Chapter 9 - Oh
Don't Judge by Appearances
After hanging up the phone, Yan Xi noticed that Yuan Yi was looking at her again. She touched her face; she had just checked her reflection and her makeup wasn't smudged. What did his strange expression mean?
"Isn't your husband coming to pick you up?" Yuan Yi's expression was quite subtle.
Husband?
Yan Xi looked at Yuan Yi in confusion, "Isn't your wife coming to pick you up?"
"I don't have a wife," Yuan Yi said, pulling out his phone, clearly not wanting to talk to Yan Xi anymore.
"You don't have a wife, so does that mean I have a husband?" Yan Xi found Yuan Yi's reasoning a bit strange. "Which of your eyes saw that I was married?"
Yuan Yi put away his phone and turned to look at Yan Xi, "The man who was with you at your mother's birthday banquet last time, who is he?"
"I was thanking you on behalf of my dad. I didn't expect that in your eyes, he still seems so young." Yan Xi looked Yuan Yi up and down. Even though he was young, his gaze was already so sharpâhow would he ever get married?
Don't get angry, don't get angry, he did help her earlier. Plus, he's the second young master of the Yuan family, someone she couldn't afford to offend.
But it still irritated her!
Yan Xi glared at Yuan Yi: "Mr. Yuan, when a man and woman are alone together, they could be a married couple, siblings, mother and son, father and daughter, or even siblings. Adults have complex thoughts, which is fine, but your eyesight still needs to be better."
Being called out like this, Yuan Yi's expression darkened. He held back his irritation and made a dry noise.
He'd never seen a father so patient with his daughter. Usually, a few bank cards or more shares were enough to show love and care. How could this woman's family dote on a woman in her twenties as if she were a toddler?
"Comrades," the police officer knocked on the desk to get their attention, "The investigation is clear. If you have no objections, please sign here."
Yan Xi took the document, glanced at it to make sure there were no issues, and signed her name.
Yan Xi?
She quickly withdrew her gaze, and Yuan Yi signed his name. He looked fragile, but his handwriting was elegant and bold.
"Thank you both," the superior leader entered with a warm smile. "Your car can't be driven for now, so we've arranged for a car to take you both home. Please come this way."
"No need to trouble you, my family has already sent a car," Yuan Yi adjusted his shirt collar, exuding the aura of a business elite. Except for his face, which had a strong presence, no one would have expected him to beat up a driver over a disagreement.
Fortunately, the person who was beaten didn't pursue responsibility, or they would have to go to the station.
Yan Xi didn't want to trouble the police, so she took out her phone and prepared to order a cab.
"Hey," Yuan Yi, standing a few steps away, looked at Yan Xi. "Are you going home now?"
Yan Xi blinked at him but didn't speak.
"Let's go. I'll take you home," Yuan Yi nodded his chin toward the door. "It's hard to get a taxi at this time."
"No, it's fine," Yan Xi shook her head. "I'm afraid people will misunderstand and think we're a couple, that I'm clinging to a rich family."
This woman was so paranoid, still remembering what had happened earlier? Yuan Yi sneered and turned to leave, but when he reached the door, he couldn't help but turn around. This woman seemed delicate and small. What if she met a bad driver or had to wait too long for a cab? If something happened to her, his conscience wouldn't be at peace.
His expression changed back and forth, and in the end, he reluctantly walked back. "Don't worry, everyone knows I like fiery red lips, big chest, and long legs. They won't misunderstand that we're a couple. Get in the car."
Yan Xi looked down at her chest and legs. Was her chest small and her legs short?
This second young master of the Yuan family's eyes must be blind!
"What's with the whining?" Yuan Yi sighed deeply, turning his face away after a while. "I said something wrong earlier, don't take it to heart."
"I am a woman, I can't do those manly gestures," Yan Xi jumped off the steps and gave Yuan Yi a sly smile. "Well, thank you, second young master Yuan, for taking me home."
Yuan Yi was speechless. Was this woman just waiting for him to apologize? Huh?
The two of them got into the car. Yuan Yi buckled his seatbelt and asked Yan Xi, "Where do you live?"
Yan Xi gave him the address, and Yuan Yi turned to the driver. "Take her home first."
The car fell silent again. Yan Xi noticed that Yuan Yi was looking down at his phone, obviously not wanting to say another word. She took out her phone and started scrolling through Weibo. She quickly saw that the news about their car accident was trending.
Lamborghini and Cayenne Ferrari collidedâthis wasn't just a car crash; it was a pile of money. Fortunately, the license plate and the bystanders were blurred; otherwise, it would have been even more interesting.
Below the post, some netizens were spilling the details, like how arrogant the Lamborghini owner was, how handsome the Cayenne owner was, but the Ferrari owner (Yan Xi) hardly got any mentions.
After reading through the popular comments, Yan Xi took a peek at Yuan Yi. Was he really as handsome as the netizens claimed? Personally, she preferred the elegant, noble, and refined type, not this style.
"What are you looking at?" Yuan Yi suddenly raised his head to look at her.
"Looking at how handsome you are," Yan Xi replied without missing a beat.
"Oh," Yuan Yi coldly lowered his head, "I see." This kind of attempt to flirt with him was outdated, and he was completely unmoved.
"It's nothing, I was just being polite," Yan Xi continued looking at her phone, scrolling through Weibo. The atmosphere in the car became awkwardly silent again.
Half an hour later, the car stopped in front of Yan Xi's residential complex. Yan Xi glanced at the gate, then turned to Yuan Yi and said earnestly, "Second Young Master Yuan, thank you so much for today."
Although this person had misunderstood her relationship with her father, as the saying goes, ignorance is no crime. Besides, he had carried her out of the car and sent her home. If she didn't express some gratitude, it would be ungrateful.
"No need," Yuan Yi glanced at his watch, his face showing signs of impatience. "It's an apology for misunderstanding your relationship with your father. You can get out now."
Yan Xi opened the door, stepped out, and walked a few steps forward before the car drove off.
She went home, took a shower, and explained to Song Hai that her car had a minor issue and was sent to the shop for repairs. She would be using another car tomorrow morning. Song Hai didn't think much of it, made her a bowl of noodles, and after she ate, urged her to go to bed.
"Dad," Yan Xi cleaned the bowl and saw Song Hai still watching TV, "You should go to bed early too."
"It's fine, I sleep too early at night and wake up in the middle of the night," Song Hai glanced at his watch. "It's already eleven, go to bed, don't mind me."
"Okay." Yan Xi nodded and went back to her room.
On the other side, in the house of Yuan Yi's family, the wall clock's hands were nearing 11 o'clock. Yuan Bo, who was talking to the housekeeper, asked, "Has Yuan Yi returned?"
"Not yet," the housekeeper said worriedly. "It's unusual for the Second Young Master to come home this late. Could something have delayed him?"
Just then, the sound of footsteps could be heard from outside. The housekeeper hurried to open the door, and standing there was indeed the Second Young Master.
"Second Young Master, there's soup simmering in the kitchen. Would you like some?" The housekeeper noticed his bad mood and spoke in a softer tone.
"No need," Yuan Yi tore off his tie and casually tossed it aside. "I'll take a shower and go to bed." He glanced at the empty house and asked Yuan Bo, who was sitting on the sofa, "Are Mom and Dad out on a trip?"
Yuan Bo nodded. "Go to sleep."
Yuan Yi gave a nonchalant smile, then turned and went upstairs.
The next day, Yuan Yi didn't go to the office. He stayed home to catch up on sleep and barely managed to get up in the evening. After dinner, he slouched on the sofa, holding the remote control and randomly flipping through channels.
When he skipped a channel, he saw someone he recognized, so he switched back.
The program was about an elderly woman whose dog went missing. She suspected the rowdy young man next door had taken it, but the young man looked so intimidating that she didn't dare ask him. That's why she turned to the TV station for help.
Yuan Yi looked at the channel logo. It was Channel 8 from the Capital. No wonder they were airing trivial matters; such a station could only broadcast things like this.
He didn't expect that the woman, Yan Xi, was actually a reporter.
Yan Xi knocked on the door of the neighboring apartment. The door was opened by a young man covered in tattoos, with blonde hair and a non-mainstream necklace around his neck.
"Who are you looking for?" The young man spoke in a menacing tone.
Yuan Yi thought Yan Xi would back down, but to his surprise, her smile became even sweeter. In just a few words, she led the elderly woman and the cameraman into the apartment.
The so-called "bad boy" turned out to have an unexpectedly tidy home, and lying on the bed was a sick woman, his wife. When the wife saw the reporters, she thought her husband had done something wrong and tried to get out of bed.
The young man hurriedly helped her, showing genuine concern.
"Sorry for the intrusion," Yan Xi smiled and said, "We are reporters from the TV station. We heard about the touching story between you two and wanted to interview you." She didn't mention the dog at all, and there was no sign of disrespect on her face. She even helped the woman pull the blanket back onto the bed.
This woman could lie without batting an eye. Yuan Yi felt a bit disgusted, but his hand holding the remote control didn't move.
In the end, the result of the program was that the elderly woman's dog was found. The "bad boy" didn't steal it; the dog had been adopted by a kind couple running a restaurant. The dog had broken its leg and couldn't move for the time being.
The elderly woman apologized to the young man, who didn't mind at all. On the way upstairs, he even helped her carry a grocery bag.
"Second Young Master, are you watching this show?" The housekeeper came out with a plate of fruit and saw Yuan Yi watching the program he liked. "This female host is good. She has a nice appearance and a pleasant voice. The program is so interesting. Many of the elderly ladies in our neighborhood like watching it."
Yuan Yi put down the remote control and casually replied, "I was just flipping through channels, didn't know what they were talking about."
Elderly women liking something? How could the Second Young Master Yuan possibly watch that?!
Tsk!
