The two siblings and their Amity mother sat there in total silence. Miles was absolutely speechless with his jaw agape, and Jade on the other hand stared blankly at their mother. It was the type of stare where you could tell an abundance of things were going on inside of the mind of the person who directed it. And sadly for their mother, it was the exact stare she expected. So many emotions where building up inside Jade it overwhelmed her completely, "So you're telling me, you lied to the both of us?" She says to her, feeling her mouth run dry and a lump form inside of her throat. The rhetorical question didn't exactly come out hostile, it came out more in a huff of disbelief.
"Us? Your supposed 'twin' children for seventeen years? ...we've had a..." Jade trailed off, struggling to even say the word. "A sibling this whole time and both of you kept that from us? If that's not the truth then please, explain." Jade harshly whispered to her mother. She held back the fiery rage she now held against her mother, only because she wasn't sure if what she assumed to be the truth, was in fact the truth. "No no no, it's not like that at all. I'd never purposely do something like this to you two. When all three of you were cleaned and bundled up, Johanna reminded us of one of Amity's rules," their emotionally frantic mother explains, "An Amity household can only consists of four members per family. A mother, A father, and only two children. To keep the peace. We wanted to keep all three of you, I mean you're our babies for god's sake." She pauses, "But it was that day, for the first time, Johanna had asked me and your dad the impossible. S-she asked us to only choose two of you to raise." She says sorrowfully. "And we couldn't even do that. Johanna had to choose for us. I could barely watch her pick up your brother. I wanted all three of you. We wanted all of three you. But we couldn't have all of you." She adds as tears began to stain her cheeks. Jade struggled to keep her emotions together as her bottom lip began to quiver. Her vision then began to blur by her own forming tears.
"Brother? It.. it was a boy?" Miles breaths, wiping his face from tears. "We have a little brother?" Miles asks still in disbelief, their mother looks to him and slowly nods. "William, his name's William." Their mother tells them, and her children look at one another. Jade looks back at their mom, "Where... where is he?" She asked. "He was given to a kind lady who couldn't have children. Johanna told me she were to be trusted, and I couldn't do anything but trust her and I hoped that one day, I'd get to see my little William again." She answers her, Jade put her elbows on the table in front of her and rubbed her temples.
"Which faction?" Miles asked impatiently, looking at his mother. "For the seventeen years he's been here, at Dauntless." The saddened mother slowly says, and the both of their hearts sunk at the thought of being under the same roof as him and not knowing. That is until they remember their choosing ceremony, and the possibly of him choosing to leave Dauntless. "And at the choosing ceremony, he choose to stay in Dauntless. That was closest me and your father had ever been to him in years." Their mother explains, Jade lightly scoffs while her brother leaned down and put his hands over his face. "So we've literally been training near him this whole time? Great. We've probably walked passed him so many times without a clue he's our brother." Miles says into his hands, "Oh and just wait until we find him and try to explain to him he's our brother. I wonder how that's gonna go." Jade says, and their mother oddly enough pulls her wedding ring off.
"And this is the exact reason why your father decided to give up his wedding ring, and sent it off with along with William. Look at what your father hand engraved on the inside of it." Their mother handed her daughter her gold wedding band. Jade looked close at the inside and could read, 'Family, Before Faction. J + A .H.' engraved in small letters, before passing it to Miles. "Your fathers band has the same saying, and same lettering. If you find him and you see him with the same band, show him mine and he'll have to be convinced." Their mother suggests they do, and no matter how upset they were with her, they agreed it was a good plan. Jade had just one more question, "One more thing, why keep it from us these past three-four years? We were obviously mature enough to understand then, why tell us right now?" She questions her, their mother ponders for just a second. "I wanted to wait until after your choosing day, because the last thing I wanted is for either one of you, or both of you to choose Dauntless only for the sake of your brother and get there to realize he choose to leave. I just didn't want to risk giving you a biological reason to choose Dauntless and be stuck in a faction that you only chose because of him." She explains, "But obviously all three of my babies are just like their father, Dauntless-born at heart." Her mother says to them fondly, but Jade could only focus on the words 'Dauntless-Born.'. She remembers something.
"Wait, didn't dad say he had a sister that stayed here in Dauntless? I swear he mentioned something about an aunt lucy?" She questioned her Mother, their mother laughs and then eventually nods. "Yes he did, but i think it was aunt Lacy honey." She corrected. "Tomato, Tamoto. Potato, Patato. Same difference. Anyways, Did he ever tell you which apartment she lived in?" Jade questions, "I know the apartment letter was C, but I can't remember which number it was." Their mother tells them, moments before visitation hours were up. They all stand, "do you think you two will ever forgive us?" Their mother asks with a hopeful look in her eyes, a very familiar hopeful look. It was the look Jade would give her mother anytime she had gotten in trouble with Miles when they were younger.
And she soon realized just how effective it was. "Of course we forgive the both of you. I see it wasn't either of your guys choice, And we can't possibly blame you for Amity's fucked up rules." Jade says, and she could see how stunned her mother was at her language, but she eventually nodded her head. "Fucked up indeed." Their Amity-born mother says hesitantly, making them laugh. They group hug their mother goodbye, but just before she pulled away she whispered in her children's ears. "Bring our William home." Just before turning to walk up the stairs, towards the exit just as the rest of the other parents.
"We will mother, we promise." Jade says, even though she was well out of earshot. Soon after all the adults had left the visiting room the incomplete, and apparent set of triplets head out to the pit with all the other new Dauntless members. Miles and Natalie walked next to each other and were dead silent the whole way there, while their friends on the other hand, made the halls echo towards their destination. Once they all made it to the pit the group of friends take a seat on the same piece of large cement as last time. Minutes later the Dauntless-Born take their seats on the larger, multi-layered, slabs of cement.
Miles's and Jade's focus where glued on the Dauntless-Born members the moment they stepped in view. They looked at each and every face trying to find a similarity, and or a spot a gold ring but, it was honestly no use. Only because they had no idea what he could possibly look like. Eventually they gave up, and looked at each other as they sat there in silence, while all their friends happily conversed with one another. Christina notices how quiet they were and looked up at them, and instantly became curious. "Why are you guys so quiet? More importantly, why do you two look like you've just seen a ghost?" The former Candor asks, only Miles turns his head to look at her.
"Oh uh, sorry guys, guess we didn't notice, right Nat?" Miles asks her, but sees that she was too focused on the Dauntless-Born, desperately looking for their brother once again. He lightly smacked her arm, "huh? Oh, oh yeah. it's just one of the days you could say." Jade says and looks back over at the Dauntless-Born, only to see Four walking in between both groups and stopping right in front of both. "Listen up!" He shouts, causing both groups to quiet down and focus their attention on him. He pulls what looked to be note cards, "I'm pretty sure you all know why your here so I'll just get to the point. Today, you'll be assign to a job of which your ranking level has recommended. There are exactly nine different jobs in total, and each of you will get either one, two or maybe even three different jobs recommended. And if you haven't already found out, top five ranked will be automatically tested for Leadership by the end of the day. If you only get one recommended job, you are obligated to go into that job regardless of whether you want to or not. Unless of course you're one of those five ranked and have more then one job recommended. But before I send those five to be tested, I'll begin." Four says, Jade was disappointed that her apparent new brother didn't make it in the top five, or else finding him would be a lot easier. "First Job will be: Guarding the wall. If your name is called please get into a separate group off to the sides of me." Four paused, "Jacob and Ben." He calls.
And all their friends watch Ben stand from being seated and walk up near Four, so does this Jacob from the Dauntless-Born. "Next Job: Keeping an eye on the Factionless. If your name is Molly, Christa, Carter or James please come on up." Fours instructs, and the group of people walk up as they were told. "Next job will be: Transfer Instructor." He pauses and lightly smiles at Jade. "Jade please come up." He calls her, her eyes lit up and she heads out to stand near him. "Third Job: Dauntless-Born Instructor." Four paused once more, "Liam." He called, and Jade watched as a tall boy slowly walks up and stands on the other side of Four.
She looked closely at this young man, and recalling the time when her brother had ask who ranked fifth place. She felt as if she had saw Liam from somewhere before. But, at the same time, he looked unfamiliar. Unrecognizable even. Four continues, "Fourth Job: Surveillance. Miles and Will. Fifth Job: Patrol. Tris, Uriah and Christina." Miles and Will did a fancy handshake while Tris and Christina nearly jumped for joy at the news of being able to work together. The two boys stand near Jade as Tris, Christina and Dauntless-born Uriah stand near Liam. Miles looks over as Jade and smiles, she smiles back.
Dauntless-Born Sierra, Jessica and Layton and transfer Kate are all appointed to Medical, while transfer Beth and Dauntless-Born Jordan and Joshua are appointed to transportation. Once everyone is in their rightful groups Four cleared his throat, and explains what job with be doing what, of course except for the self explanatory ones. He also told each individual group, -except for Jade considering he'd be the one training her- where to meet the appropriate people for the training they'll need for their jobs. "Now that we got all that out the way I would like to call up the top five ranked and a few others as well. First rank, Edward, second Peter, third Rose, fourth Jade, and fifth Liam. I'd also like to see Tris and Miles, the rest of you may head out to your job instructors as said earlier." Four instructs, and everyone except for the ones he called take their leave. "Peter, Rose and Edward since you three only got Leadership from your ranks you all may report to the Fear simulation testing room, there you'll be tested for Leadership." Four tells them, and all of them head off, Peter turns around while walking backwards.
"Later losers!" He shouts before walking forward beside Edward with Rose behind them. Jade rolls her eyes as Four tucks the note-cards into his pocket. "Alright, first off, Jade and Liam after Leadership testing I want you two to report the training room, that's where I'll be with the Dauntless-Born instructor, Lauren. We'll both be separately training the two of you to take our places as the new Instructors for the many new Dauntless members to come. But of course one year of training won't completely prepare the both of you so you'll be accompanying both me and Lauren as we handle next years new Dauntless members. Basically like a TA would for a teacher. Understood?" Four explained looking at both her and Liam, the two soon to be instructors nod their heads. "Good, now there's something I need to address all four of you about but before I do, I need to know if all of you can keep this to yourselves." Four asks them, Jade and Miles stood next to each other with Tris beside Miles, and Liam beside Jade.
Tris and Liam look at Four confused, while the siblings on the other hand separately look at Liam and Tris confused. The two knew all to well Four was about to give them a little speech on keeping their Divergence a secret, but they wondered why with Tris and Liam present? "Well? Can you?" Four asks, the four of them hesitantly nod. "Alright, now in order to not waste time I'll just get straight to it. The reason you guys are still here in front of me is because you all have something in common." Four explains, "All four of you are Divergent." And it is then suspicion rises.
