Caroline tilted her head toward him. “If I step out of a Rolls–Royce at the entrance of Ellison Group, who knows what kind of rumors will start flying around the company?”

David replied evenly, “If you don’t get in, I’ll announce your identity as Mrs. Ellison right now.”

How despicable! Did he really just pull that card?

“I don’t mind making it public,” David continued, resting his hand on the car window. “In fact, from today onward, you can ride to work with me every day. And back home, together.”

Caroline was speechless. I don’t need that, okay?

She had never won an argument against David. But that didn’t mean she was about to let him strong–arm her into getting into the car.

As Caroline wavered, caught in indecision, David had already stepped out.

“Hey, what are you doing?” She instinctively took a step back.

He closed the distance in three swift strides and, without a word, scooped her up into his arms.

The driver, well–trained and perceptive, immediately opened the back door, ready for David to carry Caroline inside.

Caroline clenched her teeth. “David, are you deliberately making my life difficult?”

“You’re the one making this complicated.”

Caroline was the first to break the silence. “Why did you stop me from telling Ms. Harper the truth today? I could’ve convinced her. We could get divorced and finally be rid of each other.”

“I told you. Because you want the divorce more than I do.”

“Why don’t you want it anymore?” Caroline asked. “Did you actually start tolerating me after all this time?”

David responded lazily, “Something like that.”

“Well, I still can’t tolerate you.” Caroline shot back. “And if the day ever comes when you want the divorce more than I do, I won’t cooperate. I’ll even get Ms. Harper on my side. Let’s see what you do then.”

Suddenly, he sat up straight and leaned toward her. “The more you look at me, the more you’ll get used to me.”

Caroline had to resist the urge to slap that smug face of his.

Instead, she exhaled sharply. “Don’t forget, I’m carrying a child that isn’t yours, and I intend to keep it. That will always be the thing that stands between us.”

Silence filled the car.

Caroline thought, As expected, this is the one issue we’ll never get past.

At the mere mention of this, the atmosphere instantly turned ice–cold.
