Faryal was standing in front of the mirror. She applied a peach colored lipstick and pressed her lips together. Her hair was neatly plated into a french braid, leaving a few strands hanging around her temples. She adjusted the black khadar dupatta on her shoulder and turned around.
Zohaib was sitting on the bed with Zahra beside him playing with her soft toy. He was putting on Zahra's tiny socks on her feet and then her shoes.
"Are you ready?", Zohaib turned his head towards Faryal.
"Yup", Faryal nodded. She picked up Zahra's woolen cap from the bag and put it on her head. Zahra kept smiling.
"Aray waah Zahra, itni zyada khushi aj tayar honay ki", Faryal pulled her cheek lightly.
"If her Ammi will get ready like that, won't she think we are taking her outside", Zohaib stated.
"Nope Zahra, guests are coming. How can we go outside beta", Faryal said to Zahra.
"We should join everyone, guest will be arriving soon", Zohaib said, he got up from the bed with Zahra in his hands. Faryal nodded and they went downstairs.
"Uzair go and get dressed up", Tayi Ammi voice came as they entered the living area.
"I'm already dressed up", Uzair frowned.
"What is this, wear something nice", Tayi Ammi said.
"Mama should I wear a sherwani and sit on a horse to welcome them", Uzair replied in an annoyed tone.
"This boy won't understand how important your first impression should be", Tayi Ammi shook her head and went back to the kitchen. Zohaib laughed. Uzair looked in his direction.
"Yeh tum dono nay jo muje emotionally black mail kiya hai na maaf nahi karun ga mein (I won't forgive you both for emotionally blackmailing me)", he said to Faryal and Zohaib. Zohaib laughed again which annoyed him even more.
"The guests are here", Nadia baji announced. The whole family went out to welcome them.
Roshni was there with her parents, younger brother Aashir and cousin Haya. Amma Jan invited them inside the house. Everyone settled down in the living area.
"How was the journey", Baba jan initiated the conversation.
"It was lovely, especially the weather", Roshni's father replied. "Thank you for inviting us here".
Faryal sat down on the sofa and Zahra started wailing and winning.
"Shh Zahra", Faryal said lovingly and got up. Zahra looked at her Ammi and blinked her tears filled eyes a few times. Zohaib was about to sit down on the sofa, Zahra looked at him and let out a high-pitched scream. He quickly straightened up and walked up to them.
"Come Zahra", he moved his hands forward but she tightly held her Ammi and started crying. Faryal rubbed her back to coax her but she wasn't ready to listen to her parents.
"What happened to her?", Mom asked worriedly. "She was so happy a few minutes ago, what happened to her now". All the eyes shifted towards them.
"I guess Zahra thought we were taking her outside. That's what she does whenever Faryal gets ready", Zohaib said.
"Then take her somewhere, don't make the poor child cry like this", Dadi jan said. Faryal shifted her gaze towards the guests.
"Don't worry, we are here", Meesha assured her. Faryal smiled.
Zohaib glanced at Uzair, he signaled him not to leave him alone in that situation.
"Take her somewhere", Mom said. Zohaib looked back at Faryal. She nodded. They went outside and settled down in the car.
"Where should we go?", Zohaib turned his head towards Faryal.
"I don't know, let's wander on the road if that's what Zahra wants", She shrugged. He ignited the car. Faryal slid down the window and a cool gush of air hit her face. The sun was hidden by thick clouds. The mountains were filled with light fog, reducing the visibility.
Zahra was looking outside the window with a wide smile on her face. She squealed and laughed when the cool air hit her face, she was barely able to open her eyes.
"Enough of enjoying the cool air you will get cold", Faryal slid up the window and adjusted Zahra's woolen cap on her head.
"Zahra you are getting very naughty. Uzair chachu will be mad at us for leaving him there", Faryal gave her a tight kiss on her cheek. Zohaib glanced at them and then back to the road in front of him and smiled.
"She is stubborn like you... knows how to make us do things", Zohaib said.
"Look who is saying", Faryal replied.
After a few minutes of drive, Zohaib stopped the car in front of a cafe. "I'll grab something",
"It is not needed", Faryal said.
"That's why I didn't ask you. Keep the doors locked I'll be back soon", he unbuckled his seat and went outside the car. Faryal and Zahra waited for him.
A few minutes later Zohaib settled down in the car. His hands were totally occupied. He placed the cups on the dashboard.
"Look Zahra, what daddy brought for you", Zohaib showed her the LED balloon. Zahra's eyes lit up. She moved her hand forward to take it in her hands.
"Thank you Zahra's daddy for bringing this. Zahra loves it", Faryal cheered.
"And take this", he forwarded a khaki-colored paper bag. Faryal took the bag from him and opened it curiously.
"This is for me?", She picked out a fresh daisy floral crown and beamed with delight. She looked like a child in the candy store. He chuckled at her
"It's so beautiful Zohaib, thank you so much", she put it on her head. "I love it".
Zohaib smiled. "Now drink your hot chocolate before it gets cold", he removed the lid from the cup and handed her.
"Hot chocolate", she frowned. "How do you know it's my favorite".
He shrugged.
She took a sip and said, "Fineee, don't tell me". He smiled and started drinking from his cup, his eyes were fixed on Zahra and Faryal.
Zahra was playing with her balloon. She looked up at her Ammi, a frown appeared on her forehead, and then she chortled. Zohaib chuckled too. He captured their picture on his mobile.
"What happened?", Faryal wriggled her eyebrows in confusion. Zohaib turned the rearview mirror towards her. Faryal starred at her reflection, mouth agape. Her mouth was covered around by the froth. Zohaib cleaned her mouth with a tissue.
"Then you say you are not a kid", he said. "Pori billi lug rahi ho (You are looking a cat)". Zahra was gigling non-stop.
"Why did you take my picture?", she whined.
"Tit for tat",
"Even Zahra is enjoying it", he chuckled. Faryal blushed and averted her face away from him. She rubbed Zahra's tummy to stop her laughter attack "Easy Zahra".
"Let's go back, they will be waiting for us", She said.
------------------------------------------
"Did you talk to Roshni?", Zohaib asked Uzair.
"Hmm", Uzair hummed.
"What do you think?", Zohaib questioned.
"Just wait and watch", Uzair smiled mischievously.
"Bro, what are you up to? You promised Faryal you won't do anything stupid", Zohaib frowned.
"I am not doing anything, don't worry I know how to keep my words", Uzair assured him.
"I hope so", Zohaib sighed.
"OMG he is so handsome", Haya said dreamily. Mahum frowned she looked at her, then followed her gaze and froze.
"What's his name?", Haya asked. She turned her head towards Mahum and caller her name "Mahum?".
"Huh?",
"What's his name?",
"Huzaifa", Mahum replied. She shifted her gaze from Huzaifa to Haya.
"Ohoo H for Haya, H for Huzaifa...Waah", Haya rolled the strand of hair around her finger and then released it.
"What are you saying...bhai bolo usko (Call him brother)", Mahum let out a fake chuckle.
"Bhai? never. Yeh bhaichara tumhe mubarak ho. Itne handsome larkay ko bhai kehna mein gunah smjhthi hun (You keep this brotherhood to yourself. I would consider it a sin to call such a handsome boy brother)".
"How shameless", Mahum thought and shook her head.
"Is he engaged?", Haya questioned.
"No", Mahum replied.
"Does he have a girlfriend", Haya asked again.
"How would I know this. I mind my own business and I think everyone should", Mahum threw daggers at her. She was getting annoyed by her investigation.
"I can try my luck then", Haya smirked. Mahum snapped her head towards her.
"You better keep away from him Haya. He might be handsome but he is a very rude, bossy, and snobby person. Don't tell me that I didn't warn you. You will regret talking to him", Mahum warned her.
"Take it easy. I like such boys", Haya flipped her head. "I know how to handle him".
Mahum looked at her surprised, her mouth fell open.
"Let me introduce myself to him. Wish me luck", Haya winked and went away where Huzaifa was sitting.
"Wish me luck, my foot", Mahum mumbled in frustration. Her eyes were fixed on Huzaifa. Haya said something to him, he replied, and then she sat down on a sofa beside him. They were at a distance that's why Mahum couldn't hear anything. Haya was smiling and playing with her hair while talking to him.
"What are they talking about?", she frowned. "Let's see". She went towards them and took a seat beside them.
Haya was talking to him about business related stuff which Huzaifa was explaining to her very professionally.
"Haya nahi behaya naam hona chahye tha iska khulay aam doray daal rahi hai (Haya means modest, behaya means immodest. Her name should be behaya instead of haya. She is openly flirting with him)", Mahum gritted her teeth. "Aur is akhrho janab ko dekho kese usko smjha raha hai aram say (and look at this Mr.arrogant how he is explaining everything to her).
"You are such an intellectual person Huzaifa", Haya praised him. "Can you please give me your number, I mean you know I'm a business student and I might need your assistance in the future. Hopefully we are going to be a family now".
Huzaifa thought for a moment and then gave her his number.
"Thank youuu", she said in a baby voice trying to sound cute. "I'm dialing your number so you can save mine number too". She dialed his number, his cell phone rang.
"Please save it now, I mean you might forget saving it later", Haya stated.
Huzaifa nodded, did something on his cell phone, and then shoved it into his pocket. Haya smiled.
"You are exactly opposite to whatever Mahum told me about you", Haya stated.
"Mahum?", Huzaifa frowned.
"Pagal hogyi hai yeh marvaye gi muje (She is gone nuts. She is going to get me killed)", Mahum muttered. Terror rose in her heart. She opened her mouth to stop her but the moment her eyes met with Huzaifa she stopped.
"What did Mahum tell you about me?", he asked looking into Mahum's eyes.
"Ya Allah", Mahum mentally facepalmed herself.
"She said you are rude, bossy, and snobby person, I should better keep away from you", Haya said disinterestedly.
"Hmm", Huzaifa hummed. All this time his eyes were fixed on Mahum.
"But Huzaifa you are very sweet. I must say this.", Haya said.
Mahum stood up from her place and ran away. After that Haya kept talking to him. But Huzaifa, he was lost in his thoughts.
------------------------------------
Mahum was humming and applying moisturizer on her hands. She had successfully ignored Huzaifa all day, knowing the fact he would be mad at her for saying those things. She released her hair from the messy bun and laid down on the bed.
The only thing which annoyed her was that Haya was still there because Agha jan made them stay for a night due to the rainstorm in the valley.
"How can a decent girl like Roshni have such a shameless cousin", she scoffed.
Knock!...Knock!
"It must be mama. No matter how much I deny she won't let me sleep without drinking milk at night ufff", she groaned and went up to the door.
She opened the door and her light brown eyes met with the black ones. Huzaifa was standing in front of her with a stoic expression. Her eyes flew open and she quickly tried to close the door but to her misfortune he tucked his foot in between the door, proving to be an obstacle. She pushed the door using all her force but she couldn't close it. When she looked up his eyes were shining with amusement and his lips twitched up. The truth was he wasn't using any force, not even a bit but yet he was able to stop her from closing the door.
She left the door and ran inside the room after realizing that she won't be able to lock the door. He entered the room and closed the door behind him.
"Tumhe kuch andaza bi hai jo hurkat aj tum nay ki hai (Do you have an idea what have you done today?',
"Huzaifa please go", She said. She picked up a cushion and threw it on him.
"I'll go back, just give me an answer", he caught the cushion and took steps in her direction.
"I don't want to give any answer please go", she picked up a pillow this time and threw it on him. He dodged it and they heard the sound of breaking glass. They stopped. The shattered vase lay in fragments on the floor.
"Ya Allah, Mama is going to scold me for damaging uncle's property", she gasped. "And it's because of you Huzaifa".
Huzaifa ignored everything and strode towards her, she started running and jumping over the bed and coach.
"nooo", she shrieked and fell down on the floor suddenly.
She was lying on the floor, he quickly sat down beside her and worriedly asked "Are you okay?". He helped her to sit down and was worriedly looking at her.
"Mahum do something or he won't spare you", she thought.
"Are you okay?", he asked again.
She looked at her foot and then back to him. She grabbed her foot in her hand and dramatically said "Ouch... Huzaifa my foot...it's hurting so much".
He was about to touch her foot she screamed "No please don't touch it bohut dard ho raha hai mein batha nahi sakthi (It's hurting is so much, I can't even tell you).
"Can you walk up to the bed?", he asked.
"I don't think so", she faked a hurt expression. "But I can try...", she tried to get up.
Huzaifa didn't let her complete her sentence and picked her up in his arms.
"What the hell, utharo muje neeche (put me down)", She struggled to get out of his hold.
"If you didn't stop, I'll drop you on the floor right now", he said seriously. "And this time we will need a wheelchair for you".
She stopped struggling and he placed her on the bed.
"I'll call Zohaib Bhai to check your foot", he said.
"No", she replied quickly. He starred at her. "I mean don't disturb him. You will wake up Zahra too".
He sighed. "I'll bring the first aid box from uncle then. We can't leave it like that. Hopefully, massage and the warm bandage will be enough for it", he said looking at her foot.He went out of the room. She took a sigh in relief.
"Thank God he got distracted", she smiled. She hummed the song again.
After a few minutes, Huzaifa came back with a first aid box in his hand. She straightened up and put on a hurt expression on her face again.
"Move your foot forward", he said while sitting on the bed. He picked up a massage balm from the box, looked at her foot, and paused.
He moved his gaze towards her face and his blood boiled "wasn't it your left foot a few minutes ago?",
She gulped and realized she had forwarded her right foot. "No..I mea..n",
"You were acting. I just wanted to ask you a simple question but you", he narrowed his eyes.
"All that time you were lying Mahum", he raised his voice a little bit. She flinched this time, he was serious, extremely serious. "You know that's your problem, everything is a joke for you".
She got down from the bed. For the first time in her life, she was scared of him.
"Ainda nahi karun gi (I won't do it again)", she mumbled and took slow steps to go away from him. He fetched a deep breath to calm his nerves and stood up from the bed.
She kept taking steps, backward. She hissed when she felt something sharp flung into her foot.
"Mahum why did you lied to her about me", he asked in a composed tone.
"I don't know" she whispered to herself and kept going back. The blood was oozing out from her feet, leaving an imprint on the white floor. She was too numb to feel the pain.
"Look I...", his eyes fell on the floor and he stopped midsentence. He looked at the floor and then back to her.
"Blood", and the reality dawned upon him that her feet were bleeding. A tremendous pang swept through his chest. In quick steps, he reached towards her and grabbed her hand to stop her.
"Stop moving, your feet are wounded from the glass shreds", he said.
"Please go, I don't...", He placed a finger on her lips.
"Shhh Khamoosh (keep quiet)", he made her sit on the couch. He picked up the first aid box, carefully removed the glass shreds from her feet. She hissed but her eyes were fixed on the wall in front of her.
"Tum kyun itni pagal ho Mahum? (why are you such a nut Mahum?)", he asked while cleaning her wounds. His tone was soft, so were his eyes.
"I didn't lie. You are a rude and snobby person. Always bossing around. That's how you treat me.", she almost whispered the last sentence which he heard.
"You were not supposed to involve complete stranger into it",
"Wo behaya...",
"Mahum", he gave her a stern look.
"Behaya hi tou hai wo aur kya kaho usko mein. Ghalat naam rakha hai uska (She is shameless what else shoud I call her, they have named her wrong)", she gained her confidence again.
He didn't want to laugh but couldn't stop it.
"H for Haya and H for Huzaifa", she mimicked Haya.
"WHAT?", his eyes shot open.
"She said this, not me", Mahum rolled her eyes. "Mera dil chah raha tha usko moti moti galliyan dun, mar mar kar uska hulya bigharh dun is besharmi k leye (I wanted to curse her, beat the hell out of her for that shamelessness".
She took a deep breath "but I controlled myself because she was our guest".
"I'm handsome, you can expect such reactions of girls", he replied playfully. An amused grin flicked the corner of his eyes smothered in mirth. He was wrapping a bandage around her foot.
"No, don't consider yourself Gulfam now (Rose faced/ beautiful). It's just her eyesight is weak, and she is mentally paralyzed",
"Jealous ho rahi ho muj say (You are getting jealous from me)",
"Na..impossible. You don't how people are getting shameless these days. But you don't worry tumhri izat pay aanch nahi anay dun gi mein (You don't worry, I won't let even a single blot on your dignity)Â ",
Huzaifa gave her a quizzical look.
"She was openly trying to flirt with you. I knew she wasn't your type that's why I told her to stay away from you". she patted him on his shoulder with a tightlipped smile on her face. "I'll make her understand that she shouldn't mess with the Durranis".
"Okay, then what's my type?", he raised an eyebrow in amusement.
"I don't know", she frowned and thought for a few seconds. "And I don't want to know it. We may not get along but you are my cousin. If a boy will tell you these types of things about me won't you stop him?...that's what I did", she explained.
"tumhara kuch nahi ho saktha (you are hopeless)", he shook his head and chuckled.
She narrowed her eyes and said, " I am helping you and you are mocking me, tum ho hi behiss Huzaifa (you are insensitive Huzaifa)".
"Shukriya! (Thank you)", he teased her.
"You are pathetic",
"Pleasure is all mine",
"Tum intihayi darjay k bemurawat aur (you are an extremely unobliging and)" she thought for a moment, "aur mein kyun bathaon wese bi muje tum say baat nahi krni (and, why would I tell you, because I don't want to talk to you)".
"Ahan that's interesting", he laughed. She huffed and turned her head to the side.
They stayed silent for a while he was done with bandaging her feet but he kept sitting on the floor. The silence in the room was awkward.
"App q keh rahay thay tum usko? muje tou kabi app nahi kaha (App means "you" but it is used in a respectful or formal way) (Why were you calling him app, you never called me app ever)", she couldn't stop herself from asking.
"She is an outsider why would I talk to her frankly?", he replied.
"Hmm", she hummed. "Han, phir tou bohut acha kiya (Yup, you did great then.). She should know the boundaries".
"Do you want me to call you app too?", he looked up.
"No", she replied instantly. "I'm not an outsider why would you call me that".
"Hmm",
Huzaifa's cell phone started ringing, he picked it out of his pocket.
"Miss Haya", was the caller ID displayed on the screen. He turned his gaze towards Mahum, she saw the name and averted her eyes. She didn't know why but her heart sank.
He thought for a minute, put his mobile on silent mode, and shoved it inside his pocket.
He cleared his throat and said, " I'm not talking to her, it's just I couldn't deny her when she asked for my number".
---------------------------------------------
Zahra yawned and placed her head on her daddy's shoulder.
"She is sleepy, take her to the room Zohaib", Mom said.
"I was thinking that too, mom", Zohaib stood up. He glanced at Faryal. She understood he was asking her to come. She nodded and Zohaib went upstairs. Meesha observed both of them and smiled.
Faryal was about to stand up, Meesha grabbed her hand and made her sit again.
"Where are you going Faryal, I wanted to talk with you", she said.
"Nowhere", Faryal turned her head towards her. Meesha started a conversation but Faryal kept checking the time in between.
"You like him", Meesha said suddenly. "I'm not sure about love yet but you like him a lot I'm 100% sure about it", Meesha said.
"Why are you so sure", Faryal was surprised.
"It's in your eyes, and you know eyes don't lie ever", Meesha held Faryal's hands and smiled.
"I don't know what it is, jo bi hai bht muqadas hai (Whatever it is, it's sacred", Faryal said meekly.
"It surely is. I love how he is so attentive towards you. Your baba jan used to say you were his princess but Zohaib too treats you like one. I'm soooo happy for you", Meesha took her into her warm embrace. "Aur yeh tum log jo ankho hi ankho mein baatein krthay ho na, ufff That's the most romantic thing ever. (And when you both talk through your eyes). Faryal smiled.
Meesha backed off. "Go he was calling you. I'll sit with the ladies. Fahad is with Agha jan and I don't know why did Mahum want to sleep too early today. Chalo jao".
"Thank you Meeshu", Faryal kissed her cheek and went upstairs.
------------------------------------------------
Zahra was walking around the bed holding the edge of the bed.
"Zahra you aren't coming hun, so it's final?", Zohaib said. Zahra chuckled and took fast steps to move away from him.
"Fine, don't sleep", he laid down on the bed. "Let your Ammi come and put you to sleep tonight. It's her punishment for ignoring us". He said, his eyes were fixed on Zahra's movements.
The door of the room clicked open and Faryal entered.
"Zahraaaa", she exclaimed. "My baby Zahraaa". She went towards Zahra. Zahra smiled and started running again.
Faryal picked up Zahra in her hands and said, "Aray...you didn't sleep yet love". Zahra put her hand in her mouth and giggled.
"Uhu", Faryal took out Zahra's hand from her mouth and kissed it. "It's bedtime".
Faryal switched off the lights, the room was dimly lit by the heater. She laid down with Zahra in her embrace. Zohaib handed her Zahra's feeder.
"She didn't have it yet?", Faryal asked. Zohaib shook his head. Faryal put the feeder in Zahra's mouth and rubbed her back to put her to sleep.
Zahra closed her eyes. She was restlessly moving her legs. Zohaib sat down and started pressing her legs.
"She tires herself all day", Zohaib said.
"Yeah", Faryal smiled. In a few minutes, Zahra fell asleep.
Faryal removed the empty feeder from Zahra's mouth and placed it on the nightstand. She slowly placed Zahra's head on the pillow. Zahra was taking soft snores, her plump lips parted. Faryal softly kissed her forehead.
Zohaib covered Zahra with a blanket and laid down in the middle of the bed with his head popped up on the elbow.
"So gyi (She fell asleep)", Faryal smiled and looked into his eyes. They both remained silent.
"Aren't you sleepy?", he whispered.
"Not yet", she replied softly.
She got up from the bed and went to the washroom. She came back dresses up in Zohaib's sweatshirt and her tights and walked up to the window. The rain splattered against the window making the view blur. The raindrops came snaking down, leaving the trail of water all the way down. But they lived long enough to orchestrate a dance and create a symphony. She grazed her hand on the glass window, it felt cold under her hand.
"You like the rain", She turned around, Zohaib was standing right behind her. She hadn't heard him coming and she was a little startled to find him so close.
"A lot", she nodded.
"I have always loved those filmy moments you know...dancing and getting soaked in rain", she chuckled. "But neither I know how to dance nor baba jan would allow me to get soaked in the rain knowing how easily I get sick".
"What?", he laughed. She pouted, rose her hands in the air, and shrugged.
He thought for a moment and then said, "Will you have a dance with me?".
He moved forward his hand in her direction. She was surprised. She looked at his hand and then back into his eyes. He signaled her to hold his hand. She hesitantly grabbed his hand. He pulled her towards himself.
"I don't know how to dance", she murmured.
"Doesn't matter. You wanted to dance in the rain that's the least we can do to compensate", He placed her one hand on his shoulder and held the other one in his hand.
"Why are you so perfect", she was amazed. "Is there anything you can't do?", she asked softly.
"There are so many things you can do which I won't be able to do ever", he replied and started moving. She followed his steps
"You are just being humble", she replied.
"Zahra is growing up fast Ma'Sha'Allah", She said.
"Yeah",
"In few years she will start going to school and in no time she will be a teenager and then an elegant woman and...", she paused and her eyebrows wriggled. "And then she will get married and leave us". she gasped at her own words.
"No", he said quickly. "Zahra won't go anywhere. I won't let anyone near her".
"That's impossible, what if she falls in love?", Faryal asked.
"No, my answer will remain the same", he said stubbornly.
"Zohiab", she called his name hesitantly.
"Hmmm", he hummed.
"How does it feel when someone falls in love?", she asked meekly. "I mean another type of lo...",
"You mean romantically falling in love?", he raised an eyebrow. She nodded.
"You have never fallen in love?", he asked.
"No", she blushed. "What kind of question is this".
"You don't need to hide it, your secret will be safe with me. It's a normal thing", he teased her.
"I'm not hiding anything", she smiled, but her cheeks blazed. She kept her eyes fixed on his chest. A smile appeared across his face.
"Then there must be lot's of your secret admirers or let say heartbroken lovers",
"You are just exaggerating",
"How would someone know you and won't fall in love with you?", he murmured.
"You know me right?", she looked up.
He nodded.
"But you don't love me.", she said nonchalantly.
He felt something tug inside of him. He opened his mouth to say something.
"Look. It's that simple to understand", she smiled. He kissed her forehead.
Zohaib thought for a moment and said, "If it keeps you awake at night and still makes you dream. If it makes you weak in the knees and still becomes your strength. If it makes you restless and still gives you peace, it is love. Pure love. Because only love can be everything all at once". he rubbed his nose against hers. She closed her eyes, wrapped her hands around his neck, and pressed her forehead against his.
"And how does someone know that he or she is in love", she questioned.
"Your heart will tell you", he whispered.
He pulled her into a hug and she held him tightly. Resting his chin on her shoulder, inhaling her strong scent.
It's the way that you know what I thought I knew
It's the beat that my heart skips when I'm with you  ð¶
