Chapter 223 Havenât You Played with Me Enough?
Finished
âMy brain is fine, but⦠are you sure thereâs nothing wrong with yours?â Caroline asked, arching a brow. âI say so many things in a day. How the hell am I supposed to remember the very last thing I said?â
âIt wasnât something you said. It was the last thing I said.â
Caroline immediately shot back, âIf I canât even remember what I said, do you really think Iâd remember what you said?â
Davidâs expression darkened even more.
âIâm not wrong, am I?â Caroline put down her spoon. âIf you remember it so well, just repeat it to me now. Why are you forcing me to recall something I clearly donât remember?â
Whatâs the point of this?
David let out a cold scoff. âI wonât say it again. If you didnât hear it, then forget it.â
Caroline shrugged. âFine by me.â
She didnât care what David had said. Besides, if he refused to say it again, what difference did it make whether she heard it or not?
But her indifference made Davidâs face turn even darker, his mood plummeting into a stormy abyss.
With a sudden slam, he smacked his palm against the dining table. The bowls and spoons clattered, and some of the porridge spilled over.
Caroline blinked in surprise. âWhat are you getting all worked up for?â
Why is he acting so strange?
He narrowed his eyes. âDid you really not hear it, or are you just pretending?â
The car had been dead silent. Just the two of them.
How could she not have heard me?
And besides⦠she had only just closed her eyes back then. It wasnât possible for her to have fallen asleep so quickly.
Caroline let out a sigh. âWhat exactly did you say? Iâm asking youâjust repeat it. Or at least give me a hint, okay? Maybe itâll come back to me. David, Iâm exhaustedâphysically and mentally. Can you stop nitpicking over something so trivial?â
I just want to eat in peace. Is that really so much to ask?
Davidâs lips pressed into a thin, rigid line.
So thatâs how she sees it. My confession. My quiet, careful admittance of love. To her, it was nothing. Something so trivial, so forgettable. An insignificant little sentence, completely unworthy of her attention.
David suddenly realized⦠maybe he was out of his mind.

her. She must have put some kind of spell on me.
He abruptly stood up. âCaroline, donât expect to ever hear those words from me again.â
âOh, big deal.â
She couldnât care less.

Caroline always had a way of infuriating David beyond belief while leaving him utterly powerless against her. Noticing that he was still standing beside her, eyes sharp as knives, she casually took a bite of her bun, chewing slowly.
âIâm someone who barely has the energy to survive. I donât have the time or interest to dwell on anything else. You can call me insensitive, unromantic, or clueless about loveâI donât care. If you want to have fun, there are plenty of women out there willing to play whatever games you like.â
âBut if you really want to know the only thing you said last night that stuck with me, the only thing thatâs been echoing in my head ever since⦠Itâs when you told me that you were going to change the way you play with me. Thatâs the only thing I remember.â
Caroline let out another sigh.
âDavid, what are you even thinking? Havenât you played with me enough? What more do you want? How else are you planning to humiliate me?â
David raised a brow. âHumiliate?â
âYes.â She met his gaze directly. âOr torment, degrade, ruin⦠Take your pick.â
