“It’s rare that both of you are home today. I guess I picked the right time to visit,” Harper said, turning to David with a warm smile. “Come sit down.”

Caroline expected David to refuse. It was already midday, and he had an entire company waiting for him, undoubtedly with a pile of urgent matters to handle.

But to her surprise, David nodded. “Alright.”

He pulled out a chair and sat down–right beside her.

His presence was strong, his aura overwhelming. Caroline instinctively shifted, trying to put some distance between them.

David, however, casually stretched an arm over the back of her chair, leaning slightly toward her.

To an outsider, they looked like a perfectly affectionate couple.

Harper took in the scene with amusement, his smile deepening. “David, did you stay home today just to keep Caroline company?”

“Yes.”

“She looks a little worn out. Has she not been sleeping well? Something on her mind?”

“Yes,” David responded smoothly. “That’s why I decided to put work on hold and spend more time with her. Maybe it’ll help improve her mood.”

Caroline went quiet. How does he lie so effortlessly? And with such conviction, without even a hint of guilt.

Caroline couldn’t take it anymore and blurted out, “You’ve never stayed home like this before. The way you’re talking, you make yourself sound like some devoted husband.”

David didn’t even hesitate. “There’s a first time for everything. And after the first, there will be a second, a third, and countless more.”

“Oh, listen to you. You almost sound sincere.”

“Do I?” He leaned in a little closer. “Then should I sing it to you?”

David was staying home with Caroline today.

But did she believe his reasoning? Not in the slightest.

For a brief moment, something unfamiliar flickered in his chest.

So this is what it feels like–to not be taken seriously. To not be believed or cared about.

But he brushed it off.

Caroline opened her mouth to speak, but David beat her to it.

“There will be good news,” he said, his tone carrying an unmistakable promise.

To Harper, it was a guarantee–one that put him even more at ease.

But Caroline’s heart clenched.

Madam Harper has always treated me well–like her own daughter. Even now, with David in power, wealthy and influential, she never once looked down on me. Instead, she was the first to push for our marriage, never caring about my background or status. She meant well. On the surface, this marriage should have been a good match, a lucky opportunity.
