“You said you didn’t want it. You told me yourself to get rid of it first thing tomorrow morning,” David repeated Elizabeth’s own words back to her. “So why are you changing your mind now?”

Elizabeth clenched her fists tightly, her mind racing for an explanation.

She never expected David wouldn’t want this child.

This was completely different from what she had anticipated!

After a moment of thought, Elizabeth answered, “I can accept that you don’t want this child for the sake of your career, family, or reputation. But I can’t accept that you want to get rid of our child because of Caroline!”

“Caroline hasn’t said anything yet.”

“Do you even need to ask her?” Elizabeth shouted angrily. “She’s probably dying for me to have a miscarriage so that her position as your wife’s won’t be threatened!”

But David simply curled his lips into a faint smile–a smile tinged with bitterness.

“Maybe… she actually wants you to keep it.”

Elizabeth didn’t even think before retorting, “That’s impossible!”

“It just goes to show that even though you’ve been sisters for twenty years, you don’t really understand her.”

Even David could guess what Caroline’s reaction would be.

She had always wanted freedom, always wanted a divorce. Now that Elizabeth was pregnant, her chance… had come.

She had a soft heart for many people, but when it came to him, she was ruthless.

He turned to leave without hesitation, never once sparing a glance at her abdomen.

“I will compensate you.”

“Compensate me with what? Money? Shares?”

“Everything except for my heart and myself,” David replied. “Think carefully about what you really want.”

He walked to the door, reaching for the handle.

“Oh, by the way,” he said, his voice calm as if he had just remembered something. “About the drugging incident, I believe it wasn’t you, and I won’t pursue it any further. As for your parents… I’ll let that go as well. But Elizabeth, let me tell you one thing!”

David turned around, his gaze locking onto hers.

“I can forgive the past, but from now on, you need to learn to watch your words and actions.”

“Mr. Ellison! Mr. Ellison!”

“I will do everything I can to meet your needs. And after that, we will have nothing to do with each other.”

With a loud bang, the door slammed shut. David left without looking back. Letting the Brooks family off the hook–that was part of his compensation to Elizabeth.

And leaving the fate of Elizabeth’s child in Caroline’s hands–that was his way of showing his sincerity, proving how much he cared about this relationship.
