Chapter 4 I walked in. âWhat are you doing here?
My mother in law and Sarah jumped âIâm here to collect my sonâs belongings.â
âWhatâs it to you?â my mother in law snapper âYou being here is fine, but she being here is a problem,â I said, glaring at Sarah.
âSarahâs here to help me sort through my sonâs things,â my mother in law said.
Looking at the mess theyâd made, I was furious.
âYou call this sorting through his things? It looks like a tornado hit the place. Get out of my house, both of you!â
âEmily, this house is half my sonâs. Iâm not giving you a single penny of his estate,â my motherâinâlaw said defiantly.
âYou donât get to decide that. Legally, Iâm the first heir,â I said coldly.
Sarah stepped forward, smugly patting her round belly.
âEmily, Iâm pregnant with Davidâs child. This baby is the rightful heir.â
âEmily, you didnât expect this, did you? My son left a legacy,â my motherâinâlaw said proudly.
I laughed.
âLetâs go to the lawyerâs office right now. Iâll renounce all claims to Davidâs estate. Itâs all yours.â
They clearly didnât know about Davidâs massive debts, or they thought they could inherit the assets without the liabilities.
At the lawyerâs office, they signed the inheritance papers, grinning from ear to ear.

Chapter 4 As we left, my motherâinâlaw pulled me aside and whispered, âEmily, have you seen a lottery ticket? David bought it for me, and itâs worth over $500,000. If you give it back, Iâll give you $100,000.â
âI havenât seen any lottery ticket.â
â$200,000, then.â
âI really havenât seen it.â I smirked inwardly.
To my motherâinâlaw, Davidâs life meant nothingâmoney was all that mattered.
She looked skeptical but then said, âIâll sell this house and give you half the proceeds.â
I agreed.
But the truth was, David had already maxed out our home equity loan.
It couldnât be sold.
The next morning, I was sound asleep when my motherâinâlaw and Sarah started pounding on my door.
âEmily, you bitch, open up!â
âYou screwed us over, you heartless witch!â
I groggily opened the door, only for my motherâinâlaw to try slapping me.
I grabbed her wrist and shoved her to the ground.
âDonât you dare lay a hand on me.â
For years, sheâd bullied me when David was around, knowing heâd always intervene.
But now that he was gone, she realized I wasnât about to take her crap.
Sitting on the floor, she wailed, âEmily, how could you be so cruel?â
âI finally understand why you gave up Davidâs estate so willingly.â
âYou knew about the debtsâover a million dollars! Weâll never be able to pay it off!â
Chapter 4 âEmily, you need to come with us to the lawyerâs office.â
âWeâre changing the inheritance back to you,â Sarah added, desperation in her voice.
âWhy would I jump back into the fire after finally getting rid of that debt?â
I replied with a smirk.
âYouâre evil,â Sarah spat.
âIâm evil? Youâre the one who had an affair with a married man, thinking youâd hit the jackpot with David.â
âNow your dreams are shattered. Maybe you should consider getting an abortion.â
âSarah, donât you dare abort that baby! Itâs the last of our family line!â my motherâinâlaw cried.
ay the face Sarah looked miserable, tears streaming down her face.
âEmily, you tricked us into inheriting the debt. Weâre suing you.â
âSince these debts were incurred during your marriage, youâre responsible for them,â my motherâinâlaw declared, a new plan forming in her mind.
âThatâs right. Weâll only inherit Davidâs assets, not his debts.â
âThe debts are yours. Weâre going to the lawyer right now,â Sarah insisted, not backing down.
âGo ahead. Iâll be waiting.â
Three days later, I received a lawyerâs letter.
The following day, I brought my lawyer to their office.
After their lawyer explained their side, my lawyer replied, âMy client had no involvement in Davidâs business dealings.â
âAll debts were incurred in Davidâs name or through his company.â
âTherefore, the debts should be taken on by the heirs of Davidâs estate.â

Chapter 4 âWhile itâs true that inheriting assets also means inheriting debts, unless my client can prove she didnât benefit from the borrowed funds, the debts remain tied to the estate.â
Iâd already prepared a thick stack of evidence.
âHere are Davidâs financial records.â
âA small portion went to his business, but the majority went to my motherâinâlaw and Sarah.â
âEmily, you lying bitch! My sonâs money was all spent on you!â my motherâinâlaw shouted.
âThatâs right.â
âDavid always told me you were a spendthrift. He borrowed money to fund your lavish lifestyle,â Sarah said smugly, thinking that since David was dead, there was no way to prove otherwise.
Their lawyer sifted through the evidence, his face growing darker with every page.
The records showed years of transfers from David to Sarah, including payments for vacations, luxury items, and even a $50,000 car.
There were also dozens of payments to my motherâinâlaw, including a $100,000 payment to cover her gambling debts.
The total amount matched Davidâs debts.
Iâd found all this on Davidâs phone, a device Iâd never bothered to check before.
âThis is all fake! Lawyer, donât believe her!â my motherâinâlaw stammered, panic setting in.
âYes, itâs fabricated. I never spent that much of Davidâs money,â Sarah added, her face flushed red with embarrassment.
The lawyer glared at them.
âAre you sure itâs fake?â
âIf it turns out to be true, you could be charged with perjury.â
Both my motherâinâlaw and Sarah immediately fell silent.
#17 Chapter 4 âWeâre dropping this case.â
âYou two can leave,â the lawyer said, dismissing them.
