesternight, why would he...

I shake my head, trying to get rid of the thoughts. I look back at Coach Tucker, smiling. "I am okay."

"Good," Then, he pauses as he smiles. "I was actually meaning to talk to you."

"What do you mean?" I ask, confused.

"Why don't you join as the assistant coach for the school team?"

"What?" There is a unanimous shock from Noah and me. I look at Noah, surprised by his reaction; he composes himself, before covering his expression with a nonchalant expression.

Coach Tucker seems unfazed as he continues, "Cooper, I know you like playing soccer, and also you are good at it. So why not? I can definitely use someone as level-headed as you to deal with the team." He then turns to Noah and says, "Also, I need to make an announcement during the practice later."

Noah straightens up and looks at him, confused. "Announcement? What do you—"

"So, Cooper, if you agree to join, just come to the field after your practice tomorrow," Coach Tucker says to me, before going off to other students.

"Well, this is an interesting turn of events," Adi says, grinning, as he wraps his hands on my and Noah's shoulders. "I think he meant Iris should be in the team for handling Noah."

"You are looking too deep into his words," Noah states, frowning.

"For once, I agree with Stupid," I shrug off Adi's hands. "Well, whatever, I need time to think about it," I pause, backing slowly. "And thank you for...doing that, Noah. Okay, bye!"

"Bella, not so soon," Noah holds me back by my hand and I turn towards him. "I need to talk to you..." He looks back where Adi is pretending not to listen to us, before looking at me. "...alone"

Taken aback, I look at him, unable to answer. His amber eyes flicker between mine, waiting for me to answer.

As if he senses something, Noah lets go of my hand. He looks away and says, "I know it..." He breathes out. "...but I just think we should talk"

I look away, too, as I reply, "Okay, let's talk later."

***

"You got me to the old recreational park?" I ask him, looking around the park.

The park still looks beautiful as it does with lilies lined up on its edges. I don't why the builder chose lilies but, honestly, it gives the field a very refreshing look. After the municipality made another Rec center, just two streets away from there.

"Well, don't you like some peace?" Noah says as I look happily around, greeting old couples who are sitting on the bench. The place isn't so crowded it used to be, but I guess, I like it this way.

"Ah, I love peace," I say, jumping a bit. When Noah chuckles, I look away, embarrassed. "Well, pfft, whatever, it is okay"

"As you say, Bella," He holds out his hand, looking at me. "Let's sit?"

I eye his hand—It is really, really big. What's the thing Alyssa says about big hands—or, is it big feet? I look at his feet—huge, again.

"Are you seriously checking out my hands and feet?"

My eyes snap to Noah who is looking back at me with confusion and an underlying amusement.

"No," I draw out, pushing away his hand. I go and sit on a bench, saying, "I don't have some weird fetish."

"I would believe it when I see it," He replies, sitting on the opposite end of the seat.

We stay silent for five minutes and fifty-six seconds as I look up at the huge chunks of clouds floating over my favorite blue sky. The light breeze flows, making my hair fly upon my face in rhythm with birds chirping slowly. I like spring, even though it isn't winter – my favorite season.

"Bella?" Noah calls me. I look at him as he is looking back at me. "About yesterday, I don't know what came over me and I said those words to you... I just didn't mean to hurt you, that's it."

I look down on the grass for thirty-three seconds, before looking back at him. I will be lying if I say I wasn't shocked a bit seeing Noah nervous as he continues to tap on the rest, but his eyes look confident with honesty.

"If anything, I am sorry for...you know... but," I gulp, looking away. "I have to admit both of us were right in a way."

"That," He nods. "even I can admit."

Just then, a soccer land near the bench. I look up and find four guys, looking back at us.

"Kick the ball, please." One of them says. Before Noah can proceed to kick it, I stop him and look back at them.

"We will if we can play with you," I say to them. They look at each other, uncertain. "More the merrier?" I try to be convincing.

Noah raises his eyebrows, looking at me. Before he can say anything to me, one of them, says to us, "Yeah, sure. Come on."

We walk towards them as they look at us with smiles. One of them smirks, not the way Noah does, looking at me.

"So, pretty girl, you sure you want to play with us?" he asks. I roll my eyes, looking back at him. "We are really aggressive."

"This girl has no boundaries," Noah says, chuckling. I give him a glare as another guy playfully shoves the former, before looking back at me with a smile.

"I think he means we might just get distracted by some prettiness, here."

"Right..." I nod. "Are we gonna play or give each other compliments? If the former, let me tell you I have no compliments for you."

"Yeah, let's pla—"

"PJ! She asked if she can play soccer with us, not play kind of play with us." The one with blue eyes says. He turns to me with a smile and introduces himself, "Ben"

"Iris," I say, finally.

"Noah" Noah introduces himself, giving a nod.

Ben smiles, before saying, "Don't mind these idiots, by the way."

"Consider them forgotten," I say and Noah coughs, trying to hide his smile. he raises his eyebrows when he catches me looking at him. "What?" I ask him.

He shakes his head, mumbling, "nothing"

Ben chuckles, shaking his head. "So, let's get this game started. Well, you know me, they are Lucas, PJ, and Riley, over there."

Riley just smiles looking at me as I smile back.

"So, let's divide the teams, then," PJ says, looking at all of us. Within a minute and fifty-four seconds, the teams are decided. Riley, Ben, and I as one team while PJ, Lucas, and Noah in another.

I know it shouldn't be weird but Noah has a blank expression for three seconds as he looks at all the guys and then back at me. As I go along with my team, Noah stops me with a smirk on his face (this is his personal best; four seconds and mood changes). I roll my eyes, involuntarily.

"Bella let's make this interesting for us. The person who scores the most goals between us is the winner. The loser has to do what the winner says."

"You know what? Okay. You will do what I say you to."

"Oh Bella, overconfidence is an ugly flavor on you." He remarks.

I open my mouth to come up with a retort but guess what, I can't. "Ugh, yeah, whatever." I huff as we both go our separate ways.

Fifty-seven minutes and ten seconds of tremendous running and intense arguing, the teams are tied with 18 goals each. Noah smirks at me as he shoots the last goal into the net.

Noah: 6 goals; Iris: 6 goals. Damn, I have to win this.

"Hey, Iris," Riley calls me out. I look at him, breathlessly. "So, is there some competition going on between you and Noah?"

"Kinda. Yeah." I reply, looking at Noah as he gives high fives to PJ.

"I can help you out to win that and this game; what do you say?" I look at him with a smile as he explains his plan.

"We are so gonna win this!"

"Is there some plan brewing, I see?" Ben comes and wraps his arm around our shoulders. We both look at each other and then say to Ben, "Damn, yeah."

After a minute passes, Ben passes the ball to Riley. With PJ following him and Noah following me, Riley looks at me with a grin. Reaching in front of the goalpost, I look up at Noah, start running back slowly. He has a puzzled look but obstructs my way, without following me (bad decision, Noah).

Upon reaching at least two meters away from Noah, for a second, I look at Riley as he looks at me as if telling me that I can do it. I nod, subtly. He shoots the ball horizontally, parallel to the way Noah is standing.

His long legs are now at a good angle – wait, is that some wrestling position? Whatever, anyway.

I run fast, ignoring Noah's wide amber eyes. I slide along the surface of the field of play, between his legs, kicking the ball with enough force. Good thing, the grass is dry and I am wearing my least favorite color orange and black track pants.

In two seconds, I am laying on the ground, seeing the ball go into the net as the timer, Lucas had set, goes off. I flop down, cheering.

"Woo hoo!" I hear Ben yell out while PJ and Lucas go all 'damn' and 'I didn't see that coming'

"Yay!" I say with the same enthusiasm.

"Good one, there," Riley says as he holds out a hand for me. I get up from the ground, looking at the boys' expressions, trying to get the dirt off of me.

I look at Noah, smugly. He rolls his eyes, but I can see a hint of a smile on his face.

"Nice game, there," I say to every one of them. They smile at me as Riley comes forward.

"Yes, it was nice playing with both of you." He says to us, very formally. "You both play really good soccer."

"Thanks," We both say to him as all of them bid their byes.

"Damn, it made me feel like a kid," I say to Noah as I turn towards him.

"You are still a kid, Bella," Noah says, looking at me.

"I am not!" I say, defending myself. Okay, that came out like a kid.

He chuckles and says, "As you say, Bella. As you say."

"So..." I say, drawing out, happily.

"Yeah, yeah. You are the winner." He grumbles, rolling his eyes. Damn, he hates losing.

"Aw, you know what, I will keep my wish for later," I tell him, poking him. He looks at me with a genuine smile. We start walking on the path as—Wait a second.

"We have been here for an hour and four minutes and five seconds... why hasn't anyone called yet? I mean Caleb and Colt must have gone pretty nuts if they know I am with you—no offense to you, of course." I add, hastily.

He gives me a dry expression as if saying, 'yeah, no shit, Bella. Those two are hell-bent on murdering me with a butter knife.'

"Well, it is not just them," I tell him. "It is my—" My phone rings and I sigh, looking down at my phone. "It is the man calling me now—hey, Dad," I answer, picking up his call.

"Seriously, 'hey dad'?" Dad says from the other end. "Where are you? Why aren't you here yet? You promised me a totally fair rematch of Mario kart, remember?"

"Dad, you su—"

"I forbid you to say that I suck at it. You cheated," He argues back.

"I didn't cheat. Mom was there—she was the judge of it!" I say back and I hear Dad sigh on the other side.

"Well, it seems like we are going to do that later," He says. "Where are you and why the gang is suddenly crashing at our house?"

"The whole gang?"

"Yeah and answer my question, Iris Cooper."

"Geez, Dad. I am in the Old Rec Centre with Noah," I answer.

Noah looks at me, weirdly, when he hears his name. He pulls out his phone, a second later.

"Does this Noah guy have any ride?" Dad asks, doubtfully.

"Yeah..." I say, drawing out. Noah turns his phone towards me as it shows a message from Adi about us meeting at my house.

"Good then, get butt here, sugar cube," Dad says, cutting the phone a second later. I look at my phone, weirdly.

"I am not a sugar cube," I say, pouting. "Well, whatever, Noah, we have to—"

"The bike is on the other side of the park," He says and now, smirks. "Race till there?"

"You betcha," I say, starting to run.

"I did not—oh fuck—Bella!"

***

I open up the door only to see eight teenagers lying in the living room like it is their house. Mike and Adi eating up Doritos, after being dipped into three sauces. Victoria, Colt, Alyssa, and Caleb laughing and watching Nick and Tom fight over the remote as Peter Pan plays on television.

"You guys sure made yourselves at home," I say, dropping my bag on the table.

"What the fuck are you doing?" Noah says to Mike and Adi, making a face at the three-sauce mountain.

"Well, hello to you too guys," Colt says, getting up and giving me a hug. "You, sure, are getting into a hell lot of problems, nowadays," He whispers to me in Spanish.

"Yeah, I am so happy," I say to him as we pull away.

"So, did you both go on a date?" Victoria asks, looking at Noah and me.

"No!" Both of us reply just when there is silence among all others. Except for Adi and Noah, all of the boys still and turn to give Noah a hard look. Alyssa turns to me, raising an eyebrow, amused.

"Well, anyway, that is their decision to go on a date," Alyssa waves it off and changes the topic. "Anyway, I need you and Victoria to go to the mall with me for shopping tomorrow."

"Hell yeah," Victoria says, excitedly.

"Nope," I say, bored. "Damn, the mention of shopping in the mall makes me bored."

"I am sorry, let's go back to the topic about these two dating—" Caleb says, pointing between Noah and me. I glance at Noah who leans on the wall, amused.

"We are not dating, idiot," I say to him, scowling.

"Who is dating? Certainly not my daughter," Dad steps in, wearing a plain black shirt with khaki trousers. "Also, which guy has a death wish?"

"Noah," Adi says, excitedly.

"He is your best friend," Mike tells him and he shrugs.

Adi replies, "Well, yeah but I can enjoy him getting tortured before I become captain underpants to save him."

"That is the worst thing I have heard till now," Nick says, chuckling.

Dad looks at Noah (from head to toe, I must say) with a very 'I ain't the one you should joke with, mister' look but as look back at his face, he smirks. Suddenly, he looks like the young Steve Cooper I have heard about and seen in pictures.

"You are the owner of the beauty outside?" Dad asks him and Noah nods, curtly. "I have a Ducati Monster 1200 and the older version of Triumph too."

Noah raises his eyebrows. "The Ducati Monster 1200? That's a classic."

"I know but my wife says that's too dangerous to drive even when I am the doctor of the house," Dad says, coming near us as he gives me a hug.

"Boys and their toys," Alyssa and I mumble, together, and Victoria agrees with us.

"I am Noah," Noah introduces himself. Dad looks at me for a second before looking at Noah.

"I am Iris's dad," He says, smiling as Noah nods back at him. He looks at the room and the whole gang and sighs. "I go away for an hour only to enter a messy house."

"Your fault to leave it under the supervision of eight teenagers," I tell him as a fact.

"Sure, my fault," Dad says, before gesturing towards the kitchen. I nod, understanding.

"Okay, guys, go make yourself at home like you already hadn't," I tell all of them, giving a look. "We'll be right back..."

"Code red?" I ask as we go to the dining room.

"More like yellow," Dad says, looking at me. I sit on one of the chairs while Dad sits beside me. "I like that Noah guy."

"You are the first to say that," I tell him as he sits properly.

"Is he your boyfriend that you've not told me about? Is he?" Dad says, wiggling his eyebrows with a smirk.

My parents, both, had met Thomas when we were dating each other and, honestly, they weren't so fond of him. They were actually the main people supporting me during the breakup and they had their moment of saying, 'I told you so' a lot of times.

"Why? Why?" I give him a disbelief expression. "Why do people think that?" I groan just as I hear coughing near us.

We turn our faces to look at Noah, who is trying hard to stop a smile.

"This guy? I rather elope with an alien from Saturn," I say to Dad, pointing my thumb towards Noah as he sobers up.

"That would arise a new kind of species," Noah points out.

"Shut up," I grumble. "You are just jealous you wouldn't have an interdimensional romance."

Dad smirks, looking at Noah and then, at me.

"Are you trying hard to get?"

My father is clearly amused by my reaction as Noah raises his eyebrows. I say, "Oh my god! Dad!"

"What? Ask mom how many girls tried hard to get me because let's admit it, every boy likes a challenge," Dad says, casually, getting up. I look at him in shock and give Noah a look to stop enjoying this, entering the room.

"Dad, we are friends." I turn to Noah and give him a look. "Tell him, Noah."

"Tell him what?"

"That we—" I gesture between us. "—are friends."

"I would say more like acquaintances."

"Ouch." I gape at him.

"Acquaintances?" Dad narrows his eyes. "Is that a new word for dating now? I need to put that in my book of language now—yet to be published." He turns to Noah. "Will you buy that book?"

"No," Noah answers, honestly, after thinking for a second.

"Good, I approve of you."

"What?" I look at Dad. "He just crumbled the seed of our friendship to something so low."

Noah smirks as he looks at me, amused. "We are friends, Mr. Cooper."

"Oh, no more that Mr. Cooper," Dad tells him. "I hear it enough at work. Just call me Steve."

"Okay, Steve," Noah says.

"Mia told me about you. I am glad that Iris has got you as one of her friends." Dad glances at me for two seconds, before looking back at Noah.

Well, knowing Dad, whatever he says has a hidden meaning in it. I look at him as Noah nods in reply. "I actually wanted to see the Ducati."

Dad's eyes dance with excitement. "You just needed to tell me. I show off my baby whenever I get the opportunity," Dad says, leading Noah to the garage.

"Geez, Dad. I feel the love," I say to him, rolling my eyes. Neither of them, listen to me as they go into an animated discussion about motorbikes.

"Now, that's an unexpected friendship." I jump in my seat and look as Tom is opening the fridge to get the cold drink.

"For long were you there?" I ask him, shocked.

"I don't know but enough to hear the whole conversation," Then, he turns excited. "Want to create a volcano?"

"Hell yeah," I just let my grin answer.
