Chapter 35 Morning Sickness
Caroline gritted her teeth. âIâve never met anyone as unreasonable as you. So, you can do whatever you want, but Iâm not allowed even the slightest freedom, huh?â
âDo you have the means to defy me?â
âNo, I donât. Thatâs why I wonât fight you, but I can stay out of your way,â Caroline said. âAre you divorcing me or not? Iâll leave with nothing. I donât want a single cent from you.â
He thought his wealth and power made him untouchable?
She didnât care!
Davidâs grip on her chin tightened. âYou seem pretty confident after meeting Nash, huh?â
âMy confidence comes from knowing I can stand on my own two feet and survive in this world.â
âNo company will hire you,â David sneered. âStop wasting your time.â
Caroline had already guessed as much. Of course, he wouldnât let her find a job so easily.
I left Ellison Group, and you immediately blacklisted me, didnât you?â Caroline stared at him. âDavid, youâre so petty. What did I ever do to you to deserve this kind of treatment?â
He leaned in closer, his breath brushing against her face. âI just enjoy toying with you.â

Davidâs nose was less than an inch from hers.
âBeg me,â he said. âMaybe Iâll consider letting you go.â
From the start, David had only ever wanted Caroline to bow her head, admit she was wrong, and submit to him. But her stubbornness knew no bounds, and she never uttered a single word of concession.
Locked in a dark room, nearly breaking her hand, blacklisted across the city⦠Caroline had never once begged him, which frustrated him to no end.
Sheâd rather seek help from Nash than turn to him.
Caroline lifted her head and met his dark gaze. âIâd rather beg for food on the streets or dig through trash than ask you for anything!â
The tension in the room reached a freezing point.
âYou wonât beg me, but youâll beg Nash?â Davidâs lips curled into a thin line. âDo you really think heâd risk going against me for you?â

âYou think too highly of yourself. Nash already has a fiancée. What do you think you are?â
David released her with a dismissive shove, leaning back on the couch. He grabbed a lighter, lighting a cigarette with practiced ease. Smoke curled around him, giving his sharp features an ethereal quality.
He smoked in silence, toying with the lighter, his demeanor indifferent and aloof.
âHis fiancée doesnât change the fact that he loves me,â Caroline said. âHe chased me for four years. Iâm his unattainable love.â
She added sarcastically, âThey say a manâs heart always has room for more than one woman. Thereâs always an unattainable love and a bittersweetâmuse etched into his soul.â
David flicked the ash from his cigarette. âDo you always have to be so shameless?â
âThatâs on you.â
âYou havenât seen what Iâm truly capable of, Caroline,â David said coldly.
If he truly unleashed his full power, she wouldnât survive.
He wanted to break her slowly, watching her struggle and attempt to save herself. To him, it was⦠entertaining.
Caroline stared at his face, the longer she looked, the more nauseated she felt. She couldnât stand it
anymore.
Her stomach churned violently.
