âIâm paving the way for you,â Samantha replied. âDonât worry, Iâll plan everything for you and make sure the path is cleared. But as for Mr. Ellison, when it comes to matters between a man and a woman, that part is up to you.â
Elizabeth felt irritated whenever this topic came up but didnât know how to respond, so she just said, âOkay.â
When Caroline returned to the Ellison residence, she realized she was still holding a childrenâs rattle.
She couldnât remember when she had bought it, feeling a bit dazed.
This thing definitely couldnât be seen by David, or he would fly into a rage.
Caroline looked around, thinking of hiding it when David came downstairs.
She was startled and quickly tried to hide the rattle behind her.
But she had forgotten that the rattle made noise whenever it spun, and her large movement caused it to clink loudly, impossible to hide.
Carolineâs heart raced in her chest.
âWhat are you hiding?â David asked lazily, looking nonchalant. âWhat is it?â
âItâs nothing.â
He casually sat down on the sofa and extended his hand. âGive it to me.â
Caroline didnât move.
He raised an eyebrow.
Reluctantly, Caroline took out the rattle and handed it to him.
âSo itâs this little thing.â David played with it carelessly. âDid you just buy this?â
âYesâ¦â
âYou went out just to buy it?â
Caroline had gone for a prenatal checkâup, worried that she might have hurt the baby yesterday.
But she didnât dare tell David the truth.
âI saw it in the mall and bought it on a whim,â Caroline said after a moment, âI thought it was fun.â
David dragged the word out. âFun?â
In the next moment, he threw the rattle straight at her face.

âYouâre quite invested in that b*stard already, arenât you? Your belly isnât even showing, and youâre already buying toys for him,â David said icily. âDo you take me for an idiot?â
Caroline bit her lip, wanting to explain but deciding it wasnât worth it.
He wouldnât believe her anyway.
She didnât even remember when she took it or how she ended up buying it.
At the moment, David looked at her with nothing but contempt, forcing her to tread carefully, as if walking on eggshells. There was no way she would have dared to bring a childrenâs toy in front of him.
âAre you dumb now?â David raised his voice. âWho are you trying to fool with this lifeless act?â
Caroline lifted her eyes to meet his gaze. âIsnât that what you want? The more miserable I am, the happier you are.â
âHowever, youâd better pull yourself together now.â
She frowned. âWhy?â
David snapped his fingers.
Two servants quickly approached, one holding an ironed long dress, the other holding a pair of fourâinch heels.
âGo change David gestured with his chin. âWeâre attending a dinner party tonight.â
Caroline immediately refused. âIâm not going. I think Elizabeth would be more suited than I am to go to a place like that.â
He smirked meaningfully. âNo, youâre the one whoâs most suited.â
A chill ran down Carolineâs back as she wondered what he was planning.
âI wonât say it again,â David crossed his arms. âI donât mind helping you change myself.â
Caroline bit her lip and reluctantly went to the wardrobe to change.
The dress was a bit revealing.
It was a spaghettiâstrap dress, and the straps were long enough to barely cover the front.
