Samantha knew she was pretending, but she didn’t call her out on it–because she was pretending too.

Now it was just a matter of who could put on the better act.

“Caroline, you only know half the story,” Samantha said “You think we sold you out for money, but the truth is, we were forced by Nash.”

Caroline’s eyes widened in shock. “You… You’re spouting nonsense! Are you seriously saying Nash forced you to sell my innocence?”

Samantha insisted, “That’s right!”

At that moment, Matthew finally snapped out of his daze. He understood exactly where Samantha was going with this.

After all, they had been married for decades–of course they had that level of tacit understanding!

He immediately chimed in, “Ah, Caroline, this whole thing is too complicated, too dark. We originally wanted to bury it and move on, but now that it’s come up again, we might as well lay everything out. Do you really think we’d have the guts to sell you for some money at the risk of offending the Ellison family? We had no choice!”

Caroline felt her entire body sway. She couldn’t believe it.

The Brooks family had clearly sold her out for money, yet with just a few words, they had twisted the story into them being victims who were forced into it!

Now they are the innocent ones? Unbelievable. Twisting the truth. Manipulating the narrative.

They were good at this–far better than she had expected. She had underestimated them.

Elizabeth added fuel to the fire, her voice dripping with sympathy. “Caroline you have no idea how much pressure mom and dad were under back then. Dad’s hair even turned white from the stress. But who could they turn to for help? On one side was the Ellison family–offending them was out of the question. On the other side Mr. Nash of the Newton family–we couldn’t afford to cross him either.”

Matthew sighed. “Caroline, you’re my daughter. Maybe not by blood, but Lraised you for over twenty years–I care about you. At the end of the day, this was my failure. I couldn’t protect you, and because of that, you suffered so much.”

“Dad, I understand.” Elizabeth comforted him. “Don’t blame yourself…”

Caroline stood frozen, her mind going blank.

She had thought that confronting the Brooks family head–on would at least force a stalemate–if she couldn’t win, she would drag them down with her.

But she never expected them to be so prepared.

But Caroline knew better.

He cared. A lot.

And he would definitely settle the score with her later.

“Mr. Ellison, this…” Samantha hesitated. “This is difficult to explain.”

“Speak!”

Samantha flinched and then deliberately turned to Caroline. “Caroline, don’t blame me for this, okay? I have no choice.”

Caroline shot back, “I have no idea what you’re talking about. Why do you keep putting on this ridiculous act?”
