Who am I bothering?
Caroline turned her head for a quick glance and was instantly speechless.
It was David.

He had instructed the driver to trail behind her at an infuriatingly slow pace, not too close, not too far.
And as for himself, David sat in the backseat, the window rolled down, watching her with an air of effortless elegance and authority.
When their eyes met, he gave her a silent look, signaling for her to get in the car.
Caroline shook her head and kept walking.
But the RollsâRoyce continued following her.
âCaroline, get in,â David commanded. âDonât make me say it twice.â
âMr. Ellison, I appreciate the offer, but someone like me isnât suited to ride in such a luxurious car. Iâll just take the sentiment, thanks.â
âI told you to get i
Caroline tilted her head toward him. âIf I step out of a RollsâRoyce at the entrance of Ellison Group, who knows what kind of rumors will start flying around the company?â
David replied evenly, âIf you donât get in, Iâll announce your identity as Mrs. Ellison right now.â
âYou!â
How despicable! Did he really just pull that card?
âI donât mind making it public,â David continued, resting his hand on the car window. âIn fact, from today onward, you can ride to work with me every day. And back home, together.â
Caroline was speechless. I donât need that, okay?
She had never won an argument against David. But that didnât mean she was about to let him strongâarm her into getting into the car.
As Caroline wavered, caught in indecision, David had already stepped out.
âHey, what are you doing?â She instinctively took a step back.
He closed the distance in three swift strides and, without a word, scooped her up into his arms.
The driver, wellâtrained and perceptive, immediately opened the back door, ready for David to carry Caroline inside.
Caroline clenched her teeth. âDavid, are you deliberately making my life difficult?â
âYouâre the one making this complicated.â

Inside, David and Caroline sat on opposite ends of the backseat, a distance between them as vast as an
ocean.
Caroline was the first to break the silence. âWhy did you stop me from telling Ms. Harper the truth today? I couldâve convinced her. We could get divorced and finally be rid of each other.â
âI told you. Because you want the divorce more than I do.â
âWhy donât you want it anymore?â Caroline asked. âDid you actually start tolerating me after all this time?â
David responded lazily, âSomething like that.â
âWell, I still canât tolerate you.â Caroline shot back. âAnd if the day ever comes when you want the divorce more than I do, I wonât cooperate. Iâll even get Ms. Harper on my side. Letâs see what you do then.â
Suddenly, he sat up straight and leaned toward her. âThe more you look at me, the more youâll get used to me.â
Caroline had to resist the urge to slap that smug face of his.
Instead, she exhaled sharply. âDonât forget, Iâm carrying a child that isnât yours, and I intend to keep it. That will always be the thing that stands between us.â
Silence filled the car.
Caroline thought, As expected, this is the one issue weâll never get past.
At the mere mention of this, the atmosphere instantly turned iceâcold.
She hadnât expected David to break the silence moments later, his voice calm yet piercing. âCaroline, what will it take for you to believe that I never lied to you, that I can give you a child?â
