For Caroline to humiliate him by putting such a heavy burden of betrayal on his shoulders was the greatest disgrace he had ever endured. He had always stood above others, with countless people bowing to him. When had I ever suffered such humiliation?
Caroline forced a smile, tugging at the corners of her mouth. âWell then, Iâll take my own life before you can make your move.â
The car fell silent, so quiet she could hear her own shallow breathing.
âIf I die⦠David, how will you explain it to Ms. Harper? Sheâll grieve for me. Do you really want to see her, at her age, bury her child? And when Ms. Harper arrived earlier, you could have told her I was carrying another manâs child. Why didnât you? Why did you keep quiet? Why didnât you reveal the truth?â
He shot her a sideways glance, his eyes brimming with murderous intent. âYou think itâs something to brag about, that my humiliation shines like a beacon? Should I announce it to everyone I meet?â
The fewer people who knew, the better.
More importantly, he didnât want Harper, in her twilight years, dragged into such a sordid scandal.
Davidâs plan had been simple. Deal with the child swiftly, then settle the score with Caroline.
But Harperâs unexpected arrival had completely disrupted his intentions.
Caroline took a deep breath and laid her cards on the table. âDavid, letâs not beat around the bush. Youâre a smart man; you know the truth of the matter. Even if you tell Ms. Harper that Iâm carrying another manâs child, you canât touch my baby because Ms. Harper wonât let you. Youâre well aware that I saved Ms. Harperâs life. We grew up together in the orphanage, and we share a deep bond. If I beg her to protect my child, sheâll relent. Besides, Iâm willing to divorce you and leave with nothing. Ms. Harper is a kind woman and a devout Buddhist. She wonât casually take two lives. So, David, whether or not you reveal the truth to Ms. Harper, Iâm confident I can protect my child.â
In truth, Caroline wished David would tell Harper the truth.
If he did, she could escape this monster, keep her baby safe, and no longer live in constant fear. But David had chosen silence.
He wanted to handle everything privately, to avoid tarnishing his reputation. He wanted all his hatred and anger to fall squarely on her, forcing her to bear the consequences alone.
So, since he refused to expose the truth, Caroline wouldnât drag Harper into this either.
She stillâwanted to be the pure, kind Caroline in Harperâs eyes.
âGood, very good,â David sneered coldly. âSo now youâre using my mother to threaten me?â
Caroline forced herself to stay calm. âYouâve driven me to this point.â
She was negotiating with David. Her chances of success were slimâso slimâbut she had to try.

to live. I donât mind to suffer, but how could I allow my unborn child to endure such cruelty?
To have to beg just for the right to live, with no guarantee of successâit was heartbreaking.

âThen letâs wait and see,â David said, stepping out of the car. âWhether you can use your little schemes to protect your bastard, or whether Iâll succeed in getting rid of it.â
