DOM: Chapter 32
DOM: Alliance Series Book Three
âHow is there nothing?â I turn away from the screens Joey is manning and pace across the bare floor.
âIf the dumbass hadnât forgotten his phone at home, this would be easier,â Joey grumbles and turns to a different display.
âWell, his mistakes and troubles are over.â I grit my teeth.
The hits have been spaced out nearly a month apart. And other than our men dying of lead poisoning, thereâs nothing connecting the crime scenes. Theyâre not even using the same type of bullets.
Weâve been able to find the cars used for the first three, all stolen from random parking lots and all with tinted windows, so even when we find them on traffic cams, thereâs no way to identify whoâs inside.
But we canât find the getaway car for my cousinâs hit.
Joey is the best man I know at finding things, so heâll come through. But the waiting is killing me.
Every place weâve hit has been empty. Weâre always too late. And itâs getting really fucking old.
I run my hand over my hair.
I need Valentine to rub my head again.
I need Valentine to look at me with a smile again.
My fingers tap against my side, and then I pull my phone out of my pocket.
I hit send, then wait to see if she replies.
She doesnât.
I deserve that.
My phone starts ringing.
I stupidly expect to see My Valentine on the screen.
Itâs not her. But I still smile because itâs her big brother.
I let it ring while I walk across the mostly empty warehouse, away from Joey, to give myself some privacy.
âHello, King.â
âDom.â
It sounds like itâs killing him to be civil. And it makes my smile even bigger.
âTo what do I owe the pleasure?â I lean against the wall.
âCut the shit. You took my sister because you need something. Now what is it?â
I click my tongue. âNow, now. I didnât take anything.â Mostly true.
âBullshit,â he snaps. âThereâs something else fucking going on, and I want to know what it is.â
âI donât know what youâre talking about, brother.â I keep my tone annoyingly casual. âBut youâre welcome to ask Val.â
âSheâs not answering my calls.â
âAnd what does that tell you?â I taunt him.
King sighs. âJust tell me what you need. And if we can help you, then weâll help you. And then youâll send Val back home.â
My humor vanishes. âYouâll help because itâs what youâre honor bound to do. And Val will stay right where she is.â
âYouâre not keeping her against her will.â
I scoff. âThatâs fucking rich, coming from you.â
âYou tricked her!â King shouts through the phone.
The barb hits.
Though I donât think he really understands how. How badly I tricked her. How I set a trap made specifically for her. How I planned it all and kept her in the dark.
âI did what I had to.â I end the call.
I did what I had to.
