“You’re pregnant with my child. That’s a big deal–how could I not show up and celebrate with you?”

Elizabeth scoffed and lay back down.

Andrew climbed onto the bed, resting his hand on her stomach. “After all this effort, I was starting to think it’d never happen. You almost wore me out, but we finally pulled it off. Haha, this is amazing.”

“Were you careful getting here?” Elizabeth asked. “Are you sure no one followed you?”

He grinned. “At this hour? Please. The only things lurking in this hospital are ghosts.”

“You’re making it sound creepy.”

“Relax.” Andrew smirked. “I always sneak in through the window. Who could possibly follow me? It’s not like I walk straight through the hospital room door.”

“Oh.”

Andrew picked up on her mood shift. “What’s wrong? Did someone upset you? Was it Caroline?”

“Who else? Her, and that old witch Harper…”

The two of them squeezed together on the narrow hospital bed, tangled in each other.

At the Ellison residence, Caroline stepped out of the bathroom, freshly showered, and immediately met David’s gaze.

His expression was unreadable, but the way he was watching her sent an uneasy chill down her spine.

Avoiding his gaze, she walked over and sat at the vanity.

“Why are you staring at me like that?” She asked casually. “Worried I might have had an accident in the bathroom again?”

“What do you think?”

“Relax. I used the shower today, not the bathtub. And since you already threw out all my stuff, there’s no chance of another ‘misunderstanding.””

She kept her tone light, but through the mirror, she carefully studied his face.

David sat on the bed, half–reclined, his robe slightly open, exposing his toned chest. His arms were crossed, his entire posture tense.

He was waiting.

Caroline lowered her gaze.

She couldn’t figure out what he was thinking, so she chose to stay silent.

The only sound in the room was the soft clinking of her skincare bottles.

“I’ll ask you again–who was he?” David’s voice was calm but carried a sharp edge. “Caroline, you know exactly what happens when you lie to me.”

She bit her lip, forcing herself to remain composed. In the most casual tone she could manage, she said, “I already told you. He was just some guy asking for directions. Why are you making such a big deal out of this? I barely know anyone in this city, and the ones I do, you already know too.”

“A random stranger?” His voice was laced with doubt. “That’s your answer?”

“Yes.” Caroline sighed. “David, is your jealousy really this out of control? A stranger asks me for directions and says a few words, and now you’re acting like it’s a betrayal and picking a fight? You’re being ridiculous.”

David let out a cold chuckle.

“I’m not running off with a stranger, don’t worry,” Caroline added. “Besides, he was old enough to be my father.”

David’s tone turned ice–cold. “Caroline, I keep giving you chances. Over and over. But you… never seem to appreciate them.”
