Caroline shrugged. âAlright, I donât get it. Just pretend I never said anything.â

Trying to reason with Elizabeth was pointless. There was no way to reason with her because they wanted completely different things.
Elizabeth was after status and recognition, while Caroline longed for pure, passionate loveâa love that lasted a lifetime, shared between just two people.
One valued power and wealth; the other valued emotion and devotion.
Davidâs eyes narrowed slightly as he studied her.
She lowered her head, deliberately avoiding his gaze. âCan I go home now?â
His reply was immediate. âNo.â
âThen what else do you need me to do?â
Davidâs voice was emotionless. âStand here. And wait.â
Caroline didnât question it. She simply responded with a short âOh.â
Without another word, David turned and grabbed Elizabethâs hand, striding toward the hospital ward.
âMr. Ellison⦠slow down,â Elizabeth whined. âI canât keep up.â
Without hesitation, David bent down and lifted her into his arms.
âAh!â Elizabeth gasped in delight, immediately wrapping her arms around his neck.
She was overjoyed.
Turning toward Caroline, she expected to see jealousy in her expression.
But Caroline had already turned away, uninterested.
Out of sight, out of mind.
Caroline felt nothingâDavid could do as he pleased, and it wouldnât make a difference to her.
Elizabeth deliberately raised her voice. âMr. Ellison, am I heavy? Carrying me must be tiring⦠But itâs okay; I can walk.â
âI can handle carrying you.â
âI feel so happy right nowâ¦â
David carried her back to her hospital room and gently laid her on the bed.
Elizabeth, however, refused to let go. âMr. Ellison⦠Are you leaving again tonight?â
âMm.â

would help me feel at ease.â
She tugged at his sleeve, her eyes soft with expectation, hoping he would give in.
But Davidâs response remained the same. âGet some rest.â
Another rejection.
âMr. Ellisonâ¦â A trace of disappointment crossed Elizabethâs face. âCanât you even fulfill this one simple request for me?â
âThe room is too small. The bed is too small. Thereâs no space for two.â
Elizabeth knew that was just an excuse. She wanted to argue, but David had already pulled his sleeve free and straightened up.
He wasnât staying.
âIn the past, I wouldnât have asked you to stay,â Elizabeth murmured, her voice shaking. âBut tonight⦠tonight, I feel awful.â Tears pooled in her eyes. âYou saw how Ms. Harper treated me⦠the way she spoke to me. You heard everything.â
Davidâs expression remained neutral. âDonât dwell on it.â
âHow can I not, Mr. Ellison? Sheâs your motherâyour closest familyâbut she doesnât like me. She looks down on me, warns me⦠How am I supposed to deal with her in the future?â
âYou wonât have to see her often,â David replied. âAnd if you do, just keep your distance.â
Harper lived at the family estate, enjoying her retirement, rarely interfering with the younger generation.
This was just an unexpected encounter.
âItâs easy to avoid her now, but what about in the future?â Elizabeth asked. âWhat about after the baby is born? When she has a grandson? Am I supposed to keep hiding from her forever?â
Davidâs brows furrowed. âWeâll deal with it when the time comes.â
