CH 3
How To Love A Witch
âMy dear, no matter how comfortable you may feel, you mustnât go out wearing an undergarment.â
ââ¦â
âYouâll catch everyoneâs attention.â
Damn it. Damn it. Damn it. As I tormented the fruit on my plate with a fork, I glared at my chuckling husband who was teasing me. âDonât call me âmy dearâ.â
âThen what shall I call you?â
ââWicked Witchâ has a nice ring to it. âMonsterâ is fine too.â People often call me a monster.
Lukas shook his head. âYour appearance doesnât befit either of those.â
While I was in a dilemma because I didnât know how to act accordingly in this situation, he was very relaxed. ââ¦Why donât you care?â
âHmm?â
âIâm a witch, and youâre a human!â Unable to stand it, I shot up from my seat and slammed the table. The tableware shook. Nevertheless, he remained unfazed.
âEven if I canât use magic, Iâm a witch. A couple of months ago we were at each otherâs throats.â It was impossible to feel comfortable when two enemies were in the same room. Even though the humans promised to form an alliance, theyâre especially good at lying.
I was annoyed.
âYouâre my wife,â he said.
âOnly for a year.â
âNo one knows what happens in the future.â
âSo, it will end before a year passes, right?â
âIt might go in a different direction.â
A different direction? Wait, what do you mean in a different direction? Ugh. Well, a year feels like a long way off.
âI would like to address you as âmy dearâ. I also donât mind if you give me a pet name.â
âIâm sorry, but Iâm not going to play house.â I planned to get along with him to a certain extent, but pet names were a different matter.
âIt seems we arenât on the same page. Iâm here to be a loving husband to my wife.â
ââ¦Arenât you here because you made a deal with your human emperor?â
âSame difference.â
It was said he had something to gain from this marriage, but now he was answering vaguely. This didnât help.
âYouâre free to play with other women,â I said.
âI have no plans to do such a thing.â
âDonât you have a lover?â I thought a lot of girls would like the duke because he was young. Oh, perhaps it has to do with his personality. I recalled the words of the soldier who escorted me here.
âMy lord is a knight who lived on the battlefield since he was young. He can be very violent.â
With how good Lukasâs background was, there should be a woman in his life. Yet he married a witch. Something was off.
âEveryone else runs away and screams when they see me. They curse their luck. Others start crying,â I said.
âDo you wish for me to do the same?â
âAt the very least you shouldnât call me âmy dearâ.â
âThis marriage has to be a successful one.â
âYou donât have to be so nice.â
âAm I being nice to you?â he asked.
Why is he leading the conversation in that direction? His treatment wasnât even close to being considerate, but it was better than the attitudes of other humans.
âA soldier told me what kind of person you are.â
âIâm certain he said I was a good man.â
âNot exactly.â On the contrary, it was the complete opposite. âI heard you were a very violent person.â
âSuch impudence. Heâll have his mouth sewn shut for slandering a member of the royal family.â
I could sense the sincerity in his words. I decided to change the subject before he found out who the soldier was. âUsually, humans are eager to kill witches.â
âThatâs to be expected for a normal human.â
âYou donât consider yourself normal?â
âI am quite fond of witches.â
ââ¦Huh?â
âI like witches,â he said. âWhy are you so surprised?â
I blinked. âIâve seen plenty of humans who hate witches, but Iâve never seen a man who likes them.â
At a glance, humans were divided into groups that either want to coexist with witches or hunt them down. Many donât want to live peacefully with us, including a majority of nobles in the capital. What was the chance my husband belonged to the other group?
âAre you a warlock?â
âNo.â
âBut you said you liked us⦠Oh, youâre one of those fanatics, arenât you?â
There was a group of humans who wanted to be witches. They often wandered around in search of Kartelle. There were also humans who thought witches were superior to humans; the Edelin Empire treated them as dangerous.
âIâm not,â he answered.
âThatâs good to hear.â It wouldâve been a disaster for the empire and myself if the duke was part of those extremist groups.
âHmm⦠Are you an alchemist?â
Lukas grinned as if I just said something amusing. âIt appears you arenât aware. Thatâs a very impolite question.â
âReally?â
âYes, you cannot just ask someone if heâs an alchemist all of a sudden.â
âIâll be careful in the future.â
While he nodded, he didnât answer my question. Alchemists were scholars who study the power of witches because there wasnât anything equivalent to magic in the human world. Many alchemists were eccentric people.
Letâs return to the main topic of our discussion. âThen what are you?â
âAm I not your husband?â
âI was hoping youâd give me an actual answer. Why do you like witches?â
His response will determine whether I can trust him or not. I tapped my finger on the table to show my impatience. How long was he going to look like he was deep in thought?
âI owe my life to a witch.â
ââ¦What did you just say?â
âI received the help of a witch.â
âWhen? Where?â I questioned.
âA long time ago, in the Ruberus Woods.â
Ruberus Woods. It was a place where the entrance to Kartelle was hidden. Humans knew of the doorâs existence, but not a single person crossed the barrier. The entrance to Kartelle changed locations when someone without magic entered the forest. Humans called Ruberus Woods the âForest of Labyrinthsâ for this reason.
âIâm merely repaying a favor,â Lukas said.
His steady gaze didnât reveal he was lying. I didnât know why it felt like that. Should I believe him? Was it worth taking the risk? As my conflicted feelings raged on, the door to the dining room opened. Maids carrying trays filled with food appeared. One was surprised as soon as our eyes met, and she nearly dropped the bowl she was holding. I silently took a sip of water, pretending nothing happened. Yes, that was the reaction of a normal human. My husband was a strange man. I spoke after they left.
âI believe you,â I said.
âHowever?â
âIsnât there another way to repay a favor without doing something at your expense? I wonder what the emperor offered up in exchange.â
âI donât recall ever sacrificing myself. Let me make that clear.â
âHavenât you seen the way people look at you?â
I remembered what I heard on my way here. Each time the carriage passed through a village, they all said the same thing. The people felt bad for their duke becoming a victim, but the victim himself didnât even know he was a sacrifice.
âI do pity my current circumstances.â He nodded and sighed. âMy wife walks around in her undergarments. My woes as a husband never end.â
ââ¦If you bring that up one more time, this fork wonât end up back in its drawer.â
Shut up, Iâve been trying to forget about what happened earlier. Thankfully, he reminded me how annoying of a husband he was.
âAll right. Iâd rather think youâve gone mad regardless.â
Iâm the crazy person? Me? I gave up. Sure, I could respond with a witty remark, but it wouldnât hurt to understand how humans think, how he thinks. I had nothing else to do.
âThese clothes are comfortable.â I took the initiative in case he wanted to discuss my outfit again. I made a fuss about changing my clothes, but he insisted it was fine; I remained in my undergarment. It was embarrassing to be teased at first, yet now I was used to it. The clothes here compared to Kartelle were different. The outfit I was wearing now was closer to the one Iâd wear in Kartelle.
âAre you going to wear that all the time?â
âItâs convenient for me.â
His expression changed slightly. I told him the clothes in my closet werenât good. I also said that I thought they were for someone else.
âI planned to look the other way until you were more comfortable here.â
That was a good idea. I nodded.
âHowever, you must live like us.â
Never mind.
âWe have to start with etiquette lessons. Youâll see a dukeâs wife is expected to wear heavy dresses.â
âHold onâ¦â
âOnce you learn about our history and how a noblewoman conducts herselfââ
âWait!â I felt the big picture was being completed without me. âLearn how to live like a human? Are you serious?â I hoped it was a joke.
âI shall not treat you as a witch, but as my wife. Everyone in this castle will respect you.â
âYouâve called me âmy dearââ¦â
âI am not talking about that.â He shook his head and gave me a small smile. âI will make you a duchess, Lukas Havelâs wife who manages the household.â
I was speechless. Since he was a duke, it made sense that his wife had the title of duchess; however, I was a noblewoman only in name. No one was foolish enough to give a witch the power of a duchess.
âEleanor Havel, the Duchess of Havel. Hmm, Duchess Havel has a nice ring to it.â
I refuse. Humans and witches could never get along. Before I knew it, he approached me, grabbed my hand, and kissed the back of it.
âGood morning, my lady.â
ââ¦â
âShall we begin?â
Honestly, I wanted to say ânoâ. ââ¦Please allow me to get dressed properly.â
âOh, Iâm afraid itâs too late for that.â
