Nobody expected Ramona, with her seemingly kind and gentle eyes, to come at Bryant with such a sharp retort. It took all I had to suppress my laughter. But then again, I seemed to be the only one who could find humor in the situation.
The air was thick with awkwardness. What made things awkward wasnât Ramonaâs statement. It was that I, his ex-wife, happened to be right there.
I lowered my head, pretending to be engrossed in the view outside the window, trying to make myself inconspicuous.
The snow outside, not yet melted, was blinding.
I felt a gaze fixed on me and then heard Bryantâs calm voice, âYes, freshly divorced.â
Ramona glanced at Dorothy, her tone cooling, âI heard you played a part in this?â
âGrandma...â Dorothy frowned, shooting me a veiled glare before gracefully sitting beside Ramona, gently shaking her arm. âWhoâs been filling your head with nonsense? Bryantâs marriage was over long before. Itâs just that...â
âIâll ask you just one thing.â Ramona eyed Dorothy coldly, âThe day you announced your engagement, was their divorce final?â
Of course, it wasnât. Dorothy knew that better than anyone.
She was secretly grinding her teeth, but her face was playing it cool, all innocent-like. âThey hadnât finalized their divorce then, true, but if Bryant was willing to divorce for me, doesnât it mean he loves me more than...â
âEnough!â Ramonaâs voice thundered, a flush of anger crossing her face, âWho raised you to be so shameless? If you dare repeat that outside, youâre no longer a Myers!â
Dorothy was stunned. Then, her gaze landed on me angrily. âJane, did you say something to Grandma? Making her think even her granddaughter...â
Ramona frowned. âWhat does this have to do with Jane? Donât direct your misplaced anger at my esteemed guest.â
âEsteemed guest?â Spoiled by Susan, Dorothy couldnât hold back her temper even before Ramona. âWhat kind of guest is she? Donât you know her ex...â She stopped herself mid-sentence.
It dawned on her that I hadnât said anything to Ramona.
Ramona probably just knew about Dorothyâs engagement with Bryant and had looked into it. But she hadnât delved into my past with Bryant, so she didnât know about our relationship.

âI...â Dorothy swallowed her words, muttering, âAnyway, you always take Gregoryâs side over mine!â
Bryantâs eyelashes fluttered, hiding whatever emotion he felt before looking up and speaking slowly, âRamona, donât be mad at Dorothy. I hadnât acted appropriately.â
I suddenly glared at him, thinking it was a sweet scene. If only I werenât here, it would be even more so.
Ramonaâs anger ebbed slightly. âAt least youâre taking some responsibility.â
Then, her tone shifted dramatically, âBut even at your best, youâre still not good enough to be the Myers familyâs son-in-law!â
Unapologetically blunt.
After all, no one dared to cross Bryant in RiverCity. But here was Vista Town, dominated by the three great families. The vast Ferguson family, solely reliant on Bryant, had no support there.
