Davidâs expression darkened instantly, his gaze cold and laced with a murderous edge.
He shot to his feet, locking eyes with Elizabeth. âSay that again.â
Elizabeth trembled, feigning fear as she backed away repeatedly. âMr. Ellison, I⦠I shouldnât have said that. Iâm sorry! Just pretend you didnât hear it. It was nonsense, my mistake. I shouldnât have gossiped behind Carolineâs backâ¦â
She was nearly in tears, waving her hands desperately. I didnât mean to say it. I just thought you had a right to know. Iâm not sure what happened between you and Caroline after marriage, maybe you already knew, and I spoke out of turn.â
David initially intended to pressure Elizabeth, hoping she would break under the weight of his authority
and confess.
He hadnât expected her to drop such a bombshell instead.

Judging by Mr. Ellisonâs expression, itâs clear he hasnât touched Caroline yet. Perfect. This time, Caroline wonât get away unscathed!
Davidâs eyes narrowed. âHow do you
know her secret?â
âCaroline was close to a guy back in college. I think his name was Nash,â Elizabeth replied. âThey had a great relationship. He often drove her home late at night. A few times, they even stayed out all night, claiming they went camping with classmatesâ¦â
She spoke while carefully observing Davidâs reaction.
âOf course, whether they actually camped or went somewhere else, I canât say. But Mr. Ellison, a man and a woman alone together, liking each other, how could they resist?â
Davidâs expression grew increasingly grim.
Caroline had always insisted that her relationship with Nash was pure, just shy of romance, built on

Turns out, she lied to me.
His woman had already belonged to another man. She was a secondâhand possession.
Without hesitation, David strode toward the stairs.
âMr. Ellison,â Elizabeth called out, pretending to restrain him. âYou didnât know? I assumed you and Caroline had already been together and that it didnât matter to you.â
David brushed her hand aside, unwilling to engage further, continuing his climb upstairs.

Watching his retreating figure, Elizabeth loudly added, âI even wondered if Caroline had secretly gone to the hospital for surgery to restore that⦠layer, so youâd think she was a virgin.â
