"Aye haye!" She continued pacing around the guest room restlessly, biting on her thumb nail. "Mera damagh kharab ho gaya hai!" Throwing off the sandals from her feet, as they slid in opposite directions across the room, she jumped on the bed, whining.
"Yeh kia ho raha hai?" She wondered out loud. Yesterday night, Dawood had told her that they'll be going to Lahore, that he'll take her to her dream university, which was supposedly the reason she had run off. He was ready to help her with the admission process, since she didn't have anything with her and every other important thing, she couldn't have been any more grateful to him. She should be the happiest person right now, but as morning came and she realized that the time for her leaving was nearing, it caused a bad feeling in her heart.
She is going to miss everything. It had just been a few days, but she had grown an attachment to this place and him, and the thought of leaving like this was saddening for her heart.
"Itna tou mujhe apne ghar se bhaagte hue dukh nahi hua bhae!" She scoffed at her heart for feeling so depressed over the thought of leaving here. She had talked to her mom the day she went to his office, by using the telephone placed on the reception. Though, she couldn't ask or tell much since her mother seemed to be in a hurry since her brother, who was thankfully alive but just grounded in the house, hadn't charge his phone.
A knock on her door had her get up, as she roamed around to find the scattered pair of her sandals, setting herself up. With a glance at the mirror, she opened the door, the bag of her clothes, he had brought for her, and her jewellery beside her. She had to pay him back for so much, she thought looking at his dressed up figure standing at a distance from the door.
"If you're ready, let's leave." He passed her a smile, as she made her way outside, dragging the bag with her, but he quickly grabbed it though.
"We're travelling by car?" She questioned as he loaded their bags in the car's trunk.
"Yeah." He choked out, turning his head away. "Since, train isn't a safe option, is it?" And he definitely didn't have a private jet to reach the city within minutes, but travelling by the car by driving for 24 hours, he could at least spend some more time with her. Since, this might even be their last moments with each other. He had contacted the university's head, as being a renowned businessman, his request couldn't have been rejected by them. Hoor was a scholarship student so they got her files searched up.
"I know right." She bit on her lip, pulling her hair behind her ear. One more day, travelling with him. Last day.
They set off to their long journey, with heavy and anxious hearts. For Hoor, it was still confusing as to why did she even feel like this? For Dawood, he knew he liked her, but was this liking towards her more than he had thought?
"Will you miss me?" Hoor broke the silence, asking out if nowhere. She couldn't be the only one feeling this way.
"What kind of question is that?" Dawood glanced out of the window, flustered.
"A very simple question. Will you miss me or not?" Her brows furrowed together, staring at his handsome side profile.
"I.." Of course, he would. Her rants, non-stop nagging and talking, the way she pulled her hair behind her ear, her laugh, loud voice always shouting and complaining about everything. He had become so used to her in such a short period of time, and he couldn't deny the fact.
"Konsi rocket science hai jo itna soch rahein hain?" She scoffed turning her head to the front. "Nahi rehne dein. Na hi bataein!" Her mood fell off as Dawood sensed the situation he had created by acting stupid.
"Yes. I will." He cleared his throat as she let out a "Hain?" in an excited tone. Then was when her self rants started as Dawood chuckled or amusingly smiled at how she jumped from topic to topic every passing minute.
The silence of the night consumed them as Hoor tried to stay awake to give him a company but soon fell asleep as she kept on yawning and Dawood assured her he wasn't sleepy after having a strong cup of black coffee. "Agar aap so gae gaari chalate hue aur kahi thok di tou meri maut ki zimedaari aapki hogi!" She had said before falling into her slumber.
The sunrise seemed very pleasant and surreal as he had parked the car near the lake on the bridge, as he watched the view from Hoor's side of the window, while she slept like a peaceful Hoor. Her legs were placed on the dashboard head, her feet folded on top of the other. As her one hand was under her face, her cheek puffed upwards from the side, causing her lips to be in a cute pout.
"Beautiful." He murmured as she suddenly slurred in her sleep, her eyes slowly fluttering open. Snapping out of his trance, he looked ahead, rubbing his face. God! He's whipped.
"Arey. Waaaah..." She gazed out at the view, her eyes opening fully at the awesome view. "Hum kahan hain? Haw!" Before he could reply, she gasped loudly. "Jannat mai? Mujhe pata tha, aap so gae the na gaari chalate hue raat ko? Ab hum dono jannat pohanch gae hain. Lekin aapko tou jahannum mai sarrna chahiye, aapne qatal kiya hai mera." She accused him, getting her feet down and straightening up.
"Bloody hell." He snorted out.
"Haan, wahin sarrein ge aap." She snapped at him.
"Unbelievable." Shaking his head, he started off the engine driving away. "We're almost there. One more hour to go." He breathed out, as if telling himself the statement too.
"Acha." Hoor made a face, replying with a tone he couldn't fathom the meaning behind.
As they neared the entrance of the city, the place seemed to have been blocked by a few police officers who were thoroughly checking every car's travellers. But what caught both their attention were, those same thugs seated by the road, drinking cups of tea with comfortable seating arrangement done there, as if they were residing there.
"Aye haye! Yeh kia nai museebat hai?" Hoor slapped her head, lunging forward to get a better view of what was happening. Did her abba get police involved to look for her? She remembered talking to her amma, but all she mentioned was that her abba has been extremely angry and he says he wouldn't sit still until he finds her.
Dawood's brows crashed together as he swiftly parked the car at a side of the road turn, remaining unnoticed, as he got a hint of what might be the case. He regretted coming by car now.
"Aise kaamo mai bare tez hain aap." She looked at him, with a hint of amazement as he turned off the engine.
"You, wait right here. Let me go and check what's going on." He unbuckled the belt and opened the car's door.
"Ahan." Hoor watched as he got off, but peeped in his head with a warning look. "Hoor!" She gave him an innocent look, blinking her eyes.
"I repeat, don't make any stupid move. Just wait for me in the car, please." He nodded, making sure she understood what he meant by waiting in the car as she bopped her head.
"Tou mai kahan bhaag rahi hun!" She muttered as he shut the door, wearing his black glasses, walking with all his haughtiness. To his dismay, his thought was proven right as one of the officers held Hoor's picture in his hand, comparing it to every passing by car's ladies. They were here for her.
Jogging his way back to the car, he found the front seats empty, causing his heart to stop momentarily. This girl never listens, does she? Taking off his glasses, he sighed running a hand through his hair. Roaming his gaze around, he found her standing near the telephone booth, covering her face with the dupatta draped on her head.
The worst part, she was on the same path as those thugs, at a meter's distance. Running towards her, he stopped beside her to give her a scolding. "Hoor, didn't I tell you not to-" She cut him off, as her next words sucked his breath off as well.
"Mujhse shaadi karoge?" She looked up at him, with hopeful gaze, a disturbed look on her face.
"Mai?" He pointed at himself, then blinked to realize the situation. Where did shaadi come from all of a sudden?
"Jee, A for Aap kyunke aap B for boy tou hain hi par thora sa C for compromise kar lein ge tou woh jo D for dogs hain unse mera E for escape ho jae ga tou agar apko zara si bhi F for fikar hai tou ab G for ghussa thook dein aur thori si H for himmat kar ke I for iss insaan ki J for jaldi se madad kar--" She started ranting as he saw a goon making his way in their direction.
"Bloody Hell! Are you teaching ABC right now?" Hovering over her figure, to hide her, he held her by her shoulders, making her breath hitch. Guiding her towards the car, by keeping her attached to his front, he settled inside. He got them out of the danger zone, and parked the car stopping by the lake again as Hoor didn't stop rambling for the whole hour, explaining her point of view to him.
As he had left, her eyes landed on the telephone booth, and the thought to call her mother hit her. The coins in the compartment box solved the only issue as she grabbed them. Slowly, she got off the car and sneaked into it covering her face, and quickly dialled her brother's number.
"Hello?" She heard shuffling on the other side as her mother's voice from the other end reached her ears. "Ammi."
"Hoor, tum wahan shaadi karlo." This was the first thing her mother whispered into the phone as Hoor was left shocked. "Agar tumhare abba ko tum mil gai, wo tumhe zinda dafna dein ge. Wo larka jiske baare mai tumne mujhe bataya tha, agar wo tumse shaadi-" Hoor had told her mother she had met a nice guy who helped her and she was talking through his office phone at that time she had called her.
"Ammi jaan, yeh ap kia bol rahi hain? Mai aise kaise-" Hoor got restless listening to the worried tone of her mother.
"Hoor, humare paas aur koi raasta nahi hai. Tum nahi jaanti tumhare abba ne-" Her mother gasped, as Hoor heard her father call her in a distant voice. "Rafia!" And the line was cut off as Hoor placed the receiver back, feeling helpless. She knew what her mother was trying to say. The whole village wouldn't let her stay alive, once she got caught by these thugs. But, if she'll have a place to call her home, who could be a shelter for her, keep her safe from them, have a right over her. Therefore, she decided on spot, to ask him the question. He had been helping her out in every situation, she knew asking for marriage might be too much, but it might not even be that bad of an idea. Right?
//â¦ï¸â¦ï¸â¦ï¸//
They had returned to Karachi since Dawood couldn't think of any other route or solution. Hoor still felt very anxious on the insides, hoping her abba didn't hear her mother talking to her. She needed to do something quick, and if marriage was the solution then be it. Dawood hadn't replied to her proposal as she deep inside felt bad about it. Marrying her wasn't that bad of an option, they had been living together under the same roof as strangers as well.
Dawood had to go sign his deal with Kabani the next day, as he left for his office early, not meeting Hoor. He didn't know what bomb she'll drop on him if he did face her. However, Hoor wasn't going to stay put as well. She took a taxi to Golden Meadow Limited company, which was a known enterprise of the city. Telling the driver to wait there since she didn't have any change for him, she sprinted inside the building and called Flora over to pay the taxi fare for her. The poor girl didn't know what to say, so she silently did the job.
"Arey." Hoor entered his room once again, as she came across both the men seated in the same way as last time, feeling of deja vù hitting them all. "Tum phir se yahan?"
"What even..." Dawood was left speechless as he gawked at her coming inside his room as if she owned it.
"Jee, aapse phir se mil kar khushi hui. Umeed hai iss baar tapkane nahi ai aap mujhe?" Kabani stood up in a welcoming manner, with a huge playful grin on his face.
Hoor let out a laugh, making Dawood stare at her in disbelief. "Nahi nahi, wo tou galti se misunderstanding ho gai thi mujhe. Aapko bura tou nahi laga?" Hoor asked with a fake smile on her face. Laga bhi hua tou kia karlo ge?
"Of course not. That was the first time a lady treated me that way, kinda fun and entertaining for me." He joined his hands on his back, as Dawood just sat there, ruffling his hair, irritated at the two irritating people in his life meeting so very nicely, unlike their usual selves. "By the way, I'm Kabani."
"Acha. Myself, Hoor!" She extended her hand to shake, as she thought this was how all these big people met. Moreover, this guy was kinda matching her vibe. Fun. Before Kabani could bring his hand forward, Dawood pinched him on his leg, making him fall back on the sofa wincing.
"He gets allergic reactions to hand shakes." He gritted out, annoyed.
Hoor hid both her lips, to stop the smile from spilling on her face. Was Mr. Dawood, by any chance, jealous?
He didn't even answer her proposal yet and he's acting like a jellyfish now? An idea popped in her head as she cleared her throat.
"Kabani. Yahi naam bataya tha na?" She asked politely, very unlike her.
"Tumhari shaadi tou nahi hui hogi na?" Trying to sound as sweet as possible, as asked in a low voice.
Kabani choked still rubbing his leg and shaking his head as a "No". While Dawood's eyes grew as wide as saucers. What the actual flip? Before he could process or say something, Hoor dragged him by his coat's sleeve towards the window.
"Banda bura nahi lagta. Isse shaadi ki offer karungi, tou maan jae ga kiya?" She whispered in a hushed tone, glancing at Kabani, as if gossiping about something.
"Bloody hell! Are you serious right now?" Dawood gave her a look of disapproval, feeling agitated. This girl had just offered him for marriage yesterday and now she's literally ready to ask another guy, without even waiting for his reply?
"Bloody serious! Shaadi aur mera koi mazaq hai bhala? Haan, pehli baar bhaag ai thi mai, lekin ab tou apni marzi se kar rahi hun." Hoor continued playing her card, biting on her lip as she watched his frustrated expressions. Well, if he cared, he should just say 'Yes' to her! Kabani on the other hand felt like a kabab mai haddi or qurbani ka bakra between this couple.
"Hoor, you're talking about marriage right now. How can you think of marrying someone you don't even know and just met and-" His tone was growing louder slowly as she saw him rambling like this for the first time.
"Woah, chill you guys." Kabani finally got up from his seat, motioning both his hands up at them.
"I am, chilling like a chilli." Hoor shrugged, flipping her hair back. Kabani chuckled at her statement, as Dawood clenched his jaw. "Since we're done with the deal. You may leave now." Dawood said as Kabani gave him a knowing look, and winking at him with a thumbs up, and left them both alone.
"Should we get married?" He straightaway came to the point as it was Hoor's turn to get surprised now. Dawood had talked to his dad about the situation, he couldn't take such a huge step without his parents' consent, this wasn't how he was raised too. Since he knew what situation Hoor was in, but the important part was, he confessed to his father that he had grown a liking towards her and he actually wanted to get married to her not only because of that reason. His dad allowed him to get their nikkah done as he would talk to his mom, and they can have their proper wedding later when he comes there with their new daughter-in-law.
"Yeh mai ne kia sahi suna hai?" Hoor acted oblivious to hide her flustered self, while looking around the room, until her gaze fell on his serious unwavering ones.
"Are you really going to marry me?" She asked, her fingers gradually moving up to pull the strands of her hair behind her ears.
"Jee bilkul." He smiled, as her cheeks tinted pink with a glimpse of shyness in her eyes.
//â¦ï¸â¦ï¸â¦ï¸//
They exited the mosque, as she was still in the same white ankle length long frock she had worn to his office, while he was in his white office shirt. The dupatta flew off her head as the wind blew, the weather seemed to be in a happy mood too as the two souls had been tied together in the most beautiful bond, completing each other's deen now.
"Mujhe ammi jaan ko call karni hai." She looked around for a telepthone booth, as she wanted the good news to reach her mother first, so that she'll bless them with her prayers.
"Why don't you use my phone?" He took out his phone from his back pocket, handing it over to her.
"Wo...kabhi use nahi kiya na meine. Tou sharam aa rahi thi maangte hue." She scratched the back of her head, while holding it.
"Apko sharam bhi ati hai?" He joked, chuckling.
"Agar aap mere wo na hote na, tou iss baat pe kuch sun lena tha mujhse." She blurted out, as another wave of realization and fulfilment hit him. She was his wife now. Wife.
His responsibility, the one he has to fulfil no matter what, he was anxious since this had become his duty now, but he was ready to be by her side, forever, no matter what happens.
"Hello Ammi? Ammi mai ne shaadi kar li, aapne-" She paused upon hearing the unexpected voice from the other side.
"Ainda agar kabhi tumne iss number pe call ki, ya galti se bhi wapis murne ka socha, tou mai kuch soche samjhe beghair sab ko khatam kar dunga. Tum na kabhi meri beti thi, na ban saki, aur na hi kabhi hogi." Her dad's voice was dripping with venom as his words felt like a pang straight on her heart. "Shukarguzar raho, ke mai tumhe aur ussko jiske saath tum behayai karti phir rahi ho saans lene ke qabil chor raha hun." And he cut the call without hearing a single word from her side, without letting her talk to her mother, accusing her of something so lowly.
"What's wrong?" He looked at her dropped expressions as she lowered the phone from her ear. "What did your mom say?"
"She...she wasn't on the line. It was....abba." Her voice was shaky due to the impact of his words, as she didn't raise her eyes from the ground, tears brimming at the corner.
"Hoor?" And she finally broke into a river of tears, bawling loudly. He took her to the car, handing the water bottle to her. She kept crying her eyes out the whole ride back home, bothering his uneasy heart. He didn't know what was it that her dad said which made her this sad that she was crying like this, but he was growing stressy by each passing second. She finally stopped bawling and sat in silence which he didn't interrupt. But she broke it herself, stuttering and narrating to him what her dad had said to her.
Upon reaching back home, she ran off to the sofa, throwing off her sandals and hugging her knees by placing her feet on top of it. Then her crying session began again, it was as if she was finally letting all the overflowing emotions kept locked inside her out altogether, today. She sniffed and took heavy breaths, crying like a baby.
Dawood sat on the sofa beside her, not knowing what to do. If he hugs her, how will she react? Should he let her cry on his shoulder as it goes lending a shoulder to cry on? His slightly shaky hand arose to pat her back as she abruptly looked up at him with her red eyes.
"Kia hai? Kabhi kisi larki ko rote hue nahi dekha? Aisa tukur tukur taar rahein hain!" She shouted in her hoarse voice.
"You're not kisi larki, you're my wife now. Aur aapko tou pehli baar dekha hai na aise, and I'm not liking it one bit, but I also don't know what to do or say to make you feel better, so all I can do is watch you?" He answered back feeling so on edge. She kept silent, pouting. She also felt bad now for acting like this. He handed the tissue box to her as she cleaned her face up.
"Well, I might have something that will lift your mood up." He gave her an excited smile, with a mischievous look in his eyes.
"Kia?" She asked, not expecting a gift, but it was D for Dawood, her chosen gem after all. He ran off to his car, and returned quickly, sitting back on the couch, catching his breath.
"Here. Open it." He handed her a wrapped up box. Hoor's eyes went wide in anticipation, as she opened it up, tearing the gift wrapper apart.
It had a file in it, as her brows fell together. She opened it up, and it had her admission form, with her university id, as an official student there. "Haye mere Allah! Mera admission karwa diya aapne?" She exclaimed covering her face.
"Jee. Next month se university jaein gi aap. In sha Allah." He gave her an assuring nod. "There's something else in there too." She picked up the file, as a small box wrapped in a beautiful blue ribbon was placed under it. She opened the box, as a simple yet elegant necklace with a small diamond shaped shiny bead was in it. "Waaah." She was in complete awe.
"May I?" He asked as she gave him a nod, turning around. Tying the necklace on it's owner, he smiled. She peeked down at it, "I love it." She said, still in teary eyes.
"Can this gift get your beautiful and infectious smile which I absolutely love, please?" He gave her a loving look, which she returned with her wide smile, her cheeks burning warm. "Thank you, mauhtarma." He finally felt relieved, looking at her happy face.
She shyly moved out of the bathroom, in his bedroom, after changing. Well, things did kinda changed. Although they had been living together before. She saw him standing by the window, talking on the phone.
"Yes, Dad. I'll be back tomorrow." His words had her pause. Does he mean, he'll go back to England? After he shut the call as she patiently stood behind him, tapping her feet, she attacked him with her questions.
"Aap England wapis jaa rahe hain? Aise achanak?" She asked raising a brow.
"Aap nahi, hum ja rahein hain." He turned towards her, while pushing the inside of his cheek with his tongue.
"Kia?" Her heartbeat arose, as her questioning expressions dropped to bewildered ones.
"Jee janab, aap meri biwi hain, apko akela chor ke kese jaa sakta hun mai?" He bend forward to her eye level, their noses almost touching, as he bopped his head with hers, before making his way to his closet, with his bundle of nerves as Hoor gulped evidently, shushing her crazily beating heart.
