Tears Of Betrayal: Chapter 21
Tears Of Betrayal (The Saints Series)
After landing on Damien and Winterâs island thatâs a hell of a lot bigger than Alexeiâs, we step off the plane.
A smile spreads over my brotherâs face as I walk toward him, and then we engulf each other in a tight hug.
âFuck, itâs been too long,â I murmur, glad to see him again.
Pulling back, I hold Damien at armâs length and look him over. âYou look good.â
âLifeâs been good,â Damien replies, still smiling wide.
We turn to where Carson and Alexei are hugging, and then I step forward to embrace Carson, while Alexei does the same with Damien.
When weâve all greeted each other, I hold my hand out to Ariana, where sheâs been standing to the side. She darts forward and quickly links her fingers with mine while giving me a nervous look.
I squeeze her hand and tug her right to my side, then turn back to my brother and Carson. âThis is Ariana Robinson.â
Carsonâs one eyebrow lifts, obviously recognizing her name.
I gesture at Damien. âMy brother, Damien.â
âHi,â Ariana smiles at him, but Damienâs a little caught off guard that Iâm holding her hand, so he just stares at her.
I gesture at Carson. âAlexeiâs younger brother, Carson. Heâs the one that got the contract on you and forwarded it to us.â
This time thereâs a genuine smile on Arianaâs face as she looks at Carson. âThanks for not killing me.â
Carson begins to chuckle. âYouâre welcome.â
Damien places his hand on my shoulder, then gives me a pointed look.
I glance back at Ariana and feel a burst of pride to have her by my side. âSheâs mine.â
Ariana shoots me a disgruntled look, then turns her attention to Damien. âWhat your brother is trying and failing to say is weâre seeing where this goes.â
Damien tries not to laugh but then fails. âNow I understand.â
Meaning he gets why Iâve chosen Ariana after never being in a relationship before.
Flaming red hair catches my eye as Winter walks toward us, carrying my nephew.
I let go of Arianaâs hand, and moving to my sister-in-law, I lean down and kiss both her cheeks before taking my nephew from her. âNikolai, look how youâve grown. Soon youâll be taller than me.â
I hear Damien introducing Winter to Ariana, and knowing my woman is safe, I focus all my attention on Nikolai, who doesnât recognize me because I havenât been around much.
âIâm your fatherâs brother, remember? Dyadya Demitri.â
The little boy thatâs the spitting image of Damien and me gives me a shy smile and mumbles, âHello.â
When Damien joins us, Nikolai instantly holds his arms out to his father, and I hand him over.
âHeâs gotten big,â I mention to Damien. Glancing behind us, I notice how Ariana sticks to Alexeiâs side and gesture for her to come while saying, âWeâre safe here, so I expect you next to me.â
âOh, how am I supposed to know that,â she mutters. âYou canât make up the rules as we go.â
After she takes my hand, we all head inside the house, where weâre greeted by Cillian, whoâs a father figure to Winter.
Alexei heads to the dining room, and we all follow. Once everyone is seated around the large table, Damien asks, âWhy are we going after Yuri?â
I get right to the point. âAriana is Sergeiâs daughter from an affair. Yuri wants her dead so she canât have any claim to the inheritance. Lucian spoke to Sergei on our behalf, and Sergei asked us to keep her safe at all costs. He also changed his last will, so Arianaâs the only heir.â
Carson lifts an eyebrow. âAnd Yuri wonât back down?â
Alexei shakes his head. âHeâs under the impression heâs already head of the Bratva.â
âAnd the other members of the Bratva?â Damien asks. âSeimon, Andrei, and Lev? Who are they standing behind?â
Alexei takes a deep breath and lets it out slowly. âWe wonât know until the meeting where everyone will vote.â
âIf they back Yuri, weâll be going up against four powerful families,â Carson states the obvious.
âAgainst the four of us,â I say.
âFive,â Winter interjects, and then Damienâs wife, whoâs the Blood Princess and head of the largest diamond smuggling empire, gives me a look of warning. âIâm going with.â
My eyes dart to Damien, and he gives me a nod, showing heâs okay with it. Winter was trained by Cillian, and Iâve seen for myself how good she is, so Iâm not worried that she wonât be able to hold her own.
âAre you going to ask Lucian to help?â Carson asks.
I shake my head. âThis is a family affair. Heâs already helped enough.â
âFamily affair?â Ariana asks, her big hazel eyes locked on me.
âYouâre one of us now, and we look after our own,â Alexei says.
I see how Alexeiâs statement hits her. Arianaâs eyes dart over the table, and then she swallows hard and lowers her gaze. Placing my hand on her thigh, I give her a squeeze, then I turn my attention back to the matter at hand.
âWeâll leave for Russia tomorrow.â
âHowâs this going to play out?â Damien asks. âAre we attacking first or waiting for them to come to us?â
Alexei shakes his head. âWeâll attend the Bratva meeting and take it from there. If thereâs going to be a show of power, I want it to happen at the meeting.â
âWhy?â Carson asks, his eyes locked on his brother.
âBecause theyâll either kneel to me as the new head of the Bratva or die,â Alexei says, his tone unyielding.
Iâm glad to hear Alexeiâs made a decision.
Alexei gestures at Ariana and me. âDemitri will take over Sergeiâs business, and as always, heâll be my right hand.â
Damienâs eyes snap to me. âYouâre getting married?â
Ariana makes a choking sound, and then she begins to laugh nervously. âNo.No.No. Weâve only known each other two weeks.â
Damien shrugs. âSo?â
His marriage to Winter was arranged two weeks after they met, so my brother probably expects the same of Ariana and me.
âAriana was raised differently than us,â I explain.
âLike Hailey?â Carson asks. His girlfriend isnât from our world, as well.
âYes.â
âSo, are you just going to manage the business for Ariana?â Damien asks.
âFor the time being.â
The corner of his mouth lifts when he reads between the lines.
Ariana will marry me.
ARIANA
When we got here, I had to suppress the urge to run back to the plane and hide. Iâm still getting used to Alexei, and meeting Damien and Carson, who look just like their brothers, was intimidating as hell.
And then thereâs Winter. Now thatâs one woman I wonât be looking for trouble with. She moves like a jungle cat, her demeanor matching that of her husbandâs.
Well, girl, youâre in the thick of it now.
As soon as the meeting was over, I sneaked out of the house. Demitri will probably scold me for leaving his side, but he said weâre safe here.
I walk toward a lining of trees, just needing a little time away from everyone. Iâm used to being alone, and I havenât had much of that since Alexei came to get us from the island.
My thoughts turn to what Alexei said, that Iâm a part of their family now.
Am I really?
Theyâre all cut-throat killers⦠and then thereâs me.
I hear leaves crunching behind me, and glancing over my shoulder, I see Winter coming toward me.
âHey, I hope you donât mind me exploring?â
âNot at all.â She falls into step next to me and gestures to her right. âCome this way. It leads to the shore.â
I walk with her, and Iâm surprised when she doesnât say anything. Reaching the shore, we sit down, and then a smile tugs at my mouth as we stare at the Finnish town in the distance.
After a while, Winter turns her gaze to me, and Iâm surprised when she gives me a comforting smile. âItâs a lot to deal with, right?â
I nod and suck in a deep breath. âHonestly, I donât know if Iâm coming or going.â
âIâve been there. You might not see it now, but youâre in good hands. The men will take care of everything.â
âTheyâve already done so much for me,â I admit. âEven though Demitri kidnapped me and scared the living hell out of me, I know I can trust him.â
Winter lets out a chuckle. âHe kidnapped you?â A smile filled with curiosity forms around her mouth. âThis I have to hear.â
She doesnât look as threatening anymore, and I relax next to her. Needing to talk to someone, I relay everything thatâs happened, leaving out the part where I slept with Demitri.
âTalk about being overwhelmed.â Lifting her hand, she pats my back, and then she tells me how she met Damien.
Iâm so engrossed in the story that everything around us fades away.
âWhen did you know you loved him?â I ask.
Winter thinks back to the past, then murmurs, âThe Vetrovs are the best, and theyâre not afraid of anything, but the moment Damien looked at me and I saw the fear of losing me in his eyes, I knew.â
âBut you married him before you loved him, right?â I ask, enjoying getting to know Winter.
She nods. âAlexei arranged our marriage as an alliance.â
âHow did you feel about it?â
Winter shrugs. âI always knew Iâd marry to form an alliance. I was lucky with Damien because I was already attracted to him.â
A smile pulls at my lips. âYou never regretted it?â
She shakes her head. âDamien was the last gift my father gave me, and I love him with everything I am. Heâs my rock.â
Curious about Winter, I ask, âWhy did you say youâre coming with us to Russia? You donât know me.â
Her eyes lock on mine. âIâll always have my husbandâs back, and I owe Alexei and Demitri. They helped me eliminate my enemies.â
âSoâ¦â I wet my lips, âAre you like them?â
âWhat do you mean?â
âDangerous?â I explain myself better.
Winter climbs to her feet and holds out her hand to me. After she helps me up, she says, âI think itâs time for a quick training session. Iâm a firm believer that a woman should be able to protect herself.â
I really like the sound of that and feel a burst of excitement. âReally? Youâll show me a couple of things?â
âHow much sleep do you need?â she asks, a serious expression falling over her face.
âFour hours or Iâm a zombie.â
She glances at my outfit. âFirst, we need to get you the right clothes. Come.â
I follow Winter back to the house and to a bedroom where she gives me a similar outfit to the one sheâs wearing. Black cargo pants and a black shirt thatâs super tight-fitting. It turns out weâre the same size, and I grin as I look at my reflection. Now I really feel badass.
âBoots,â she says as she drops them next to me. âI suggest you get a couple of these outfits when you have the chance to shop. Itâs best for fighting.â
âOkay,â I nod as I sit down and pull on the boots.
When I stand up, Winter gives me a look of approval, and then she leads me to a barn beside the house. Itâs set up as a gym, and thereâs even a shooting range.
Winter leads me to the shooting range then takes a gun from behind her back that I didnât even notice.
Am I getting used to seeing weapons already?
She takes off the safety then takes a stance, saying, âYouâre going to spread your legs a little and lock your elbows in so your arms take the recoil of the gun.â
I mimic her, and then she moves in next to me, handing me the weapon. The metal feels foreign and dangerous against my palm, and my heart begins to beat faster.
âTake aim,â she instructs.
I do as she says and make sure to lock in my elbows.
âWhen youâre ready, pull the trigger.â
This will be the first time Iâm firing a weapon, and thereâs a weird exhilaration pulsing through my veins.
I take a deep breath, and when I exhale, I squeeze the trigger. The bang isnât as loud as I expected, and the weapon jerks in my hands, but I have no idea where the bullet went.
I grin at Winter. âThatâs so cool.â
