"No, I am just curious that's all, I think you two would make a cute couple. Have you thought about that as a possibility?" Trying to get him to open up to the idea in case he hadn't thought about it before. You know guys they can be pretty dense when it comes to the obvious!
"I don't know, she is not usually the type of girl I date." I can see the wheels turning in his head as he was contemplating the idea.
"Exactly, let's be honest your type is not working out for you as of lately! Besides you two have so much fun hanging out with each other. You would think that would make her your type of girl to date." As I was making my case for him to date Janet.
"I'll think about it and get back to you on this. I really have to go, or I am going to be late picking up Tom!" Jay responded a little irritated with me. Not sure if it was because I mentioned Janet. Or because he needed to go back to the school and pick up Tom after detention.
"I can take the hint! Ok, talk to you later then, call me!" I got out of the car and playfully slammed the door shut. Making a goofy face at Jay through the window, before turning around to go inside the apartment building.
Promptly after walking through the building doors, I kicked off my number one and number two worst enemies, my dreaded high heel shoes. There was no way I was going to walk up three flights of stairs to my apartment wearing them.
All I could hear was Rage Against the Machine blaring through Jenni's apartment door. An interesting fact to know about Jenni, she used to hate me in 8th grade. I was mortified when my mom told me we were going to move into this apartment building. When I found out she lived here. I made a huge stink to my mother about moving in, but she didn't care. She even made me go downstairs to Jenni's apartment and borrow a butter knife from her the day we moved in. Yeah, talk about embarrassing! Jenni looked at me that day like, how poor you must be not to own a butter knife. Mom knew what she was doing because after that, we became best of friends.
Peering up at the last flight of stairs I contemplated crawling up them on my hands and knees. My feet have had enough today. Thank God I didn't, because as I stood in front of my apartment door about to turn the key to head inside, I heard someone walking up the stairs. So just before I walked through the door, I turned around to see who was there.
"What are you doing here?" I was dumbfounded I wasn't expecting this person to just show up at my front door unannounced!
"You miss me?" Calvin said being his pretentious self, flashing me that alluring smile of his.
"Who missed who?" I walked up to Calvin poking him in the chest between words. Raising my left eyebrow quizzically. while mocking him playfully. Biting my bottom lip trying so hard to not fall under the spell of those baby blues. I hold myself back from kissing his stupid face.
"You know, you're too cute when you try so hard to resist my magnetism!" Calvin flirtatiously tapped my nose. Bending his head down he softly brushed his lips on mine teasingly.
Before I could turn around, I heard the creaking sound of the door opening behind me. My prayers have been answered. We are not alone yayyy! Spinning around I see my mom peeking her head out from behind the door.
"Hannah, who is your friend? Come inside and you can introduce me." Motioning us into the apartment. Glancing at Calvin as he walked through the door behind me.
This is the first time my mom met Calvin. I have been hiding him from her. I was hoping she would never have to find out her daughter was being shady. She already found out I was ringing up her phone bill. Having late night talks to Jared down south. Could I get away with introducing him as a new friend? She knows I have many guy friends that I hang out with.
"Mom this is my friend Calvin. He just moved here from the west coast. Jay introduced us at school." Keeping an arm's length or more distance between Calvin and I. Like I do with my other male friends. Hopefully mom won't see through my illusion.
Standing in my living room, you can feel the awkward energy. Lingering over Calvin and I trying to give us away.
"Hi Calvin, are you thirsty?" Mom walked into the kitchen. Which is directly across the threshold of the living room. With a wide-open concept, the couch where Calvin and I were sitting was visible to her.
"No thank you Mrs. Picozzi, I'm good." I started to laugh as Calvin called my mom Mrs. Picozzi. He just assumed me, and my mother had the same last name.
"Call me Darla! I haven't been Mrs. Picozzi for a long time now." Mom laughed. Most of my friends that knew and love her just called her mom. She was never into that whole addressing her as Mrs. thing. Considering nearly everyone that meets her thinks she is my sister at first sight.
"Oh, sorry Darla!" Embarrassed that he had called my mom the wrong name. Calvin turned a new shade of red all over his face.
"Don't even fret about it, hon!" Mom sweetly gave Calvin a big smile, passing him one of my stepdad's famous chocolate chip cookies.
Everyone was silent while munching on cookies. My stepdad makes the softest most delicious cookies. His secret is to only bake them to a light golden color. Then he takes the pan out of the oven. Letting them finish baking on top of the stove, using only the heat of the pan.
The awkwardness had dropped down to a level five from ten. I think the treat helped break the ice. Until the sound of ringing came from the phone. My heart jumped knowing this was usually the time Jared would call me after school. We usually talked about what happened in our lives that day. Except lately we have been playing phone tag. So, it can't be him, right? Quickly my brain goes into overdrive making up all these horrible scenarios that could play out.
Mom walks over to the tan rotary phone and picks up the receiver to answer it. Looking over at me, she extends her arm and passes me the phone.
"It's for you, of course!" Rolling her eyes teasingly.
Grabbing the phone from her hand, I feel my heart pounding in my chest. Pull yourself together girl, you can do this. Holding my hand over the mouthpiece of the phone. I take a deep breath to gather my composure before saying hello.
"What's up?" Acting all cool and casual I answer the phone.
"Hey girl, how you make out today with those shoes of yours?" Shocked to hear Nina's voice.
"Oh, hey girl! Let's say I won't be wearing those shoes anytime soon. What you up to?" Trying to sound casual, while Calvin is sitting not even a foot away from me. I have yet to figure out if Nina has good intentions or not. Is she after my boy or does she really want to help me teach him a lesson.
"Nothing sitting at home waiting! For that butt head, Calvin, to call me!" Nina makes me laugh. I can really see us being good friends. We could have a lot of fun together.
"Yeah, I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for him to call! He can be kind of flakey." Knowing for certain, she wasn't going to hear from him anytime soon. Calvin is too busy over here devouring all my chocolate chip cookies.
"So what grade are you in, Calvin?" Mom started a conversation with him. While I am on the phone with his alleged, side chick. I only hope Nina can't hear them talking in the background.
"I'm a Junior! These cookies are dope Darla!" Calvin shoving another one of my cookies into his big cookie monster mouth.
"Is Calvin at your house, did I just hear your mom in the background say Calvin? I know I heard his voice. Answer me, tell me the truth!" Nina doesn't sound happy with me. Even though she knows he's the one that has been lying to both of us.
"Yeah, you're right! Although I had no clue, I was going to find it here when I got home. I was shocked myself." Telling Nina, the truth seemed like the right thing to do. Especially if I wanted to develop a friendship with her later on.
"At least I can trust you! Right? I can, trust you? We need to talk, when you know who is not around! I need to know if we are still on the same page." Nina sounded apprehensive as she spoke to me. Like I was the suspicious one.
"Yeah of course! I have to let you go; it's time to change over my laundry now. We can talk more later. Bye!" I quickly hung up on Nina after she said bye on the other end of the phone.
"Speaking of laundry! I have to swap my laundry into the dryer and start another load of washing. Why did you lie to that nice girl?" Mom asked. Grabbing her laundry basket full of dirty clothes. About to head out the door to go down to the basement.
"I Didn't want to be rude to the company. That's all!" I shrugged my shoulders; she just gave me a look as she shut the door behind her.
Calvin inched his way closer to me on the couch. Leaning over to grab the tv remote off the coffee table. He switched it on to the MTV channel. You would have thought he lived here, the way he's been behaving.
"So, you didn't tell me your mom was going to be home!" Taking his hat off and placing it on the coffee table.
"Excuse me! I thought you were babysitting! Lying, much!" Beyond frustrated with this boy. The tone of my voice came off as sarcastic and unfriendly. It's not just for his lying ass, but for eating all my cookies!
"Yeah, I know. My bad, I just had to get that Nina girl off my back. She has been getting clingy since we started that project together for school. I'm starting to think she has a crush or something on me!" Tugging on the front of his shirt as he spoke. Looking all conceited as if he were god's gift to women or something.
"Did you give her a reason too? Could you have possibly been flirting with her?" Trying to collect as many pieces as I could. To put this new triangle puzzle together that he has put us in. I am extremely curious about his side of this story and how this all happened in his head.
"Well, I am a friendly person! Come to think of it, I did ask her to come over to Tom's house to hang out and watch us skate." I knew Hannah was starting to catch on to this whole Nina thing. It's obvious from the questions she's asking me. I have been wondering why she hasn't gotten mad at me for last night. Especially since I slipped out the front door without even saying hi. Because I didn't want to face her and Nina together. Like this afternoon! Talk about an uncomfortable situation. I could sense their jealousy, and I didn't know how to react.
The voice in my head tells me to distract her with a kiss before her mother comes back. Remind her you're all about her right now in this very moment. Wow, it took me this long to connect the dots! Nina is the reason for Hannah's whole new personality that she presented to me today. Right now, this girl sitting here is giving me shit. Bantering back and forth with me is my true girlfriend.
"For your information, when you flirt with a girl and ask them to come hang out with you! They think you like them and want to get to know them better!" Squinting her eyes as she stared into mine. She wasn't having any of my bullshit.
"Oh yeah, does it mean I like someone if I do this?" Jumping across the couch to tickle her sides, to distract her! Her giggles are so infectious! Brushing the hair from her face, I gently plant the most sensual kiss on her plump kissable lips.
"Most definitely! I better not catch you doing this with Nina or any other chick for that matter, Mr. Filmore!" I grabbed him by the waist to pull him closer. This time I teased him, with a passionate kiss. As I pulled away, I bit his bottom lip ever so gently.
Unfortunately, during our whole make out session on the couch, I hadn't noticed or even heard my mom walk through the door. I have been caught red handed in a lie! My poor mom caught her freshman daughter being mounted by a high school junior. In the middle of us playing tonsil hockey on her couch. The boy she was told was just a friend.
Ashamed of myself I pushed Calvin off me. He lands on the living room floor stunned. Here we go, I can see the fury, as well as the disappointment in my mother's eyes. She is about to rip me a new one! Question is, will she hand me my ass in front of my friend? Or wait till he leaves then grill me about my actions?
