âWhat a waste,â Caroline muttered instinctively.
She had bought it from someone earlier. It tasted awful, but it was better than starving. And now, David had just tossed it like it was nothing.
Whatever. At least she had managed to take a few bites.
Clapping the crumbs off her hands, Caroline asked, âIs Elizabeth still trying to kill herself? Youâve been in there for so longâlooks like you managed to calm her down?â
David turned and walked away without bothering to say a single word.
Caroline followed after him.
Noticing how she quietly trailed behind him, he suddenly snapped, âJust standing around waiting? You didnât think to push me to hurry up?â
âWould it have made a difference?â
She didnât see the point in wasting her breath. And she certainly didnât want to see Elizabeth smugly basking in victory.
So she had simply waited outside.
Davidâs pace quickened, his entire posture radiating anger.
Caroline was completely baffled. What the heck is he mad about now? Did he expect me to barge into the hospital room and argue with Elizabeth just to amuse him? Is he annoyed that I have quietly stayed out of the way? Didnât he like obedient, gentle, wellâbehaved women? Well, today, I have played that role perfectly. Oh, I see.

room.
He had only come to the hospital to pick up his medical report, but it seemed like he was about to uncover something far more interesting.
Inside the Hospital Room, Elizabeth had completely shed her earlier weak and pitiful act.
Now, she was reclining against the bed, leisurely eating fruit.
Her complexion was rosy and glowingâhardly the look of someone in distress.
âMom, youâre the one who always gives me the best advice. I wouldnât have made it this far without you,â Elizabeth said smugly. âNow that Mr. Ellison has fully accepted this child, whatâs our next move?â
Samantha replied, âSince Mr. Ellison wants this child, Elizabeth, you have to give him one.â
âHuh? How am I supposed to do that?â Elizabeth asked. âThereâs nothing in my stomach. I canât just magically make a baby appear.â
Samantha paced back and forth beside the bed, deep in thought. âLet me thinkâ¦â
âMom, didnât you say before that I should fake a pregnancy, then pretend to have a miscarriage later? I still think thatâs the safest and most reliable plan.â
