Twenty-one - Nineteen Ninety
The Witch And His Wolf // Kai Parker
Nineteen Ninety
It was fifteen months later and Abbie sat on a bench in a park reading the newspaper. 'Police stops search missing teenagers' the headline wrote. Abbie sighed of relief she thought the police were never going to stop. She had been the number one suspect of the disappearance of Carrie and Lisa, the girl Abbie drained. They questioned Abbie many times, but her compulsion kept them at bay. At school, there even began spreading rumors that Kai and Abbie were serial killers.
Kai walked up to the bench and sat next to her. He had two Pepsis in his hand. Kai quickly peaked at the newspaper's headline. "I guess they finally gave up." Abbie closed the paper, "I would too. They had no bodies or any evidence. Not even a single lead." He smirked, "Yeah, thanks to your compulsion and my experience in hiding corpses." He gave one of the Pepsis to Abbie and opened up the other one. "So, did you apply for any colleges yet?" he asked and took a big sip from the Pepsi. "No, I'm not sure. Since you're not going I just don't see the point. I'm an immortal seventeen-year-old I could go anytime I want," she explained. Kai agreed, "Not like there is any point in your degree, you could just compel people if you need a degree for something."
"I still don't understand why you're not going. Imagine how much fun we'd have at college together," she looked down at her feet and took a sip from her Pepsi. "I have things to do. People to murder, you know the usual. Who else will terrorize the community with us not around?" he semi-joked. Abbie grinned, "You're so right. Without us no one will be murdered, we can't let that happen!"
Abbie suddenly remembered that they hadn't long before they had to head back to school. She looked at her watch and noticed lunch break was almost over. "Shit, we're late, and I haven't even drunk blood yet!" She looked around her, there were too many people around that could potentially see her. "Don't worry," Kai said and turned to Abbie. He held her face and began kissing her. She softly bit his lip and sucked the blood. They had done this before. It was an easy way of getting blood in public. They stopped and quickly wiped off the blood. Then, began walking back to school. The park wasn't too far from the school building, so they weren't awfully late. But, the hallway was already empty.
While walking to class Abbie peaked into the principal's office. There she saw two police officers talking to the principal. She listened to what they were saying with her vampire hearing. "Two of my students are missing and one was found dead more than a year ago, and you're telling me you're going to stop investigating!" the principal exclaimed. "I'm sorry, sir, there is just not much we can do." One of the officers told the principal. Abbie turned to Kai, "I have to go to the bathroom. You can go to class I'll be there shortly." Kai nodded and continued walking to class. Abbie patiently waited behind a wall until the two officers were gone. She then walked to the office and knocked on the door.
"Come in," the principal said. She opened the door, which revealed the principal sitting behind his desk. He had a worried look on his face. It looked like he was going through a bunch of papers. "You're Abigail, right?" he asked and looked up at her. "Yes," she said and sat down opposite of him. "Can I help you?" Abbie nodded. She looked deeply into his eyes and said, "You're not going to worry about Brian Cooper, Carrie Cooper, and Lisa Harding anymore. You will support the fact the cops are shutting down the investigation. If anyone asks you about them, you will say you don't know much about them." The principal intensely listened and nodded. She smiled and walked out of the office. If Carrie taught her anything was that she should not let small things become a big problem.
While walking back to class she passed the bathroom where Harmony walked out. "Hey, how are you?" Abbie asked. "Good and you?" harmony said and dried her wet hands on her pants. "Me too, did you apply for college yet?" Harmony immediately lit up, "Yes, to the University of Portland I have a high chance of getting accepted there! And you?" Abbie smirked, "Oh uh, I'm not sure if I'm going to college." They began walking further to their classrooms. "Really? You should also apply to the University of Portland if you change your mind. Then we can go to the same college!" Abbie nodded, "Yeah, maybe I will do that... Here is my class, bye," she waved Harmony goodbye and left to enter her class.
She was next to Kai whose seat, as usual, was free. "What were you doing?" he curiously asked. "Damage control." He looked at her confused but moved on, "You are coming to my house after school because there is a big spell I want to practice." Abbie nodded, "Sure. I have nothing to do anyway." The class started and Abbie drifted off in her mind. It was the third time this month he wanted to practice a supposed big spell. Why didn't he want to say what kind of spell he was practicing? Was he hiding something?
After school, Abbie stood in the car park waiting for Kai. He was unusually late and Abbie started getting impatient. Just as she was about to leave Kai left the building and walked to her. "Where were you," Abbie asked a bit annoyed. Kai raised his eyebrow, "Inside." Abbie sighed, "Yeah I get that, but what were you doing inside. You were taking really long." Kai walked over to the car and unlocked it. "Nothing important." He sat inside and Abbie followed. Kai finally got his driver's license after he turned eighteen. He got his own car and finally wasn't dependent on his sister Jo anymore. The car was a cheap black Ford Mustang. Sometimes it felt as if the car was going to fall apart while driving, but it did the job.
"We could have vamp-speeded to the house," Abbie mentioned. She sounded upset because she simply hated it when Kai was acting all secretly. "I know, I just like driving," he smiled. A silence fell upon them and the whole drive was mostly silent. A bit later they arrived and stepped out of the car. The big white house amazed Abbie every time she thought it was just such a beautiful house. Once they entered the house Abbie noticed that it was empty. "Where is everyone?" she asked. "My parents are... working, and my siblings went to visit my grandparents." Abbie nodded and looked around the house. "Why didn't you go too?" she wondered. "I didn't want to go. Mostly because I wanted to do the spell," he explained and began walking up the stairs. "Okay. Let's do it."
They entered his room. "So, what is this spell about?" Abbie asked. "Nothing much really. Just like last time, it's just a practice spell," he explained. He opened up an old closet and grabbed a grimoire, a few candles, and a lighter. The firelighter looked old and vintage. It had a pair of twins engraved into the front. "How old is that lighter?" Abbie asked. "Uh, I think about a hundred years." He placed the grimoire in the middle of the room and flipped to a specific page. He then surrounded the book with candles and lit them on fire using the lighter. Kai lowered himself to the ground and sat on his knees. Abbie did the same and sat next to him. He laid his hand on her hand and began siphoning."Phasmatos geminios da fortitudinem. Ex duabus fit una." Kai began chanting.
The flames on the candles grew. He kept chanting and siphoning at the same time. It began hurting and stinging a lot for Abbie. "Kai... Kai," she pleaded. She ripped her hand away from his grip. Immediately the chanting stopped and the candles dimmed. Kai turned his head to her. He had an angry expression. "Why did you do that?" Abbie crossed her arms over each other, "You were hurting me! I could have died if you kept siphoning me." Kai sighed, "I wouldn't do that. I wouldn't let you get hurt. It was just a big spell that needed a lot of magic."
"What even kind of spell is this anyway! I hate that you refuse to tell me!" Abbie was very frustrated. Not only with Kai, but the world. Recently, her mother had been looking sick and weak and refused to go to the doctor. It just put so much stress on Abbie. "I can't say what it's about. You know, secret stuff. It's honestly all boring anyway. You wouldn't miss it," he explained. "I'm sorry. We can do it again if you want," Abbie apologized. "No, we'll do it another time," he said and began cleaning up. "Do you want to go to the arcade?" he asked and put the grimoire back in the closet. "I can't, I need to go home to my mother." He nodded and let her go home.
Once outside Abbie vamp-speeded home. She entered her home and found her mother sitting by the coffee table going through papers. "Oh, hey Abbie come here! I need to tell you something!" her mother said after noticing Abbie. "What's up, mom?" Her mother had dark circles under her eyes. It wasn't from lack of sleep. She made sure her mom slept enough. "I have decided to move, and I know you don't want to move again, so I will move alone!" she happily told her. "Are you sure? Will you be able to do that alone?" Abbie asked concerned. "Of course, honey. Don't worry." Abbie knew she wasn't fine. She could deny something being wrong as much as she wanted, but Abbie saw right through that. "I'm moving with you," Abbie said without thinking about it twice. Abbie knew she would miss Kai, but she would call him as often as she could. She had to be there for her mother. Her mother weakly stood up and hugged her daughter.
