Mafia Kings: Dario: Chapter 37
Mafia Kings: Dario: Dark Mafia Romance Series
When we sat down in the parlor, the daggers finally came out.
âYou vouched for the Turk,â Dario said coldly. âI turned down his business proposal. Not an hour later, Massimo, Valentino, and Alessandra were attacked.â
âRegrettable, truly,â Fausto said. He sounded pained as he said it.
âWhy did you send a viper into my home?â Dario asked, his voice angry but controlled.
âIâm not so sure that he is the viper youâre searching for,â Fausto said. âAnd I would caution you against assuming it was the Turk who ordered the hit.â
âYouâre saying it was the Agrellas?â
âI didnât say that, either.â
âThe Turk is working with the Agrellas,â Dario said. âYou donât think itâs an extraordinary coincidence that the attack took place in their territory?â
âSomeone certainly wants you to believe the Agrellas and the Turk are behind this.â
âBut you donât believe they are,â Dario said contemptuously.
âNo.â
âAnd why is that?â
âBecause weâre working with him, too,â Aurelio spoke up.
Everyone in the room looked at him in surprise â then turned back to Fausto.
Fausto gave his son a reproachful look, then sighed. âYes, itâs true â weâre in business with him.â
Dario stared at him. âWhy didnât you tell me this before yesterdayâs meeting?â
âBecause I didnât want you to feel pressured by my decision.â
Dario narrowed his eyes. âI wouldnât have. Believe me.â
âMm,â Fausto murmured noncommittally.
âWhat exactly are the terms of your deal?â Roberto asked.
âAlways the head for business, this one,â Fausto said with a chuckle. âThe Turk wants to sell some of his wares in our territory, and he offered a healthy cut of the profits. I said yes.â
Dario glared at his uncle. âSex trafficking and drugs.â
Fausto made a face like What can I do? âBusiness is business.â
âNot everyone is as squeamish as you, cousin,â Aurelio smirked.
Dario glared at Aurelio. âAnd not everyone will whore themselves out for a dollar like you⦠cousin.â
Aurelioâs face showed barely restrained fury.
There was an instant crackle of tension in the room.
Adriano, Lars, and Massimo all leaned forward in their chairs.
Faustoâs men inched their hands towards the insides of their jackets.
âBoys,â Fausto said loudly as he gave Aurelio an angry look.
âIâm not your boy,â Dario snarled.
âNo, but youâre very new to your position,â Fausto replied. âYour father wouldnât have said ânoâ to the Turk.â
âIâm not my father.â
âThat much is apparent,â Aurelio muttered.
Before Dario could respond with another insult, Niccolo jumped in. âWeâve made the decision not to deal in certain things going forward. Thatâs all.â
âWhat, youâre a bunch of angels, now?â Fausto said contemptuously. âLast I checked, the authorities would hang you for all the other crimes you dabble in.â
âYes, well, thatâs why we own the authorities,â Dario said with a cold smile.
âWhich is why I sent you the Turk. You need to shore up your territory if you want to survive. You can offer him access to the police and judges, and he can give you a steady stream of revenue. Itâs a win-win proposition.â
Niccolo shook his head. âThe police and judges are willing to look away when it comes to gambling and stolen goods. They wonât ignore trafficking women and drugs.â
âSo throw them some more money,â Fausto said with a shrug.
âLet me be clear, Uncle,â Dario said. âI refuse to deal with trafficking women and drugs.â
âYou should go into the priesthood, then,â Fausto replied. âMaybe you could become pope. You do the âsanctimoniousâ part extremely well.â
âGentlemen,â Niccolo said, âthis has nothing to do with the most pressing matter at hand. Members of our family were shot at yesterday. We must retaliate.â
âOr youâll look weak,â Fausto said with a benevolent smile.
âExactly.â
The older manâs smile disappeared. âYou already look weak. The whole of the Cosa Nostra knows youâre struggling. The wolves are salivating over what theyâll do to you. Your territory is divided â â
âHalf of which went to you,â Dario pointed out.
âWhich is why I made a deal with the Turk,â Fausto shot back. âHow long can you sustain your current operations?â
âWeâre fine,â Roberto said. âBetter than fine, actually. We plan to expand globally into online gambling. In fact, we could be fully legitimate within two years.â
That was the first I had heard of the familyâs long-term plans.
I looked at Dario in surprise.
He smiled the tiniest bit and nodded almost imperceptibly.
Fausto wasnât convinced, though.
âYouâve been going on and on about this online gambling nonsense for five years,â he said in a bored voice. âTalk, talk, talk.â
âBecause Father never let me pursue it,â Roberto said in irritation. âBut Dario is.â
âLovely,â Fausto sneered, âbut you yourself said it could take two years. You still have a significant number of bribes to pay every month â a lot of judges and police captains looking to wet their beaks. Whereâs that money coming from?â
âItâs covered,â Roberto said, although he didnât sound entirely convincing.
âDonât bullshit me,â Fausto snapped. âI was your fatherâs consigliere for 20 years â I know the financials of this entire operation like the back of my hand. I know you have maybe six months left at your current levels of income. I sent you the Turk so you can prosper and grow. As of right now, youâre withering on the vine.â
Darioâs voice was full of contempt. âSo we should bend the knee to some foreign bastard who insults me in my own home? Just because dear old Uncle Fausto knows best?â
âAgain,â Niccolo said sharply, âback to the matter at hand. If weâre going to send a message, we need to know who to send it to.â
âIt wasnât the Agrellas or the Turk,â Fausto said with a sniff.
âAnd how do you know that?â Dario asked mockingly. âDid you ask them?â
âDid you ever find out about the Genoan?â Fausto pointed at Lars and me. âThe one your Swede killed in her fatherâs café?â
Niccolo clenched his jaws. âWeâre still working on it.â
âWhy is she even here?â Aurelio snarled as he looked at me. Then he smirked at Dario. âIs she your whore now? Maybe you thought you might want a blowjob halfway through the meeting.â
I flinched at his ugly words.
Dario put his hand on mine before he answered.
âShe survived a gunfight in the streets yesterday,â Dario said coldly. âWhich is more than youâve ever done, little boy.â
Aurelio immediately stood up, furious â
And every Rosolini brother bolted to their feet as well.
Lars even had his hand inside his jacket.
I was terrified, sure that there would be another gun battle â
âSTOP!â Fausto roared. âAurelio, sit DOWN, goddamn you! Weâre family, so fucking act like it!â
Aurelioâs face twitched with rage, but he sat back down.
Lars and all the Rosolini brothers did as well â but slowly.
âI talked to Stefano Agrella,â Fausto said. âHe swore on his motherâs grave that he had nothing to do with the hit yesterday.â
âSo of course you believe him,â Dario replied sarcastically.
âIâve done business with the Agrellas for 20 years. Iâd know if Stefano was fucking me. Heâs not.â
âWhat about the Turk?â
âI talked to him as well. He says heâs not involved, and I believe him.â
âYouâre taking his money,â Adriano sneered. âItâs in your best interests to believe him.â
Fausto shot daggers at Adriano. âAnd itâs in your best interest not to open your mouth since you donât know what the fuck youâre talking about.â
Before Adriano could respond, Fausto turned back to Dario. âThe Turk is doing business with me, so what possible reason would he have to enrage you? If he killed Massimo or Valentino â my own blood â he knows I would break off all business dealings with him. Not only that, but Iâd join you and go to war against him. The Turk is a businessman, first and foremost. Thereâs no profit in war â he knows that.â
âUnless he could take our territory for himself,â Niccolo said.
âIf he was going to kill you,â Fausto replied, âhe would have murdered all of you at the same time. Not just pick off two of you in Florence, enrage the rest of you, and start a war.â
All of the brothers were silent.
Even I had to admit that what their uncle said made sense.
Fausto shook his head. âSomeone wants you to think the Turk and the Agrellas are trying to kill you. Someone wants to blow up the situation. Find out who that is, and youâll find out who tried to kill Massimo and Valentino yesterday.â
âAnd Alessandra,â Dario said.
ââ¦and Alessandra,â Fausto agreed. He smiled at me⦠and a shiver ran down my spine.
