Chapter 16
Behind The Alpha Book 7 Graham
(Chapter Song âPopular Monsterâ by Falling In Reverse)
GRAHAM I spin around to a gun in my face, throwing my hands up. âI-I uhâ¦â
He narrows his eyes. âYouâre the professor. You tried to sabotage us.â
I shake my head as I back up. âNoâ¦No, Iâ¦it wasâ¦an accidentâ¦I would neverâ¦â I chuckle as I look around for a way out.
âYeah. Yeah, you did! You killed my best friend, fuck head! He had a kid!â He aims the gun on my brain.
âWHOA! Hey! Iâm sorry for your friend. I swear. I have no idea what youâre talkingâ¦â My back hits a truck and he puts the barrel to my brain.
âBullshit. Good bye.â
I close my eyes tight and wait for my end. I hear an oof and open one eye. Confusion fills me and I open the other one. The soldierâs on the ground and Destiny is standing at his side, inspecting his nails.
He puts his hands in his pockets and smiles at me. âHey, Graham. Howâs it going?â He asks like heâs at a fucking tea party.
I push off the truck and walk to the other side of the unconscious soldier. âHowâs it going? Iâm fucking cracked! Thatâs how itâs going. Iâm literally in a fucking nightmare!â I motion to the army behind me.
âItâs not a nightmare. Well, I mean it is, but not like a dream.â He says.
âWait. Thisâ¦isnât in my head?â I turn my head slightly and eye him.
âNo.â He chuckles. âYou donât have that great an imagination.â He steps over the soldier, wraps an arm around my shoulder and guides me to the army. âNo. Youâ¦â He plants a finger on my chest. âAre a bookmark.â
âA what?!â I scrunch my face at him.
âA bookmark. Come on, youâre a teacher. You should know what a bookmark is for.â He tilts his head to me.
I look at the ground then back up at him. âIâm a place holder?â
âYes.â He grins as he thumps a finger in my chest.
I look at nothing as I try to process. I shove his arm off me. âA place holder for what?â
He lifts his chin and smirks. âNot whatâ¦â He leans to me. âWho.â His brows raise as he looks me in the eye.
My mouth shrinks and my brows stitch up. âWhat did you do?â
He shrugs and ticks his lips down. âNothing. Just put Humpty Dumpty back together with someâ¦minor adjustments.â
âWHAT THE FUCK?!â I throw my hands up.
He rushes me, grabs my nape and looks behind me. He points in my face and stares into my eyes. âUnless you want to die really painfully and kill me in the process, youâll keep your voice down.â
âNo! Fuck you! What the hell is going on?!â I yell.
He lowers his head, groans and shakes his head. He lifts his hand and snaps his fingers.
Iâm standing in a pale blue room with stark white walls, ceiling and floors. Iâm dressed in white as I spin around the room with no door.
âHELLO?!â My voice echoes around the empty room.
âYou just donât know when to shut up.â Destinyâs voice booms so loud I have to cover my ears. I double over and when itâs over, I raise my head. Heâs standing in a t-shirt and jeans.
I look at him with cautious confusion. âWhere am I?â
He ticks his head. âA pocket. A quiet place between worlds.â
âA pocket.â I say as my bare feet slowly cross the floor to him.
âYeah. Thereâs a lot of them between the walls. Some more special than others. This one is like my meeting room to gab and throw back a beer or two. Speaking of which, you want one?â He points to me as he raises his other hand to snap.
âNo, thanks.â I tuck my hands under my armpits as I tilt my head. âWhatâs happening to me?â
âWhat happened to you was something that wasnât really in the plan. I just kind of made a marginal note and went with it.â He says as he stuff his hands in his pockets.
âWhat do you mean?â I ask.
âWell, to put it bluntly, you were a much needed distraction.â He smiles.
âDistraction.â
He nods. âSee. I couldnât have Zan or anyone discover my plan to kill dear old dad and take his job so, I wrote you in as an amendment and boom. Graham walks again.â
âWhy do I feel like that was a horrible idea?â I raise my chin and eye him.
He scratches his nose and sniffs. âWell, umâ¦â He coughs like heâs uncomfortable and not wanting to tell me. âI may not have thought it completely through.â
I walk up to him and narrow my eyes. âWhat did you do?â
He shifts in the spot.
âDestiny!â My voice booms as my wolf growls in my chest.
He twists his lips. âItâs not a big deal, ok. Itâs justâ¦You were part of the universe for a long time.â He looks around the room. âYou know what? Letâs go somewhere else.â
He snaps his fingers and we're in a forest. Itâs night, but itâs not blue.
Heâs leaning on a tree with a smug look on his face that I wish I wipe off with a good solid punch.
I throw my arms up. âWhat did you do, you son of a bitch?!â I growl as I throw a finger in his face.
Hey scowls as he pushes off the tree. âDonât get nasty. I gave you your life back.â He leans to me, pointing at his chest.
âYOU CALL THIS FUCKING LIFE? LOOK AT ME! IâM FUCKING DESTROYED!â I yell in his face.
He crosses his arms. âPutting a human and wolf back together, atom by atom, is a delicate procedure and I didnât have a lot of time.â
I jut my chin out. âTell me.â I growl.
âIt canât be done by just any cosmic. It requires patience and care and a lot of alcoholâ¦â
âTELL ME!â I flare my eyes at him.
He holds a hand up to me. âOkâ¦Maybe, I couldnât find all the pieces when I was putting you together.â
I get right up in his face. âWhat the hell did you do, Destiny?!â
He holds up a finger. âUhâ¦Itâs Eternity now. Get it right.â He pokes my shoulder and pushes me back. âI may have had to improvise.â
I glare into eyes . âWhat the fuck did you?!â I grit as I grab his shirt in both fists and get nose to nose with him.
âHey, just calm down, alright!â He scowls.
I look around at the trees. I turn to Destiny and look at my hands. Ripping them off, I step back and stare at him with confusion. âWhat are you doing here?â
He huffs as he straightens his shirt. âAbout time. I canât stall for you forever.â
I walk up to him. âWhat did you tell him?â
âNothing. Back off.â He shoves me back. âYou know heâs breached the veil right?â
I rub my neck. âYeah. I saw.â
âSo whatever you plan on doing, move your ass because if he calls again, I may have to spill.â Destiny tilts his head as he eyes me.
I drop my arm to the side. âI just need more time.â
He nods. âI canât keep this up, man. The more Iâm exposed, the more Rex can tap me. The longer you keep Graham in the dark, the less time they have to prepare for the invasion.â
âI knowâ¦I justâ¦â I sigh. âI canât find him. I canât break the connection without the Tanuki. Itâs the only way. Once I put him together with the Kitsune, it should sever the connection between me and him and he can go on with his boring life.â
âOrâ¦he could explode into a bazillion little pieces.â Destiny crosses his arms and scowls. âThen all my hard work. My cosmic blood, sweat and laughter would be for nothing!â
I point in his face. âYou got your job title. I didnât fucking sign up for this!â I grind at him.
He looks me in the eye. âYou canât tell me going over there isnât better than your side.â
I look down and turn away. âNo. I canât say that, but I canât keep jumping like this.â I flop my hand to him as I turn. âIâm losing my mind, man. Itâs justâ¦â I look to the world I want to be a part of. âThe more I see, the more I want and itâs not good. I may have seen the other side, but I know I donât belong there and Iâm not a total asshole like the other guys. I know what this is doing to him. Itâs not fair, man. Destiny. We're torturing him.â
He slowly walks up to me. âThen be a big boy and tellâ¦him.â
I lower my eyes and think. âHe wonât handle it. I could barely handle it when you told me and Iâm ten times stronger than him. Iâm just protecting him, ok. No. If I sever the connection, heâll think heâs cured.â
âOr dead.â Destiny says again.
âQuit saying that! He wonât die. The plan will work if I can find the Tanuki.â I say.
âLook. I didnât spend forever, painstakingly putting Graham back together, for you to wreck everything. Now, if you insist on this bullshit plan, I may have to take out some insurance that it better work.â He glares into my eyes.
âWhat kind of insurance?â I narrow my eyes.
He thumps a finger into my chest. âIf he explodes, you explode.â He threatens as he ticks his jaw.
âYou canât do that.â I grit.
âYeah. I can. A little instruction on the right molecule and boom.â He flares out his fingers.
âYouâre an asshole.â I clench.
âAnd youâre on borrowed time. If they connect the Lefus, your time is up. If I was you, Iâd be working with Graham instead of trying to get away from him and do the part youâre destined for.â He motions his hand to me.
âNo. Your plan is bullshit. I wonât do it.â I cross my arms in defiance.
âFine, but let me remind you of one tiny, little detail. If Rex gets me, WE'RE ALL FUCKING DEAD!â His scream blew my hair back and I had to shield my eyes as he blinked out.
I hear soldiers barking orders as I lower my arms.
The world is deep blue and the army is ahead of me.
âFucking cosmic dick!â I growl under my breath and break into a sprint out of there before I get caught.
I have to get back to base and find that dog before this whole thing blows up in my faceâ¦literally.
