Carolineâs life had always been tragic. Days like today, peaceful and comfortable, were few and far between.
She glanced out the window again. The rain had intensified.
It felt as if⦠my life would be like this weather, one moment bright and clear, and the next, a storm would rage!
After the tasteless dinner, David never mentioned Elizabeth. He elegantly wiped his hands, pushed back his chair, and lazily glanced at the harsh weather outside.
âSuch heavy rain,â he said. âWhat about the flowers in the yard?â
He didnât care at all about Elizabethâs wellâbeing.
Paul quickly replied, âThe gardener will be here first thing tomorrow to take care of it.â
âMm.â
David nodded, then walked toward the living room.
âMr. Ellison!â Suddenly, a security guard rushed in to report, âMs. Elizabeth is still begging for mercy. Sheâs completely soaked, but she refuses to leave or get up.â
âLet her be.â
Even Caroline couldnât bear to watch anymore.
It wasnât that she sympathized with Elizabeth, but she couldnât understand Davidâs coldness and heartlessness.
âAre you really just going to ignore her like this?â Caroline asked. âSheâs someone you once cared about, right? You can really just disregard her?â
David turned and shot her a glance. âIsnât this what you wanted to see?â
What, was she feeling sorry for her? She had wanted Elizabeth to suffer, didnât she? Elizabeth had been begging for mercy in the rain for so longâshe at least deserved to pay the price. Isnât that enough for Caroline?
âI just thinkâ¦â Carolineâs lips moved, but she hesitated before finally speaking, âOne day, youâll be even harsher with me.â
After all, he didnât even bat an eye when he ordered someone to break her hand.
David spoke indifferently. âThen youâd better behave and not anger me.â
At the entrance of the Ellison residence.
âMr. Ellison, Mr. Ellisonâ¦â Elizabeth was drenched, her eyes barely open, her hands bracing against the ground. âPlease, let me see you. I know I was wrong⦠I have something important to tell youâ¦â
She looked like a drowned rat, her wet hair stuck to her face, looking like she had just been pulled out of the
water.
âMr. Ellison! Mr. Ellison!â

Elizabeth shouted with all her might, her voice echoing through the rain, carrying into the living room.
Paul spoke cautiously, âMr. Ellison, if this continues⦠we might have a problem. If Ms. Elizabeth faints, what do we do?â
âThen take her to the hospital.â
âBut⦠Ms. Elizabeth seems to have more to say than just an apology. She keeps repeating that she has a very important secret to tell you,â Paul reminded him. âOnce she tells you, she promises not to bother you again.â
David, however, didnât seem interested at all.
A secret? What kind of secret could there be?
Last time Elizabeth claimed Caroline wasnât a virgin, and he believed itâwent to great lengths to verify it.
What happened then? Nothing.
Paul had no choice but to remain silent and quietly retreat.
Caroline wasnât in the mood to watch TV anymore. The sound of the rain outside was incessant, and the thunder roared.
âMs. Elizabeth, please go back,â Paul said, holding an umbrella as he stood next to Elizabeth. âMr. Ellison is determined. He will not see you.â
Elizabeth weakly said, âBut⦠but I have something to sayâ¦â
âMr. Ellison doesnât want to hear it.â
Elizabeth gritted her teeth. She had fallen so low, yet David was still ignoring her. It seemed like he was truly
angry.
She couldnât let Caroline continue to hold his affection. I have to find a way to win back Davidâs favor, and turn things around.
