Mafia Kings: Dario: Chapter 40
Mafia Kings: Dario: Dark Mafia Romance Series
We spent the next few nights together like that.
Dario would come to me after everyone else had gone to bed â
And we would make mad, passionate love.
It would last for an hour or moreâ¦
Then we would talkâ¦
And do it again. Sometimes twice.
Afterwards, we would fall asleep in each otherâs arms until dawn â at which point I would make him leave before the rest of the house awoke.
I had begun to accept the situation. I looked forward to his visits every night â and my body hungered for his.
Gradually I stopped feeling guilty for what I was doingâ¦
Until Filomena brought it all crashing down.
I hadnât seen the old woman for days. It was like she was avoiding me.
At first, that bothered me⦠but I was so enraptured with Dario that I forgot about everything else.
Then I came back to my room after breakfast one morning and found her stripping the sheets off the bed.
The cold hand of fear clutched my heart when I saw her, but I forced myself to say good morning.
She didnât answer, nor did she look at me.
âI havenât seen you the last few days,â I said.
She still didnât answer.
Rather than force her to talk to me, I turned back towards the door. âWell, Iâll just let you finish what youâre doing â â
âWhy?â the old woman asked quietly.
I glanced back at her, but she still wouldnât look at me.
âWell, youâre busy â â
âThatâs not what I meant, and you know it,â she said. When she finally turned to look at me, there was immense disappointment in her eyes. âWhat would your sainted mother say, God rest her soul?â
I trembled as I asked, âAbout what?â
âAbout you becoming a mafiosoâs whore.â
I was shocked into silence.
âOr your father?â the old woman continued. âHow ashamed would he be if he knew?â
I couldnât stop the memory of my father pleading with Dario:
Don Rosolini⦠Alessandra is a good girl⦠she goes to mass every Sunday⦠sheâs a virgin, padroneâ¦
âDo you think he wants you spreading your legs like a slut?â she asked.
âYou donât get to speak to me like that,â I snapped, my voice shaking.
âSomeone has to. Youâve forsaken all common sense â given yourself to a murderer who will throw you away like a used tissue when heâs finished with you.â
âHe wonât â â
âHe will. He will, child, he will,â she said, and her face suddenly looked pained. âI know you donât want to believe it. Youâre young, youâre innocent, youâre in loveâ¦â
I flinched.
I hadnât ever said it â I hadnât even allowed myself to think it â
But it was true.
I was in love with Dario.
Which was why Filomenaâs next words cut like a knife.
âBut you donât know men like I do,â she whispered. âEspecially not these men. They take what they want and they donât care who they hurt. They certainly donât care about a young womanâs virtue or what they might do to her heart.â
My fatherâs words echoed in my brain:
Sir, your reputation precedes you⦠you are a worldly man⦠and you reap where you do not sow. My daughter is an innocentâ¦
Filomenaâs voice grew ominous. âOr what they might do to her soul.â
âN-nothingâs happened,â I said.
It was the most unconvincing lie Iâd ever told.
She laughed bitterly. âI change your sheets every morning. You think I canât tell you rutted in them like animals the night before? And I know who the animal is. He guards his territory like a wolf; none of the other monsters in this house would dare cross him. Thatâs how vicious he is.â
She walked over to me and grabbed my hands, imploring me. âChild⦠he doesnât care about you. Heâll use you for a momentâs pleasure, and when his interest fades, heâll cast you out⦠or worse.â
âGet out,â I said as I jerked my hands away. My whole body was shaking. âGet out.â
She looked at me with eyes full of pain. âYou can complain about me to your lover, which will probably get me killed. At the very least, banished and left to die penniless. I donât care. I was a mother once. You are like the daughter I never had, and it is because of the love I have for you in my heart that I tell you â â
âShut up,â I whispered, terrified of what she would say next.
âHe will never marry you,â she said softly. âIâm sorry, but itâs true. You will be nothing more to him than a whore. When heâs finished with you, he will throw you away⦠and he will laugh that you gave yourself so easily to him.â
Without another word, she turned and walked out of the room.
