Chapter 96 A Close Call
âI⦠I was so foolish to do something like this. I didnât mean to hurt Caroline. I just wanted to scare herâIâd never actually harm her. Sheâs always bullied me, looked down on me, and even laid hands on me. Iâve been holding a grudge because of it. And then sheâs the one whoâs your lawful wife. I was jealous, and it clouded my judgment. Thatâs why I made such a terrible mistake. Mr. Ellison, I did all of this because I love you. I realize now how wrong I was, and Iâll never do it again. Look, Caroline wasnât harmed, and sheâs perfectly fine. Letâs just put an end to this, okay?â
Caroline couldnât help but let out a cold laugh. Twisting the truth and calling black whiteâElizabeth always excels at this act.
But this time, Caroline wasnât going to let her get away with it.
She couldnât forget how close she had come to losing her life, and not just hers. Caroline had to settle this
score.
There was no way sheâd let Davidâs pity spare Elizabeth from facing the consequences.
Caroline stood and walked up to Elizabeth. âI wasnât harmed? Thatâs easy for you to say from where youâre standing. Do you have any idea? If David hadnât arrived in time, I would have been violated by those two kidnappers.â
She deliberately brought up the incident, knowing it was the one thing David could never tolerate.
David had his flawsâhis possessiveness and his unrelenting sense of controlâbut to him, Caroline was entirely his. No one else was allowed to touch her, let alone harm her.
Caroline pressed on. âI was so desperate at that moment, Elizabeth, that I almost bit my tongue to end it all. I refused to live with that humiliation. It was only when David saved me at the very last second that I stopped.â
âSo tell me, Elizabeth. Do you really think your excuse of a momentary lapse in judgment and just âtrying to scare meâ is enough to brush this aside? People must face the consequences of their actions!â
Elizabeth turned her head, glaring at Caroline with venom in her eyes. You wretched woman. Wretched!
But when she looked back at David, her expression softened into one of pitiful sorrow. âMr. Ellison, I truly know I was wrong. Please give me another chance and forgive me. I promise Iâll never do this again. I wonât ask for anything else. Just let me stay by your side
David lowered his gaze to the tearâstreaked face of Elizabeth. He had always hated seeing women cry. Now, it only made his frustration boil over.
Caroline spoke softly. âDavid, donât forget⦠what you promised me.â
He had vowed to punish the person behind her kidnapping. She had already told him that it was Elizabeth, but he hadnât believed her. Now that the evidence was clear, he couldnât deny it any longer.
If David still chose to protect Elizabeth this time, then Carolineâ¦
I wonât have even the slightest expectation of him anymore.
David met Carolineâs gaze, his lips moving faintly. âI remember.â

Elizabeth, unable to understand their exchange, grew increasingly panicked. She clung tightly to Davidâs pant leg.
âMr. Ellison, you can hit me, scold me, or punish me however you want. Iâll accept anything. I only have one requestâdonât send me away. Donât ignore me⦠I promise Iâll never let jealousy or envy get the better of me again.â
Caroline watched the scene with a calm heart. Iâve done everything I can.
Whatever happened next was beyond her control.
