Warlords MC: Book 5 – Joker : Chapter 5
Warlords MC – The Complete Series
She frowned then went quiet as if contemplating it. âNow that you mention it, maybe? Two weeks ago, Grandpaâs attorney stopped by the house to look around. Jared had taken several paintings and other things out by that time and sold them off for some money to get him through until the probate was done. I was still in tears about Grandpaâs death, so I wasnât much help. He told me heâd have some men watching the place, so Jared couldnât do that again.â She shook her head. âI told him it didnât matter. Without Grandpa there, his things didnât mean that much to me. He gave me a funny look but I meant every word. The things Jared took and sold were only material things. They could always be replaced but Grandpa couldnât.â
âIf he had done that where were his men the night you were taken?â Jack asked. He looked over at his brothers. âSomething here isnât tracking.â
âWhatâs this attorneyâs name?â Ace wanted to know.
âStafford Twinning.â
âIâve heard that name before,â King announced to his brothers. His tone insinuated that maybe⦠he hadnât heard good things about the man.
âThereâs one thing you should know before you condemn Stafford,â Rowen stated. âMy grandfather told me no matter what happened, he trusted Stafford. He heard those rumors too.â She looked over at King. âI think I should trust my grandfatherâs opinion.â
âEvery man has his price sweetheart.â King growled.
âAnd whatâs your price?â She cocked her head at him.
King caught his breath and his eyes filled with rage at her question. âI should have said, some men, and no Iâm not in that category.â
âThen can you at least give him the benefit of the doubt here?â she asked.
King glared at her but didnât say anything.
She explained, âMy grandfather was a simple man, he made some mistakes in his life, but he always knew who he could trust and he also knew who he couldnât trust. It broke his heart when he realized his own son fell into the category of men he couldnât trust. Heâd known that for a while before he died.â
âGo back to the hunting cabin for a moment.â Ace frowned. âYou said your grandfatherâs body was never found?â
Rowen shook her head. âThe police did find an area where a fight or a battle took place outside the cabin. The ground was bloody and they found animal footprints around the area but no body was ever found.â She looked at him steadily. âWhy?â
Ace shrugged. âIâm not sure yet.â
Deuce paused and looked at her shoulder. âWe need to get that cleaned up again.â
Ace nodded. âOk, weâll let you do whatever it is you have to do. When youâre done, come out for breakfast. Iâm sure Charli will be done with it by then.â
Ace, Jack, and King left the room.
Deuce slowly peeled the washcloth away from her shoulder. âWhat on earth made you rip that tracker off?â he muttered as he studied the torn skin. âYou did more damage that didnât need to be done.â
âI didnât want it on my body anymore. I knew it would hurt but I just felt so dirty.â She shuddered. âWhen my grandfather died, I lost the only anchor in this world I had left. I felt so lost, I guess I still am.â
âStick with us Rowen, weâll figure this out and set things right,â Joker told her.
âDonât make promises you will regret please?â Rowen warned him. âIâd rather know the truth than be disappointed in the end.â
Joker gave her a look that spoke volumes. âStick with us, weâll figure this out and set things right,â he repeated his earlier statement.
âOk. Iâll trust you.â She laid her head on his chest.
Deuce snorted as he bandaged her shoulder again. âIâm going to breakfast. I suggest you guys get something to eat soon or youâll go hungry until lunch. Your brothers are pigs and wonât leave you nothing but crumbs.â
Joker chuckled, âHeâs right. Weâd better go get some food while thereâs still some to get.â
Rowen flushed and said, âShe fed me already. It had been awhile since I ate last, maybe a couple of days.â
Joker growled, âGrinder didnât feed you?â
She bit at her lip. âGrinder wanted to break me remember? He barely gave me food or water. Barley enough to keep me alive.â
âWell, we will be stuffing you full from now on. The cooking around here is not diet food.â He lifted her up in his arms and carried her out to the kitchen.
She shook her head and reminded him, âI can walk you know.â
âNope, you need to rebuild your strength first,â Joker told her.
âWell, itâs a good thing youâre so strong then isnât it?â she stated.
Joker stopped and looked down at her. âYou barely weigh a hundred pounds, if I canât carry you a few feet, then I should turn in my man card.â
She laid her head on his shoulder. âIâm scared,â she admitted finally.
Joker stared down at her as they were still in the hallway. âWhat are you afraid of?â he asked.
âIâm beginning to feel safe here, but I know Grinder is looking for me. Or what if Jared finds me? If he knows Iâm still alive, he wonât stop coming for me until he makes sure Iâm dead. Heâs got more to lose now, than he ever did before. He probably thinks Iâm on a slow boat to some other country by this time. If I donât show up at the probate court on the day weâre supposed to meet the judge, then he gets it all.â She shook her head and admitted, âI wouldnât doubt he had something to do with the cabin incident. He probably thought he could blame the wild animals for the hunting party being killed. The fact they couldnât find my grandfatherâs body works well for him, donât you think?â
âI do indeed.â Joker nodded. âYou donât really want the money do you?â
Rowen shook her head. âI could care less about that crap. Money never meant that much to me. My grandfather taught me to be responsible and how to run a household, to budget my time and money. So when I began working for a living, I could live on what I earned. I was proud of myself. I didnât depend on anyone, unlike Jared.â
âWhat do you mean, unlike Jared?â
âGrandfather set aside money for him every month. Jared claimed the old man owed him.â She shook her head. âBut month after month, those bills were getting bigger and bigger. I have a feeling Grandpa had enough and was going to lower the hammer on him.â Wiping away a tear, she admitted, âI think that was part of the stress Grandpa was feeling just before the hunting trip. Then for something like that to happen?â She looked up at him. âI think the families of the men who died are going to sue for wrongful death and I wouldnât blame them.â
âWhat do you think Jared will do with that?â
âI think heâll ignore them. Heâll put down any investigation and no one will end up with any answers. No one knows what really happened up there. He doesnât want anyone looking into the facts and that makes everything suspicious. If he does that, everything my grandfather worked for will be gone. He was an honest man but if Jared gets his hands on the money, heâll ruin everything his father worked a lifetime to gain.â
Joker sighed. âIf you donât think the police know whatâs going on then you need to have a little faith in the system. I donât think heâs as clever as he thinks he is.â
âI think I should call Stafford and let him know Iâm still alive,â she told him.
When Joker began to protest, she held up her hand. âI donât need to tell him where I am, only that Iâm still alive. I promise.â
âWhy do you want to tell him?â Joker cocked his head to one side.
âBecause I donât want Jared to win and I wonât let him ruin a good manâs name. My grandfather deserves justice, even if itâs from beyond the grave.â She shook her head. âWe canât even bury him, because we couldnât find anything left to bury.â
âIâm sure as long as you donât tell him where you are, Ace wonât have a problem with you calling him,â Joker told her. âIâm starving and I can still feed you some bacon strips or something.â He gave her a huge grin.
