Mafia Kings: Dario: Chapter 42
Mafia Kings: Dario: Dark Mafia Romance Series
I was quiet and withdrawn for the rest of the day.
Dario was preoccupied with business. He didnât ask me about my mood â if he even noticed.
But Niccolo did.
âWhatâs wrong?â the consigliere asked after pulling me aside.
âNothing,â I mumbled.
âYouâre not tired of being cooped up, are you? We canât take you out again for a while, not after what happened in Florence.â
âIâm fine. Iâm just⦠feeling down, thatâs all.â
âAlright,â he said, still looking concerned. âLet me know if you need anything.â
Later in the morning, I went to the kitchen to see Caterina. If anyone could cheer me up, it would be her.
âHey, Grumpy,â she said playfully. âWhy so blue?â
I didnât want to tell her what Filomena had said, but I did want to ask her some things.
âWhen we first met, you said all Rosolini men were dogs.â
She looked at me and put her hands on her hips angrily. âDid Don Rosolini cheat on you?!â
âNo!â I said in shock.
âOh,â she said with a confused look. ââ¦then why did you ask?â
âI just wanted to know what you meant.â
She laughed. âWhat do you think I meant? All the Rosolini men are dogs. Pretty self-explanatory.â
âSo everything thatâs going on with you and Valentinoâ¦?â
She shrugged. âItâs fun, but come on â I know what it is. There arenât any glass slippers at the end of the story.â
Her flippant manner made me feel even worse. âSo⦠me and Darioâ¦?â
âOh, sweetieâ¦â Caterina reached out and held my hands. âEnjoy it for what it is: banging a really hot, powerful man, and all that goes along with it.â
I was repulsed by her words.
âWhat, like being kept prisoner?â I asked bitterly.
She tilted her head to one side. âYouâve really fallen for him, havenât you?â
I jerked my hands away from her. âNo!â
âThen why are you so upset?â
âIâm not!â
âCouldâve fooled me.â She sighed and gave me a half-hearted smile. âLook, the story ends in one of two ways. Either we get tired and try to move on, and they let us or they donât â because, letâs face it, these are men who donât like being told âno.â
âOr they get tired and move on, no matter how we feel about it. And thatâs that. So⦠carpe diem and all that bullshit. Seize the day. Enjoy what youâve got while youâve got it.â
I stared at her. âWhat about the future?â
âWhat about it?â
âWhat about getting married?â
Cat touched my cheek sadly. âWhen it happens⦠it wonât be to a Rosolini.â
