Chapter 14:

To The Moon and BackWords: 7697

The last few days had passed in a breeze. Hashir was as distant as ever but little Hana kept Ameera company. The pair had grown a bond in just about a week.

Hashir, however, didn't even spare Hana a glance. It confused Ameera to no end but she had grown accustomed to his bipolar behavior.

She was surprised when Hashir didn't talk about dropping off Hana at the near orphanage or foster home. He was determined to take Hana to the police station the minute he saw her, but now, it seemed as if he didn't care.

Today was the day of Imaans birthday party. The theme was all unicorns so you had to wear either blue, purple, or pink. Hana was wearing an adorable pink dress that had net on the top part and was shear on the bottom.

Ameera was wearing a similar outfit to Hana. She decided on a a baby pink peplum that had whitish-silver embroidery paired with straight pink pants.

Ameera was nervous of how her family would think of Hana. She hadn't told anyone in her family about her yet and was dreading their reactions.

She packed an extra outfit for Hana and packed her baby bag as well. Hana was cooing and laughing the whole time Ameera dressed her up.

After getting ready herself, she headed downstairs. Hashir was sitting on the living room couch, watching news. He was wearing a pink colored dress shirt along with white pants. Ameera raised her eyebrows in shock, seeing that he was matching with both her and Hana.

Hashir raised his eyes when he heard footsteps coming down the stairs. His wife entered the room, looking gorgeous as ever. He knew he had been the luckiest person ever when they got married.

His eyes then drifted on to the child in her hands and he tensed up. Without saying a word, he got up and headed straight for the door.

The party was in full swing when the couple arrived. Family, family friends, and Imaans school friends, along with a parent that came to accompany them, were all enjoying their time. The birthday party was held in Mahams backyard. There was a bouncy castle, ice cream truck, popcorn maker, and so much more.

Maham immediately came forward to hug her sister. No one, however, had noticed the little car seat next to Ameera.

"I missed you so much, Ameera," Maham whispered in her ear.

"Is that Ameera?! Peeche ho, muhje be milnay do," Gasped Amna Chachi. Ameera let out a laugh at her Chachi's antics before hugging her.

(Move aside, I want to greet her too; paternal uncles wife)

Slowly, all their family friends came to greet Ameera and Hashir. They had missed her, especially after not seeing her for months.

"Ameera? Yeh kon hai?" Asked Ameera's mom.

(Who is this?)

Here it was. The moment she was dreading most.

"Mama...yeh Hana hai," she slowly responded.

(This is Hana)

After seeing the confused face of her loved ones, Ameera responded with, "I'll explain everything later," They all nodded before taking turns and holding Hana.

"Ameera? Meri beti muhjse nahi milay gi?"

(Won't my daughter greet me?)

Ameera turned and leapt into the awaiting arms. Amir Hamdani. Hashirs father and Ameera's father in law. The two had an unbreakable bond. Ameera had always been around Amir since he was also a business partner of Ameera's father. He had become like a second father to her.

She had not known that Hashir was his son until she turned 18. Hashir had always preferred to be alone and wanted to stay home instead going out to gatherings or parties held for them, which was why she didn't know the two were related.

She moved away from Amir, smiling. "Aap khasey hai?" She asked.

(How are you?)

"Really sad," he said. Ameera furrowed her eyebrows and asked why, he responded with, "I haven't seen my favorite person in the whole world,"

"Hey! I'm right here, baba," said Zainab, Amir's daughter and Hashirs younger sister. Ameera laughed before moving forward and greeting Zainab.

Hashir watched the whole scene unfold in front of him. He greeted everyone with a blank face, like he usually had done.

Hashir was talking to Ameera's cousin when Zainab came and forced him to take pictures with Ameera. Ameera was standing near the little photo booth that Maham had set up.

"Ok, smile," Zainab said and the couple obeyed.

"Wait! Let me go get Hana!" She exclaimed excitedly. She immediately started moving towards her father, who had been introducing Hana around. "Baba, let me borrow her real quick," she said. Amir looked at his daughter confused, but before he could say anything, his daughter grabbed Hana and dashed towards Ameera and Hashir.

Ameera held Hana in her hands and posed for the photo.

"Wait, Hashir Bhai, you hold Hana," Zainab said.

(Brother)

Hashir tensed, which didn't go unnoticed by Ameera. "No it's ok Zainab, I'll hold her," Ameera said.

"Nai na, bhai hold her," Zainab insisted.

(No)

"Zainab, I told you alre-," Ameera was cut off by the ever so stubborn Zainab. Zainab once again held Hana and handed her over to Hashir who had been tense the whole time.

Zainab smiled in satisfaction. "Ok, smile," but before she could take a picture of all three of them, Hashir pushed Hana into Ameera's arms before storming back into the house.

After cutting Imaans cake and opening presents, everyone had left expect for family. Everyone had moved to Mahams spacious living room including Hashir.

Ameera was confused about his behavior earlier, but let it go, not wanting to ruin Imaans big day.

Ameera changed Hana into a unicorn onesie and she looked absolutely adorable.

Ameera had explained to her family about Hana's situation and they all didn't care if she wasn't their blood. All expect Shazia chachi.

(Paternal uncles wife)

"Phir be, yeh bachi humara khoon nahi hai," Shazia chachi sneered. Ameera looked up at her and felt a pang in her chest.

(But still, this child isn't our blood)

Amir Hamdani clenched his jaw, his nose flaring in anger. He was about to say something before Hashir cut him off.

"Sahi ka," he started, looking directly at Ameera, sending another pang to her heart. Everyone looked at Hashir in disbelief where as Shazia chachi smirked. "But if I remember correctly, wasn't your mother adopted as well? Unke toh sab ne bhura treat nahi kiya. Unko khulay hato say sab ne apnaya tha," he continued, wiping Shazia chachi's smirk off her face. Shazia blushed bright red and looked away.

(Your right; no one treated her wrong. They all welcomed her with open hands)

Hashir stood up and collected himself. "Ameera, chaalo," he said, grabbed Hana's car seat and walked out the house.

Ameera said her goodbyes to everyone, promising to meet up with them soon. Hashir was already in the car with Hana when she walked out.

The drive home was silent and tense. Hashir had clenched the steering wheel so hard, his knuckles turned white. He was driving at a insanely fast rate.

"Hashir," Ameera softly whispered, "slow down, please,"

And that did the trick. Hashir slowed down but his body was still tense.

Before they knew, they had reached home. Ameera grabbed Hana's car seat and took it inside, her husband following after her. She set Hana down and turned around to ask Hashir what his problem was.

As she turned around, she heard his office door slamming shut, making her flinch. She stared at the door for another minute before sighing.

She looked down at Hana who was peacefully sleeping in the car seat. She smiled at her, before taking her out the car seat and walking up the stairs with only one thought in her head,

What was wrong with Hashir?
