Ayat looked at the framed picture with blank eyes. The woman in front of her looked nothing like her. She looked happy.
It was her wedding photo, taken just before the reception.
She had a huge smile on her face, her eyes shining with happiness. Even Omar looked happy. She sighed before looking back at the dress in her hands.
Since Omar was the heir to a pretty important business, they always attended high end parties. This one in particular was very important. Something about a famous businessman from oversees coming to attend.
She had been thankful for this event. If it hadn't taken place, her body would've been bruised. Omar refrained himself from hitting her because he didn't want anyone to get the wrong impression about what happens behind closed doors.
She started on her makeup, opting for a elegant, simple look. She smiled as she remembered a memory of her and Eshal. Eshal loved to do makeup on others. She would literally drag Ayat, make her sit on a chair and do her makeup to the point where Ayat even knew the basics of it. But after Eshal stopped coming over, Ayat had to learn everything about it herself.
The memory made her feel worse.
She realized that she was truly alone.
She didn't have a family. She didn't have friends. She didn't have anyone.
Ayat sighed before continuing her makeup. She hurriedly applied the makeup, not wanting to anger her husband.
She changed into an elegant colored dark green dress. It was made of velvet and had an off the shoulder, long sleeves. It hung on to each of her curves and reached the floor.
A few years ago, Ayat wouldn't have been comfortable wearing a dress like this, but now, she was used to it.
She curled the ends of her hair and made a hair crown braid.
She looked at herself in the mirror one last time before slipping in her nude pumps as she headed downstairs.
Omar looked up from his phone as he heard the sound of heels. He rolled his eyes at how long his wife took before grabbing her hand and leading her to the limo waiting for the both of them outside.
"You better be on your best behavior tonight." Omar growled out as his wife fearfully nodded. "And remember, no one should get suspicious. Or else, you know what will happen." Ayat nodded once again. He would kill her. Quite literally he would. He wasn't afraid of anything or anyone. Plus, his so called friends would help him out.
They reached the outdoor venue. It was a little chilly out but nothing too serious. Omar wrapped his arm around her waist and walked towards the venue as paparazzi took pictures. Ayat's hand tightened on her clutch, looking down.
Omar immediately started greeting everyone, all while his wife beside him. Everyone had champagne in their hands except for Ayat.
The venue looked absolutely gorgeous. There were tables placed with vases full of flowers on top. There was even a red carpet and a stage at the end, where the speeches would take place.
Ayat excused herself from her husband and the people he was taking to, to head over to the appetizer table. She was starving since she didn't have breakfast. She picked up a mini bowl made of bread that had lettuce, minced beef and cheese on it.
She as she conversed with her husband's business partners wife.
They were all nice and not fake like a lot of other people in the business.
During this time, she forgot what was happening at home and forgot how lonely she was. Her eyes drifted around as she felt a strong gaze on her, but she couldn't figure who it was. While looking around, she spotted her husband, who had a woman falling all over him. By the looked of it, he enjoyed the woman's attention. Ayat looked away in disgust, not even bothered by them.
"I heard the business man coming from abroad is very hot." Sheila, one of the wives said.
"Yah, I heard too. Apparently his ex fiancée was cheating on him." As much as she liked these women, they had a terrible habit of gossiping and back biting.
"Oh my god. That horrible." One of the older ladies said.
"It is. But now a days, cheating on your significant has become so common. It's absolutely disgusting." Sheila once again spoke. Everyone else in the circle nodded as they agreed with her words.
Ayat never really understood the point of a person cheating. When you have your partner to do all these things with, why would you still want to go out to another person and get pleasure from them?! It was morally, ethically and religiously wrong.
Haram police has always so much to say about a woman not wearing a hijab but when it comes to someone cheating, they stay silent.
Cheating can ruin your life in a matter of seconds. If you really want to go out with different people and sleep around with them, then why commit to a relationship?!
Ayat jumped as she felt a hand on her lower back. She turned around to see her husband looking at her with blank eyes. "Sorry ladies, but I'll have to steal my precious wife from you now." Omar said, a dazzling smile on his face.
The ladies cooed at their relationship, going on about how lucky she is to have such a loving husband.
"Loving my ass," a little voice in the back of her head spoke as Ayat internally rolled her eyes.
Why do people judge a relationship from a glimpse that they get of it?
Omar lead Ayat to a table placed near the stage. Everyone else had also settled down in their seats, as lunch was about to be served.
Their entree consisted of a steak, with mashed potatoes and steamed veggies. Ayat ate silently while her husband conversed with his colleagues. She honestly wasn't surprised at how delicious the steak was. It was a rich people gathering and it had to be perfect.
Their dessert consisted of a lava cake topped with a scoop of ice cream and chocolate syrup.
After eating, everyone started giving their speeches. First up was the man who invited them all, Mr. Fareed. He was a polite old man who often reminded Ayat of her father.
She zoned out as his speech went on. She didn't mean to be rude, it was just that it was boring. "I will now like to welcome Mr. Zaryab Khan."
As soon as the words were said, Ayats eyes snapped up towards the stage and her heart beat picked up. Could it be that Zaryab.
No.
It couldn't, right?
She watched as a figure walked on stage and her eyes widened.
It was Zaryab.
Eshal's brother.
Ayat stared at him, dumbfounded. The last time she saw him was when she visited Eshal for the last time. His dark eyes watched her as she left their house with tears in her eyes.
She had never communicated with him. When she was younger, sure but as she grew older, she would avoid him. Which was why Eshal would always be at her house house.
"Thank for having me, Mr. Fareed." His deep voice broke Ayat out of her thoughts. She looked up and her breath hitched.
Those dark eyes were looking right at her.
